Revis says he doesn’t know if teammates believe in the coaching staff

AP

As the Buccaneers slide to 0-7 (to be surpassed inevitably by the Jaguars on Sunday), the team inches closer to implosion.  And the players are having a hard time selling any other reality.

Cornerback Darrelle Revis provided a candid assessment of the situation after Thursday night’s game, via JoeBucsFan.com.

“Do you believe collectively this team still believes in the scheme and the coaching staff?” Revis was asked by Kevin O’Donnell of FOX 13.

I don’t know,” Revis said.  “I don’t know.  You know, we got a game plan every week.  We gotta stick to the game plan.  We gotta abide by the game plan and what we’re trying to do to win.  I don’t think guys are literally going out there and trying to do their own thing.  You know, in every game there are mistakes up and down the board.  You know, the word that we have to get to and we have to focus on is consistency.  That’s all.  And at this point, that’s a hard word for us to try to do, to try to do that, to be consistent.”

Per JoeBucsFan.com, Revis also said he didn’t know if coach Greg Schiano will soon be fired.

After last night’s embarrassing defeat on national television and with the next home game to be televised by ESPN on Monday Night Football in 17 days, it’s hard not to think the end is near.

In the interim, the Buccaneers travel to Seattle.  Yes, Seattle.  Barring what would be at this point a major upset, they’ll return to Tampa to host the Dolphins with a record of 0-8.  And the scene that will be broadcast from sea to shining sea, and beyond, will not be a pretty one.

While there’s now a mini-bye before the game against the Seahawks, the question becomes whether ownership would want to throw an interim coach to the wolves by making the change before the next game.  Either way, failure to make a change before the next home game could set the stage for one of the more memorable Monday nights in recent history, for reasons other than the game on the field.

  1. Getting ugly in Tampa – from what I saw last night it was every man for himself and no one running any type of game plan. Schiano’s days are numbered in my opinion. Not a matter of “if”, but “when”.

  2. They have been VERY consistent! Zero wins. How much more consistent can you get.
We here in Atlanta salute the bux for hanging in there with that loser Schiano. Don’t ever fire him! At least keep him until the next Falcons game!
Hahaha, laughing at Warren Sapp and his idiot homer pre-game prediction.
At one point before I turned off the game, you could see the pathetic panthers were just walking up to the LOS and executing whatever they wanted. You could just see their confidence.
Schiano is like the Republican party right now. They are achieving nothing, crowing about everything, and everybody knows they are simply awful.

  3. The only bright side to the Revis trade for the Bucs is that they didn’t trade away this year’s number one!
Gotta hand it to Idzik. As great as Revis is, a $16mm CB does not a team make.

  4. Welcome to the NFL coach. Where spoiled rotten millionaire’s will whine you out of a job. Would love to see players try this crap on Knoll, Landry, Parcells, Shula, Lombardi etc. The same type coaches Schanio appears to be patterning his total control method of coaching after. Bucs went from a players coach(ala Wade Phillips) to a hardass and can’t deal with it.

  5. Here it comes, folks. Revis will not jeopardize his future earnings by playing out the string of what could be an 0-16 season. Get ready for a phantom injury, followed by a trade request.

  6. Which Head coach would u rather have?
    A. Josh McDaniels
    B. Todd Haley
    C. Greg Schiano
    D. Miley Cyrus

100% – D!.. at lease she would be entertaining ….smh

  7. It is so much easier to chant “fire the coach” than “why don’t we have a O line that can run block or protect; why hasn’t our D line pressured the QB in years; why did we start the season without a tight end; why do we have one nfl caliber receiver; why didn’t our rookie QB have to beat out a legitimate veteran for the job; why do receivers run wide open (2 receivers in the endzone all alone, really?) when we aren’t in man/why are always in zone coverage?

So there is an extended week to find a GM, Oline coach, D coordinator, O coordinator, and head coach. Better get going, Glazers

  8. As a giants fan who sat through the train wreck that was Bill Sheridan , defensive coordinator , I can’t disagree with revis. And as a UConn grad I pray that the Schiano to storrs rumors aren’t true because I cannot root for that guy

  9. If the Bucs respected Schiano, Revis would say they do. If the Bucs didn’t respect Schiano, Revis would say he doesn’t know.

