Redskins say there’s no connection to “Bravehearts” trademark

Well, it was fun while it lasted.  Even though it only lasted a few minutes.

The Redskins have forwarded the following statement to PFT in response to the item regarding the registration of the name “Washington Bravehearts” for federal trademark protection.

“There is no connection between the trademark and the Washington Redskins,” the team said.  “Dan Snyder does not know the man that was reported in the story.”

TMZ reported that Snyder and Aris Mardirossian are neighbors, and that they “formed a united front on their block a few years back — both men wanted to cut down trees on their lots but they were being blocked by the county.”

Regardless, the TMZ report launches a new frontier in the Redskins name issue.  Folks will periodically be checking for filings that possibly constitute evidence of the name the Redskins would adopt, if/when they drop the one they have.

  1. We are the Washington Redskins and no one can stop us legitimatly on the field or off the field can Dan Snyder be beaten in any case. God bless this franchise. #ThankYouGodforprotectingyourfavoriteteamfromevil

  2. Still think Washington Justice League is the best bet. Fits with the theme of the town and turns a negative team name issue into quite the opposite. And it gives opportunity to create following with non-residents that are comic fans plus the inherent marketing advantages of piggybacking off the brand.

  3. In that pic, Gibson’s shocked expression followed a text from his agent stating that his next acting gig will be as a guest star on a “very special” episode of CSI – Las Vegas.

  4. Some greedy jackass is trademarking possible new names in the hopes that Daniel Snyder will have to “buy” one from him…

  5. I could care less whether or not they change the name, but if they do, I vote for Warriors.

Rolls off the tongue and they wouldn’t even have to change the logo.

  6. I WAS leaning towards changing the name and the logo, BUT enough is enough. Now , the ACLU “The American Clueless Liberal Union” is getting involved. They want the Metrodome in Minneapolis not to display, etc. anything related to the word “Redskins” during the game between Washington and Vikings. What is the team going to called? The Washington “team without a name” vs. the Minnesota Vikings???? Drive the PCers crazy and don’t change the name.

  7. If the Steelers were forced to change their name — which would never happen — we would become the Pittsburgh Gods or or Pittsburgh Champion or Pittsburgh Rings or Pittsburgh Superiors

  8. Definitely not a Skins fan, but I have to say. Unlike the Cleveland Indians the Redskins portray strong, proud, and relentless warriors. Not a racial cliche. Maybe not the most PC name, but it’s far from the worst and depicted with strength and pride. Quit being so sensitive.

  9. This might just be a really brilliant ploy on the part of Redskins ownership/management (if they’re actually capable of such a thing) to make this whole controversy start to become so bizarre and “jump-the-shark”-ish that it just goes away.

  10. We wake up in the morning and look and the mirror, sigh, and say, “wow, it is amazing being a Steeler fan, and therefore a superior being.” Have you ever felt that? Of course you haven’t.

  11. If only Snyder were 7 feet tall and could shoot fireballs from his eyes, and bolts of lightning from his arse….

  12. “Sons of Washington, you have come to fight as Redskins, and Redskins you are. Will you fight?”

“Fight against that, and be hated eternally? No, we will cave in, and we will be liked by everyone in the media.”

“Aye, fight and you may be hated. Cave in, and you will be liked….at least a while.”

“And dying in your beds years from now, would be willing to trade all the days between this day and that, for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies, that they can slander us in the media and ruin our reputations, but they’ll never take our name?!”

    “Redskins!!! Redskins!!! Redskins!!!!”

  13. Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you’ll live… at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin’ to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they’ll never take… OUR NICKNAME!

  14. “both men wanted to cut down trees on their lots but they were being blocked by the county”

Except that Little Danny cut down the trees anyway, for which he was fined by the government and forced to plant replacements (although the ones he planted obviously were not an adequate replacement for the mature ones he cut down, but then of course one rarely sees the words “maturity” and “Snyder” used together).

  15. Tic Tock, what’s that you ask, the clocking ticking down until the name is changed. It’s inevitable!

You realize the ACLU isn’t remotely liberal, right? It is the American Civil Liberties Union, which stands by, well, American civil liberties. Many liberals actually bash this organization for its backing of gun rights. The US needs more organizations like the ACLU.

  17. I still say change it to the “Richmond Redskins”.

The we can let our political leaders (and I use that term loosely) in Washington field their own team and name it what they want.

Can you picture them on draft day debating who to select. The draft would come and go and they’d still be arguing over their first round selection.

