During the third quarter of last Sunday’s 19-16 loss to the Steelers, Ravens defensive end Elvis Dumervil was flagged for three penalties on one drive.

He was penalized for jumping offside and a late hit on Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on the same play. Dumervil then picked up a facemask penalty a few snaps later that occurred while Dumervil and defensive tackle Haloti Ngata were sacking Roethlisberger.

PFT has confirmed with the league that Dumervil was fined $7,875 for the facemask penalty.

“I got to do a better job of being aware of the strike zone,” Dumervil said after the game, via Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. “I think I played a little too aggressive. I have to do a better job and not cost the team.”

Dumervil got an object lesson in how costly those penalties can be when Shaun Suisham kicked a field goal at the end of the drive. Those points that wound up looming large at the end of the game when Suisham hit another field goal and left the Ravens with a 3-4 record heading into their bye week.

  1. I don’t see the point in the majority of the fines handed out by the league. It cost him and his team 15 yards. Isn’t that enough?

  2. This is getting ridiculous with fines. I didn’t see the play, but it probably wasn’t worth a fine! 15 yards and the coaches getting on you for it is enough! Doubt there was any intent to injure someone like Roger probably thinks.

  3. Fine the blatantly intentional violations and leave the incidental stuff to the penalty on the field. Hammer the headhunters (seriously) and stop fining guys for accidental or borderline stuff. Every flag is not worthy of a fine. Be consistent and use some common sense.

  4. He was wrapping him up with Haloti Ngata, and Dumervil happened to get his facemask a little. I cannot believe this is a fine. Ridiculous.

Also, PFT, if you were watching the game, the Steelers were already well within field goal range at that point, and the facemask was on 3rd down. Had they scored a TD and it turned out to be a 3 point game, it would be different. Steelers likely would’ve gotten a field goal on that drive anyway.

  5. Fines should be limited to unnecessary roughness after the whistle type plays. Penalties happen during games that’s why the refs have the flags. Leave the fines for dirty plays after the whistles and fights.

  6. Wasn’t worthy of a fine, but he also picked up a late hit foul…that could be the reasoning…either way a bad fine and way too many getting tossed out. The dumbest 1 is a fine for the wrong color shoes…just worry about player safety.

  7. Will every flag be accompanied by a fine in the very near future of the NFL ???

Fines should be restricted to only the most flagrant of
fouls committed. Dummervil’s doesn’t rise to that level.

To paraphrase the immortal words of coach Lombardi, ” what the hell is going on out there” in
    them NFL headquarters ?

  8. dontstabmeray,

Were the steelers Super Bowl Chumps when they failed to reach the playoffs the season after their last 2 SB wins? Being a huge steeler fan shouldn’t your username be dontrapemeben?
