Brandon Weeden hopes he gets another shot in Cleveland

Brandon Weeden could point to injury as the reason why Brian Hoyer was starting ahead of him a few weeks ago, but there’s no such excuse at the ready this time around.

Jason Campbell will start at quarterback for the Browns this Sunday because the team no longer wants to send Weeden out there with the first-team offense. Halfway through his second NFL season, Weeden is a backup and there doesn’t appear to be much of a future for him with a new regime in Cleveland that didn’t select him in the first round and has shown no affinity for his abilities.

Despite that, Weeden said Friday that he wants to remain in Cleveland with a team he believes “is on the rise.” Weeden knows that’s out of his control, but hopes that he hasn’t had his last hurrah in a Browns uniform.

“I hope I get another shot,” Weeden said Friday, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “I hope [it’s here]. I’m champing at the bit. You never know. This league is crazy. Whether it’s this Sunday, four Sundays down the road or at the end of December, I’ll be ready.”

Weeden said he still had confidence in his ability to be an NFL quarterback and took full responsibility for the poor play that led him to the bench. The accountability is nice but that poor play makes it hard to imagine that there’s going to be much of a trade market for a player who seems destined for the scrap heap when the season comes to an end, but perhaps there’s a team that wants to jump the line for a shot at Weeden now so they can hold onto him into the future.

And every Cleveland Browns fan hopes he doesn’t. Like in the movie ‘Life’, “He just can’t get right, boss.” The guy just doesn’t get it. Can’t make a quick decision, holds the ball too long, stares down receivers, has no idea what a progression is, doesn’t have any pocket presence, waits for receivers to get open vs throwing them open, takes far too many sacks.

With all of those negatives not even a strong arm is enough. If your O-Line is bad, then get rid of the ball faster, but he can’t do that. Even when the line blocks well the holds the ball and got an intentional grounding call plus yet another stupid flip pass.

Thank you, Mike Holmgren for nothing. Should have drafted an offensive lineman in the first round last year.

People in hell hop for ice water and still don’t get it. Take your undeserved salary and fade away old man.

Yeah and I hope to bang a bunch of super models.

Yeah Weeds, I hope I win the lottery tonight, trade in the wife for two 20 year olds, etc. You had plenty of opportunities to prove you are ready to be an NFL starter, and right now it isn’t in the cards. Be happy being a clipboard carrying 2nd stringer, it’s still way better than working a 9-5 making under $100,000 a year like the rest of us stiffs. Thanks for the memories though!

Weeden has waisted his opportunity to quarterback a nfl team

    godofwine330:

Yeah a really awful pick, he should not have had higher than a 4th round grade and they take him in the 1st? You have to be a really lousy football talent scout to come up with that decision. Just pathetic.

  7. backdapack4evr says: Oct 25, 2013 3:27 PM

He will get another shot when they make the playoffs!!!!

  8. mrfrostyj says: Oct 25, 2013 3:28 PM

Not much of a chance for him in Cleveland with younger hungrier QB’s like Jeff Garcia waiting for an opportunity with the team.

  9. sdchicken says: Oct 25, 2013 3:32 PM

Good thing he is eligible for retirement with his age

  10. thegenoatkinsdiet says: Oct 25, 2013 3:35 PM

He’ll be better off riding it out this year, getting cut and going somewhere else. Cleveland is a meat grinder for QBs.

  11. aboveaveragejoe11 says: Oct 25, 2013 3:45 PM

When you miss that badly that early in the draft, it explains why bad teams remain bad. At least they got something for their other 2012 draft underperformer by unloading Trent Richardson. Poor Browns fans.

  12. debandbobzillainlove says: Oct 25, 2013 3:46 PM

so glad we have big ben! it is awesome to have a franchise QB who wins super bowls…not to rub it in your Cleveland steamers face or anything..cough cough….

  13. filthymcnasty1 says: Oct 25, 2013 3:47 PM

If he really wants to start again he’ll need to go to MN.

  14. hanifmiller says: Oct 25, 2013 3:50 PM

Two first round picks wasted by the Browns. At least they were able to secure another 1st rounder for the underperforming Trent Richardson.

Weeden better hope he gets another shot in the NFL period.

If the Browns release Weeden, he can stay busy doing a Matlock reboot.

im weeden fan but its kinda disrespectful for us too gie up on a guy not even a full 2 seasons in the NFL i dont care bout his age he’s 29-30 so what didnt the nfl give chris weinke a pass at over 30 in his 1st nfl season he last a good 3-4 years down in carolina b4 delhomme came along right? so what the hate towards this guy?? he has the tool norv system aint easy give him another seaon in 2014 with real QB im not sold on Hoyer ya just like him cause he younger and a lil more mobile?

  18. orivar says: Oct 25, 2013 3:58 PM

Anybody can be good at anything but you have to prepare. If Weeden really thinks he can start he needs to hit the film room first, maybe play some twitch video games to get his mind in that ‘GO’ mindset, work on his arm strength, etc.