Or picking a starting lineup – they’d be deadlocked for weeks choosing a center!

  18. This whole debate is completely pointless, and the defense presented of that cringe-worthy name is shakier than RG3’s knee structure.

THE NAME IS GOING TO CHANGE. Nothing can stop that, it is done. The only variable that is in play is WHEN. Just get it done, change the crazy racist name. The “Washington football team” already has the known history of being owned by the biggest racist in sports who fought integration longer than any team, the whole franchise is a pathetic joke. Save what very little respect you have left and just pick a team name that isn’t literally a racial-slur.

  19. Skip ahead 20 years.
We’re going to tell our grandkids that this team use to be called the Washington Redskins but they were forced to change their name.
    “what for Gramps?”
    “not really sure son”
    ” by who Gramps?”
“hell,I don’t really know son,Quit askin me questions ,I’m trying to watch this damn flag football game”

ACLU not liberal? That’s a laugh. Look at what they actually represent, not who they CLAIM to represent.

  21. Redskins!

The Redskins is a privately owned company. It is NOT government’s role to force a private person or business to change their name or anything else because one person or group finds something about the company or business person, “offensive”.

An apple fell on my foot once, it hurt, every since then I am “offended” by apples. Therefore I DEMAND that “Apple” change their company name because it is “offensive” to me.

No way you say? Oh so it’s good for one company but not for the other?

  22. It’s only the 200th story since the beginning of the football season. So who’s trying to brainwash to low information voter.

  23. Hey wise up EVERYBODY – Why would Snyder change his company name, a corporation’s most valuable commodity, if said logo is not harming the bottom line. This just in – Snyder is a businessman. Profit/Loss. Not political whimsy. And Collingsworth – I find your and Costas’ opinions offensive, so change them.

  24. Tick tock…the term will never sound better than it did 80 years ago, and in the future it will only sound worst. It’s a matter of time.

Anyone notice how these things never happen in Pittsburgh?
    *********************
That’s because no one outside of Pittsburgh cares about Pittsburgh.

  26. “Well, it was fun while it lasted. Even though it only lasted a few minutes.”

This story is not fun and it is lasting way too long.

  27. the same people that support that racist name are the same people that get angry at interracial couples.

  28. the ACLU is simply for favoring the indivdual’s rights over those of the government. In most cases, they tend to fall on the liberal side of issues. That said, don’t we all want all of our individual rights protected from intrusion. Before you stereotype and bash the ACLU, ask yourself which of our civil rights do you want to give up?

We should all support their “agenda”

  29. you just have to keep this BS name change story going because after all, the native Americans aren’t

    Pittsburgh RUST

  31. How about the Washington Milquetoasts… for buckling under intense liberal, media pressure? They could replace the redskin logo with a used condom or tampex.

  32. Dude, what is the deal on here? I post “Way to trust TMZ as a reliable source” and I get deleted?

But it’s more reasonable for people to post “4skins” on here? What’s the point of having a comments section if you can’t take your own criticism you so willingly give out everyday?

  33. I remember another Washington team… the Bullets… who were forced to exchange their name, too.

If you bleeding hearts out there want them to change the name that badly… then don’t buy season tickets… money talks you knucklef@ckingheads… and bull$h!t walks.

Otherwise why not grab a cup of Shut the heck up?

  34. The Bravehearts will strike fear and disgust into the hearts of opposing teams when they unleash their new defensive scheme… as they turn and moon the opposing offenses… HTTB!

  35. gnomad says: “The ACLU is simply for favoring the indivdual’s rights over those of the government.”

How about Dan Snyder’s right to name the team he owns whatever he wants, over the rights of the Oneida Nation and Obama’s opinion?

It’s a private business. If the team name was so horrible, then surely he would not be making a profit because no one would support the business.

  36. Quick question… Is ‘logicalvoicesays’ serious with these comments?

I appreciate satire when delivered well and can usually spot it, but I can’t help but try to determine if this guy is being satirical, commenting from inside some delusional sports fantasy, or just needs “help”. If he’s completely serious, that’s just kind of sad.

  37. TMZ reported that Snyder and Aris Mardirossian are neighbors, and that they “formed a united front on their block a few years back — both men wanted to cut down trees on their lots but they were being blocked by the county.”
    ————————————————-

Then later that year, they teamed up to rent a bouncy-house for the neighborhood picnic.

