Redskins say there’s no connection to “Bravehearts” trademark

Mel Getty Images

Well, it was fun while it lasted.  Even though it only lasted a few minutes.

The Redskins have forwarded the following statement to PFT in response to the item regarding the registration of the name “Washington Bravehearts” for federal trademark protection.

“There is no connection between the trademark and the Washington Redskins,” the team said.  “Dan Snyder does not know the man that was reported in the story.”

TMZ reported that Snyder and Aris Mardirossian are neighbors, and that they “formed a united front on their block a few years back — both men wanted to cut down trees on their lots but they were being blocked by the county.”

Regardless, the TMZ report launches a new frontier in the Redskins name issue.  Folks will periodically be checking for filings that possibly constitute evidence of the name the Redskins would adopt, if/when they drop the one they have.

Still think Washington Justice League is the best bet. Fits with the theme of the town and turns a negative team name issue into quite the opposite. And it gives opportunity to create following with non-residents that are comic fans plus the inherent marketing advantages of piggybacking off the brand.

I still say change it to the “Richmond Redskins”.

The we can let our political leaders (and I use that term loosely) in Washington field their own team and name it what they want.

Can you picture them on draft day debating who to select. The draft would come and go and they’d still be arguing over their first round selection.

Or picking a starting lineup – they’d be deadlocked for weeks choosing a center!

  43. ninjahawk says: Oct 25, 2013 2:55 PM

This whole debate is completely pointless, and the defense presented of that cringe-worthy name is shakier than RG3’s knee structure.

THE NAME IS GOING TO CHANGE. Nothing can stop that, it is done. The only variable that is in play is WHEN. Just get it done, change the crazy racist name. The “Washington football team” already has the known history of being owned by the biggest racist in sports who fought integration longer than any team, the whole franchise is a pathetic joke. Save what very little respect you have left and just pick a team name that isn’t literally a racial-slur.

HE stands to profit most out of any name change. New merchandising and marketing to the hundreds of thousands of fans that will ‘need’ new team apparel. Let alone the money fans will make via the likes of eBay selling old Washington merchandise and apparel to fans seeking to collectors seeking to own a piece of history.

This is already a moral victory for Snyder who has managed to slither his way into the lime-light as a victim instead of the snake he’s usually portrayed as. The trap is set and he’s ready to snatch up the profits.

    @mark0226

In my post I did not comment on the name change. Dan Snyder has an absolute right to name most of his companies whatever he wishes. This probably extends to the redskins as well. The NFL is a government protected monopoly, however, and that may enter into it. I neither know nor care.

As to my personal opinion. The redskins refer to a poll showing 90% of native Americans not being offended by the name. Assuming about 1 million native Americans (completely guessing at the number). That would mean he is intentionally offending 100,000 people. Why would anyone intentionally do that?

He should not be forced to do anything. I wish he would come to the realization of “right” on his own.

The reason the left isn’t going after the Chiefs, Indians, and Braves is those who don’t like it can vote against them in the states in which those franchises reside. D.C. is always and forever a left-wing local government, so there is no political penalty to be paid there.

  90. bluezebra58 says: Oct 25, 2013 7:37 PM

First off I’m a conservative who believes PC is out of control. I also believe in fairness. So the only fair way to keep Redskins is to name a sports team the Blackskins, Whiteskins, Brownskins or Yellowskins. If that is allowed Snyder keeps his name. Call me when monkeys fly out of someone’s butt cause that will happen also!

  91. shoeflypie says: Oct 25, 2013 7:55 PM

Upperdecker19 – you may want to learn a little bit about sports other than football. The name of the Cincinatti Reds has nothing to do with Native Americans. The team was named the Cincinnati Red STOCKINGS way back in the 19th century. For those born since 1970, “stockings” is synonymous with “socks”. For others, the 19th century means before the year 1900. Check your facts out before trying to widen the argument.

  92. mutantman87 says: Oct 25, 2013 8:01 PM

Why not change the name to the Warriors or back to the Braves (the original name of the franchise when it was in Boston) and then keep the logo? I think that even though the Redskin name may be a slur, their logo looks nice, and is a fair representation of a Native American. They could still be the Warriors with the Native logo if they wanted. I just wouldn’t want to see the name and logo become completely stupid, like the Bullets becoming the Wizards. That’s why Synder should try to compromise sooner rather than later. Revenue loss will force him to change it eventually.

Good name would be Washington Natives. Not only does it fit with current logo and image but it also would have a dual meaning in a town that is descended upon by political non-DC people through a good portion of the year.

Having said that, it’s not a huge deal if it stays Redskins. A little insensitive maybe but it’s also football where sensitivity shouldn’t be such a big deal.