  19. bengalskuta82 says: Oct 25, 2013 4:03 PM

Yeah Weeden, just like the leagues crazy, your Coach is crazy too so you never know. Get ready to play this Sunday..LOL!
Oh and about a team on the rise? hmm.. Lol! Child pleazzze! You mean a team that aims to win 4-5 games per season. I get it, that’s what you meant.

    No more gingers.

  21. losangelesbillsofbuffalo says: Oct 25, 2013 4:06 PM

I seen Weeden drunk at Paninis on W. 6th standing alone in the corner. Bro, hit up Ohio City or Tremont while you still can, the chicks there are way hotter and you could probably pull a few down before you head back south to sell cars or insurance.

Actually, “champing” is the correct word. “Chomping” is incorrect. Just sayin’.

Child Pleazze, LOL, Now we know what Chad Johnson is doing with his down time, trolling PFT on a Friday night. Yeah until the Ben Gals beat the browns this season, or make it past the first round of the playoffs, no one will take you seriously. Your Ginger starting Qb. isn’t much of an upgrade over Weeden, and definitely will not bring a Lombardi to Cinci. Enjoy temporarily being atop the AFC North, it wont last long.

After going 0-20 in regards to QB’s since our return, the odds should be in our favor, shouldn’t they??? Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then, right? Every where but Cleveland!

There are so many things wrong here that I don’t even know where to start. Horrific grammar aside, Weinke didn’t get “a good 3-4 years”. He was benched after his rookie season and spent the rest of his career as a backup. Weeden will be lucky to even get a backup gig after this.

  28. edavidberg says: Oct 25, 2013 4:48 PM

He’ll be lucky to make a team as a back up. He’s Caleb Hanie level right now.

  29. kowallazy says: Oct 25, 2013 5:01 PM

David, that’s an insult to Caleb Hanie. This guy’s not good enough to be a backup.

  30. doctorrustbelt says: Oct 25, 2013 5:31 PM

Cleveland’s receiving corps is an insult to people with hands.

  31. coltzfan166 says: Oct 25, 2013 5:53 PM

Knowing Jason Campbell, he’ll get hurt and Weeden will be right back in.

  32. jjackwagon says: Oct 25, 2013 6:47 PM

Weeden will probably get another chance on Sunday after Campbell gets injured again.

  33. slick50ks says: Oct 25, 2013 8:01 PM

He should just consider himself lucky he doesn’t have to face the Chiefs this weekend.

  34. ericsports07 says: Oct 25, 2013 11:37 PM

All you Browns fans who are hatin on Weeden will be hatin on Jason Campbell who has a long slow release and is worse than Weeden. Enjoy the misery of the Campbell experience and we will hear you whinin Monday about how much Campbell sucks LMFAO. Everyone loves the backup til they play. AKA T.J. Yates

  35. AlaskanSalmon says: Oct 26, 2013 1:24 AM

Not so fast Brandon. You were given the starting job without any competition. You blew your chance

  36. wiseone50 says: Oct 26, 2013 1:30 PM

Look, there’s no need to be hatin” on the guy. Like most draft picks, he was a gamble- and didn’t pay off, especially for a first rounder. He just doesn’t know the finer points of quarterbacking. I’m not even sure if he even knows what a pump fake is. He is a one dimensional player that just isn’t going to make it in this league. My advise to Branden: Be thankful you’ve made millions and invest those dollars wisely (dividend paying blue chips) because the easy money ‘aint gonna last. Be thankful you can walk away from the game without a limp. Everyone deserves a chance. He had his. I was screaming for them to start Hoyer and they finally went to him out of desperation. I wondered why the didn’t give Thaddeus Lewis a chance. We got rid of him and now we see he’s just won 2 games for Buffalo. I’m beginning to think I can spot talent better than these OVERPAYED front offices and coaches! It’s damn frustraiting. I’m available for hire, btw. Lol.

  37. audient says: Oct 26, 2013 1:48 PM

Browns fan here. I really wanted to see Weeden succeed. I don’t think it’s going to happen. But there is still a lot of football to play this season, and if Weeden ends up back in there, I hope he finally clicks and plays like we all hoped he would. The man doesn’t suck on purpose.

Only Brandon Weeden can break the trend and prove wrong the naysayers. Good luck with that, Brandon.

  38. 1beforeidie says: Oct 26, 2013 7:26 PM

He’ll get another chance when Campbell goes down unfortunately. Just our luck.

  39. dickgazinya says: Oct 30, 2013 11:10 PM

tell me again why they cut Thaddeus lewis to keep this douche? just dump him and sign somebody off the street. Tired of hearing about and watching him…and that look of deer in headlights every time he drops back. chaps my taint. Hes not worth a bench spot. BW if the arena league still exists, try that