  38. Snyder should commit to a name change like the politicians are now demanding. He can honor them with something like ‘the reptiles’. So befitting a team from DC.

  39. This right here?

“zam0854 says: THE HORSE RIDES THE INDIAN IN THE MATCH UP ON SUNDAY”

Yeah. This kind of thing is why it needs to be changed.

  40. dryzzt23 says: Redskins! . . . An apple fell on my foot once, it hurt, every since then I am “offended” by apples. Therefore I DEMAND that “Apple” change their company name because it is “offensive” to me . . . No way you say? Oh so it’s good for one company but not for the other

You can’t actually be dumb enough to believe that’s a valid analogy, can you?

  41. Some people say that proponents of the Redskins name resort to “shouting down” the other side.

However those folks should also realize that deletion of an unemotional, reasonable, respectful, but contrary comment is the ultimate form of “shouting down.”

  42. You right wingers are so tightly wound that you’re now afraid of your own shadows. Defending ‘poor disenfranchised’ Dan Snyder?! Can’t you see the end game? HE stands to profit most out of any name change. New merchandising and marketing to the hundreds of thousands of fans that will ‘need’ new team apparel. Let alone the money fans will make via the likes of eBay selling old Washington merchandise and apparel to fans seeking to collectors seeking to own a piece of history.

This is already a moral victory for Snyder who has managed to slither his way into the lime-light as a victim instead of the snake he’s usually portrayed as. The trap is set and he’s ready to snatch up the profits.

  43. @mark0226

In my post I did not comment on the name change. Dan Snyder has an absolute right to name most of his companies whatever he wishes. This probably extends to the redskins as well. The NFL is a government protected monopoly, however, and that may enter into it. I neither know nor care.

As to my personal opinion. The redskins refer to a poll showing 90% of native Americans not being offended by the name. Assuming about 1 million native Americans (completely guessing at the number). That would mean he is intentionally offending 100,000 people. Why would anyone intentionally do that?

He should not be forced to do anything. I wish he would come to the realization of “right” on his own.

  44. there isnt much doubt that this steelers poster is really florio undercover, how else do his posts stay on here in every article, meanwhile every post i attempt to make gets deleted no matter how unoffending it is. florio is from WV and probably wagons the steelers so all things point towards him

  45. The reason the left isn’t going after the Chiefs, Indians, and Braves is those who don’t like it can vote against them in the states in which those franchises reside. D.C. is always and forever a left-wing local government, so there is no political penalty to be paid there.

  46. First off I’m a conservative who believes PC is out of control. I also believe in fairness. So the only fair way to keep Redskins is to name a sports team the Blackskins, Whiteskins, Brownskins or Yellowskins. If that is allowed Snyder keeps his name. Call me when monkeys fly out of someone’s butt cause that will happen also!

  47. Upperdecker19 – you may want to learn a little bit about sports other than football. The name of the Cincinatti Reds has nothing to do with Native Americans. The team was named the Cincinnati Red STOCKINGS way back in the 19th century. For those born since 1970, “stockings” is synonymous with “socks”. For others, the 19th century means before the year 1900. Check your facts out before trying to widen the argument.

  48. Why not change the name to the Warriors or back to the Braves (the original name of the franchise when it was in Boston) and then keep the logo? I think that even though the Redskin name may be a slur, their logo looks nice, and is a fair representation of a Native American. They could still be the Warriors with the Native logo if they wanted. I just wouldn’t want to see the name and logo become completely stupid, like the Bullets becoming the Wizards. That’s why Synder should try to compromise sooner rather than later. Revenue loss will force him to change it eventually.

  49. If you’re trying to get away from racist connotations, I’m not sure anything Mel Gibson related is the way to go!..Washington Warriors sounds like a pretty good name to me. That way you don’t have to change the helmet.

  50. The ACLU comes to the defense of ANYBODY
(even scumbags: google “ACLU Comes to Rush Limbaugh’s Defense”) whose civil rights are being abused.

  51. Yet Stephen A. Smith is allowed to senselesy drop N bombs on the radio left and right and keep his job. Media trying to control the sports world when they cant even control themselves. Disgrace

  52. Good name would be Washington Natives. Not only does it fit with current logo and image but it also would have a dual meaning in a town that is descended upon by political non-DC people through a good portion of the year.

Having said that, it’s not a huge deal if it stays Redskins. A little insensitive maybe but it’s also football where sensitivity shouldn’t be such a big deal.
