Broncos get scare from Washington, rally for runaway win

Washington Redskins v Denver Broncos Getty Images

On the first play of the fourth quarter, the Broncos trailed Washington 21-14 and faced a 4th-and-goal from the Redskins’ one-yard-line.

The Broncos converted, with Peyton Manning throwing a TD pass to reserve tight end Joel Dreessen. It was the first of four touchdowns for Denver in a 31-point fourth quarter, one that propelled the Broncos a 45-21 victory.

The Broncos forced five fourth-quarter turnovers, with three committed by Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III. On the second of his two fourth-quarter picks, Griffin suffered a left knee injury on a hit by Broncos defensive tackle Terrance Knighton. Griffin did not return to the game, but early reports suggest Griffin is fine.

The Broncos’ defense surrendered just 266 yards to Washington. Griffin didn’t play well before leaving, completing 15-of-30 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked three times.

Manning didn’t have his best game, either. He was picked three times, all in the second half. The first of those interceptions was returned for a score by Washington cornerback DeAngelo Hall, giving the Redskins a 21-7 lead with 11:25 left in the third quarter.

However, the Redskins’ offense couldn’t get anything going thereafter, and the Broncos’ offense eventually kicked into gear. So did the Denver defense, whose takeaways helped set up 10 second-half points. Overall, Denver would score 38 unanswered points to finish the game.

Aside from the picks, Manning was, well, Manning, completing 30-of-44 passes for 354 yards and four touchdowns. Wes Welker, Demaryius Thomas and Knowshon Moreno had TD catches for Denver, which is now 7-1 and has its bye next week.

The Redskins fell to 2-5. Washington hosts San Diego next Sunday.

Redskins are paying the price for Shanahan’s decisions from last season. As a Bronco fan I use to think he was a good coach but recent history has changed my mind.

I like there not being a mention that the pick 6 was all because Demaryius fell. Apparently though Manning should be able to look into the future and know that his receiver will botch a simple route and not throw it. Tom Brady would know that since Brady is perfect according to the media and any time he turns the ball over or has a lousy game it is because of EVERYONE else around him.

His other two picks were stupid throws though. No clue why he is forcing long balls to guys tightly covered when he wasn’t doing that earlier this year. Maybe too much confidence.

    Where is InShanahanWeTrust???

Weren’t you running your mouth about this game?

Knowshon Moreno in my mind is the reason the broncos have won these close games. I don’t understand why defenses blitz manning and just let this guy roam in the backfield by himself. I would dedicate atleast one guy to make sure the running back is fully covered, and forget blitzing manning. Moreno and welker are the guys who seem to come up with the big plays on third down.

New England…how could they not resign Wes welker? I think that will go down as one of the most colossally stupid moves in nfl history. He wasn’t even asking for an overwhelming amount of money. Sure he dropped a pass in the Super Bowl but a guy like that can be the difference between going to the Super Bowl and not.

    Good win for the Broncos.

I am a bit worried about the upcoming schedule though. Anybody else notice that Peytons passes laced much zip at all the entire game. I think the ankle problem was a bit bigger than it was made out to be…….

In related news… Washington changes their team name to “Shanahan” , ending the long time racial dispute. When asked about his new found willingness to change the team name , Mr. Snyder replied, “Shanahan and Redskins are basically the same thing.”

Logical voice is probably still eating the huge pile of crow at his doorstep, he will be back though without fail with his senseless banter.

It was a Shanahan who cost the Skins this game but it was Kyle’s fault not Mike that we lost this game. He got away from the run in the 3rd quarter when there was no reason to Alfred Morris was averaging 7 yards a pop and Roy Helu was running the ball well, but for some strange reason he got nervous and started calling passing plays instead of keeping running it because the Broncos were showing no signs of stopping it.

As bad as RG3 was today, I think it’s clear that he’s better than Cousins. that dude played well for one and a half games but has looked terrible otherwise. He barely played and threw 2 picks.

  12. theblowtorchreview says: Oct 27, 2013 11:56 PM

Any team that blows a 21-7 3rd quarter lead should be forced to change their name…..to the Washington Chokers!

  13. wholelottaawesome says: Oct 28, 2013 12:05 AM

Skins almost fooled everyone today. Almost. That D has to be changed or this will happen 10-12 times a year until it does.