    …He doesn’t know. Later Schiano.

  10. As a bucs fan I don’t even have words. As much as I have grown to dislike Schiano if he could’ve gotten us back to winning all the hate would’ve went away, all the negativity would be gone. I wouldn’t care if Revis is in zone half the game if we were say 5-2 or 4-3. Do you think I want to admit that our coaching picks and possibly our GM have been failures the past 5 years?! NO but it looks that way and hopefully the Glazers do the right thing for the community and the team and pull the plug on this guy. Have Wandstedt or Davis run the team the rest of the year and really do some evaluating of proven head coaches and/or talented OC’s in the pro level. This team has a lot of talent and with a top draft pick it looks like we are heading for we should be able to bounce back next year with a majority of pieces in place.

  11. I say fire Greg now. Those players need a spark. To think that this team is just as bad as Jax given the names on the roster, makes you wonder what is going on in the playcalling and schemes.

  12. at what point do we all collectively agree that revis and all his holdouts was the ringleader of the so called “circus” in new york? coincidence that he leaves and the jets have a winning record and the bucs are winless??

  13. I was actually considering flying out to Seattle to see the game this year, but then I decided to fly to Seattle in December to see Pearl Jam instead. Good choice.

  14. Terrible trade. Why did the Bucs trade away a 1st round pick and pay 16 mil a year for a CB that isn’t even 100% healthy? The GM Mark Dominick needs to be fired with the coach.

  15. It’s official: the Glazers are the worst owners in all of pro sports! By keeping Schiaron around shows that they don’t care about the team and most importantly the fans! At least Shad seems genuinely intent in trying to make the Jags better, but these guys have completely given up! Poor fans I feel sorry for you guys.

  16. I feel for you Bucs fans. It’s like getting slapped in the face every week for the Bucs to continue to employ this HC. Fire him already!

  17. Not to mention the 0-6 “hangover” teams have after playing Seattle this year……which would put the Bucs at 0-9 after Miami. 0-9!!!

Schiano clearly only knows for himself only one way to play, win and “do” football. Whatever that is….whatever that recipe is…..CLEARLY does not work at the professional football level.

  18. Why is he not gone yet? I figured they gave him this game so the interim would have 10 days to prepare for next Sunday. Smh.

COME ON BUCS, LISTEN TO YOUR CITY!

  19. At some point, the network/NFL should have the flex option to move a game off Monday night football. Maybe show Heidi.

  20. I can’t even believe people are making Revis out to be a circus ring leader. All the man has done his whole career was shut down one side of the field. the Jets now have a QB, which is why they are playing better. Tampa has him playing zone coverage when he is a the best shutdown corner damn near ever. That’s bad coaching. Period!!! You can have all the talent in the world, but if you can’t scheme or put them in the positions to be most effective, you will be a loser every time.

  21. When initially hired, I liked Schiano.

Now I can’t wait til he is gone.

All the blowouts and last minute losses come down to coaching.

Fire him now and let Butch Davis or Dave Wannstedt take over the rest of the season.

Then hire LOVIE SMITH next year.

  22. The GM is not getting enough of the blame.

Schiano has to go as that team does not look prepared to play or interested in playing, but they should have won a few games by now.

That team is not as talented as people thought and that falls on the GM as well.

  23. I tried to defend Schiano, but he’s done. Revis’ comments confirm that the coach has lost his players.

Glazers went from super bowl to DB assistant as coach to College coach. I sure hope they don’t hire a high school coach next.

  24. If he and everyone else would shut up and focus on their own jobs many of their problems would take care of themselves.. Of course nobody wants to take any blame but prefer to point fingers!

  25. All Schiano needs is clown shoes on the sidelines and he would be right in. Listening to halftime where nearly every person that speaks has negative things to say about his coaching style on National TV made me embarrassed for the guy when the score turned lopsided. When Tampa fumbled the PR and had two of their own players half-heartily fighting to get the ball said enough.

