Brian Orakpo fined $15,750 for roughing Josh McCown

Brain Orakpo AP

Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo gave the Redskins an early lead last Sunday with an interception return for a touchdown, but his day wasn’t entirely positive.

Orakpo was penalized for roughing Bears quarterback Josh McCown in the third quarter of the game, a foul that has also brought a fine from the NFL. The league confirmed to PFT that Orakpo has been fined $15,750 for the play, which saw him hit McCown high and then drive him to the ground.

McCown’s pass to Alshon Jeffery fell incomplete, although the Bears were able to use the yardage from the penalty to help them move into position for a field goal. Robbie Gould missed from 34 yards, however, and the Redskins would go on to win 45-41 in a shootout at FedEx Field.

Tarik El-Bashir of CSN Washington reports that Orakpo plans to appeal the fine, although video of the play and the NFL’s history on these matters don’t do much to help his chances of getting the penalty thrown out.

This was the perfect football tackle… Unreal he was penalized much less fined. Hit QB right at the point of release, face mask in check, drive the offensive player into the ground. perfect tackle. Hope he and all the other “REDSKINS” continue to tackle this way because too many of their defensive players are arm tackling like the league wants thus producing one of the worst defenses in the league.

Suh was fined for pushing Cutler too hard from behind as he was running up field with the ball. Arbitrary NFL for ya.

So does this mean McCown took the bus after the game and skipped Orakpo’s pancake social?

Maybe the MLB should start fining pitchers for beaming batters… I don’t mind intentional dirty plays resulting in fines (Suh). Fines for accidental contact or being unable to avoid contact is pointless. How could this have been avoided playing at full speed? They’re trying to make every game look like the Pro Bowl.

Blind in one eye and cant see out of the other.
Across the board these calls are arbitrary at best.
Are you telling me the hit on the defenseless Reed Doughty did not warrant anything. Not even a look. Hypocrites.