  14. mythaimyke says: Oct 28, 2013 12:49 AM

What the guy you said “Griffin” was a top QB in the NFL! He’s a joke!!!! He couldn’t carry Manning’s jock strap, because he would turn it over! His new name is one and done!!!!He won’t even be a back-up in 2 years!

  15. MyTeamsAllStink says: Oct 28, 2013 1:42 AM

Does Shanahan have melanoma? He should she a doctor

  16. osiris33 says: Oct 28, 2013 2:10 AM

Shanahan is the smartest coach in NFL history. He knew he’d never win a Super Bowl with Elway at QB, so he gave the ball to Terrelle Davis 35 times.

  17. mataug says: Oct 28, 2013 2:11 AM

I cannot believe that the offense is the reason that we lost that game. At least there will be a high pick in the draft next season.

    in the second round…

  18. samquix says: Oct 28, 2013 2:58 AM

You can stop Manning and them donkeys for a quarter or 2 but when they turn it on, holy crap. Never have I respected a team I hate more. As a charger fan I long for the days of Cutler and Orton. That said the skins didn’t look all that impressive. Guess I’ll find out Sunday. Football is awesome

I don’t know how you can say that was a drop by Welker in the Super Bowl.

That’s what pats fans say, to cover for Tom Brady, but that ball was high and wide and clearly not a drop.

  20. vicvinegar00 says: Oct 28, 2013 5:14 AM

Maybe it is time to get a OC in there who isn’t a blood relative to the HC.

  21. blackqbwhiterb says: Oct 28, 2013 5:23 AM

Kyle Shanahan apparently doesn’t understand Momentum…. When Denver tied it at 21, it was time to run the ball, slow them down, burn some clock, and change field position, if not score… He had them throw 3 passes, which all fell incomplete, and then punt( which turned out to be the shanked one)….. Washington gave them back the ball after chewing up 24 seconds, and the game was lost right there…
Additionally, why does RG3 now remind me of Jason Campbell- dropping back and looking around trying to figure out where to throw? There’s no quick routes, dink&dunk, being called? Kyle again…. He’s got to get rid of the ball!!

  22. theskinsman says: Oct 28, 2013 5:38 AM

No rational Redskins fan saw this game ending well for the Skins.I saw some flashes of defense, and that may be all I can say the Redskins can take from this humiliation.

We’re the best 2-5 Team in DC and have given up the most points against through 7 games.

    Jim Haslett is a genius.

Too bad RG III can’t play Defense I guess?

Here’s the running of the the mouth pony fans. Don’t worry about the Redskins because were all good. As I look at the rest of the schedule The Redskins will Win their remaining games from here on out. You heard it first on pft. As far as the game goes yes I have no idea why they stop running the ball and no roll outs on passing or bootlegs as well. If they would of done that at 21-7 the game would of been over.

  26. richiebburg says: Oct 28, 2013 8:15 AM

rg3 is realllllly bad. If he isn’t gonna run he is a below average NFL quarterback.

  27. mackie66 says: Oct 28, 2013 8:22 AM

    Redskins scare??? Not hardly.
Broncos comment two turnovers allowing the Redskins the short field. This game was never in question from the opening kick-off.

  28. forsbergler says: Oct 28, 2013 11:46 AM

The Zone read stretch runs were working early for the Redskins and had the broncos D Line gased by the second half. Then LB’s started setting the egde and stuffing the runs for losses. I seen alot of dropped balls by Redskin WR’s in key downs and situations. This is what cqaused the calapse. I felt bad for RGIII even as a bronco fan because after years of watching this offense in Denver I know that it isn’t built to come from behind. Denvers def is unrelenting on QB when they have the lead. I’m pretty sure they are told to go out and hurt the other QB. That’s why RGIII got pulled, not because he was hurt. I’m sure we will see a few suspenstions come out of this game. I still think Redskins will be ok this season, they are rounding into form and were outmatched by a team a much more talented team. Lets remember that the Bronco’s have made everyone look bad so I wouldn’t worry to much about this loss

  29. fringetastic says: Oct 28, 2013 1:28 PM

What a lame summary of the game. The highlight of the game should be how Washington abandoned a running game that was working well while they _had the lead_ in an away game.

Horrible playcalling by the OC late in the 3rd and early 4th quarters. HORRIBLE.

  30. drewzducks says: Oct 28, 2013 2:16 PM

Hamburglar…the Broncos have made EVERYONE look bad ? Even Irsay is smart enough to know that is a falsehood.