Revis shouldn’t talk much about doing their job because the tape he has put out this year is dreadful. That tackle attempt on the Williams TD was pathetic and he can’t get off a Ted Ginn Jr block to try tackle Cam who is walking for a TD?

    ————–

Reportedly, he’s not 100%, by Revis’ own account. He admitted that sometimes he feels he can’t cut loose. That could be why Revis plays zone and lines up 8 yard behind the receiver. Or, the def. coord. is a schmuck and doesn’t know what he’s doing. Yesterday, when he was playing press on Smith, Revis did what he has done his entire career to receivers, shut them down flat.

I hate that Revis left the Jets. He wanted more money and the Jets were looking to unload him for draft picks. Who’d my Jets get? They picked a CR with the 9th pick who has had injuries and not only can he not stay on the field, but he’s not that good at all. I’m hoping Revis gets sick of Tampa and the Jets get their heads screwed on right and find a way to make him our CB again. Combine him with our new D-line that’s been playing well this season and we’d be monsters.

  27. Having the Glazers as owners AND Schiano as a coach makes it really difficult to be a fan of this team! My have to abandon ship and root for Dolphins, Jags or Saints. It’s not you it’s me? (Obviously it’s you)

  28. I *almost* felt bad for the Bucs fans last night every time the camera panned to the fans with the dejected and defeated looks on their faces. They didn’t look angry, just resigned to their fate.

  29. Well I think its pretty clear at this point in the season which organization got the best of the Mevis trade!!

    A shut down D lineman (Richardson) + 1st & 3rd rounders >>> A overpaid, overhyped over the hill corner.

He couldn’t have landed in a more perfect place…

    GO JETS!!!

Actually, the Jets took Sheldon Richardson with the 13th pick they got back from the Revis trade and all indications have him as an early favorite for Defensive Rookie of Year.

But yes, Milliner has been quite unproductive for the Jets.

  31. I’m not defending Schiano, but Freeman was benched because he sucked. Just like our center was moved last night because he couldn’t snap the ball.

  32. In the interim, the Buccaneers travel to Seattle. Yes, Seattle.

Looks like the Seahawks will be 8-1 heading into the Atlanta game…er, 9-1 heading into the Minnesota game…er, 10-1 heading into the bye week and then the next game they have any chance of being challenged (they’ll still be the favorite tho)…Saints at home.

  33. When are the Glazers going to do the right thing and grace us with a “Schiano fired” headline. It’s way past due. He’s lost 9 out of his last 10 games or something absurd. It’s exactly why you fire coaches.

    Correction: As great as Revis…was

  35. That was an unfair question to ask Revis! What did you expect him to say? What he said was more enlightening about the state of the franchise, but I noticed he didn’t come to Schiano’s defense either, no players have!! 12 out of 13 games resulted in losses? 7 straight home loses? He’s record is worse that Raheem Morris at the same stage in their careers!! #FireSchiano already Glazer Family!! If not, you will lose the City of Tampa……

  36. I hate that Revis left the Jets. He wanted more money and the Jets were looking to unload him for draft picks. Who’d my Jets get? They picked a CR with the 9th pick who has had injuries and not only can he not stay on the field, but he’s not that good at all.

You’re absolutely correct. But what I’m saying is they could’ve used the 9th pick on Richardson and keep Revis, instead of drafting a CB replacement who’s been injury prone and unproductive. I think you’re a Jets fan; imagine having one half of the field blanketed and, finally, a real pass rush? We could be a top 5 defense in all categories.

  37. I’m a life long Saints fan so I have a long and sometime painful history with the Bucs. I was unlucky enough to be sitting in the Dome when the Bucs won their first game. But , all of that aside I think the bucks fans deserve better than this. What I would caution people is that the NFL has a great marketing unit in place. It’s very possible that this team just isn’t as talented the bucks PR machine made it. You are what you are and right now this is a 0and7 football team. Sorry Bucks fan I hope you come out of this soon
