As the Buccaneers slide to 0-7 (to be surpassed inevitably by the Jaguars on Sunday), the team inches closer to implosion. And the players are having a hard time selling any other reality.
Cornerback Darrelle Revis provided a candid assessment of the situation after Thursday night’s game, via JoeBucsFan.com.
“Do you believe collectively this team still believes in the scheme and the coaching staff?” Revis was asked by Kevin O’Donnell of FOX 13.
“I don’t know,” Revis said. “I don’t know. You know, we got a game plan every week. We gotta stick to the game plan. We gotta abide by the game plan and what we’re trying to do to win. I don’t think guys are literally going out there and trying to do their own thing. You know, in every game there are mistakes up and down the board. You know, the word that we have to get to and we have to focus on is consistency. That’s all. And at this point, that’s a hard word for us to try to do, to try to do that, to be consistent.”
Per JoeBucsFan.com, Revis also said he didn’t know if coach Greg Schiano will soon be fired.
After last night’s embarrassing defeat on national television and with the next home game to be televised by ESPN on Monday Night Football in 17 days, it’s hard not to think the end is near.
In the interim, the Buccaneers travel to Seattle. Yes, Seattle. Barring what would be at this point a major upset, they’ll return to Tampa to host the Dolphins with a record of 0-8. And the scene that will be broadcast from sea to shining sea, and beyond, will not be a pretty one.
While there’s now a mini-bye before the game against the Seahawks, the question becomes whether ownership would want to throw an interim coach to the wolves by making the change before the next game. Either way, failure to make a change before the next home game could set the stage for one of the more memorable Monday nights in recent history, for reasons other than the game on the field.
