Calvin Johnson leads Lions to victory in an NFL classic

These are the games that make us love football.

Unless you’re a Cowboys fan. Then these are the games that break your heart.

Calvin Johnson showed once again that he’s the best receiver in the NFL, catching 14 passes for 329 yards, and in an amazing back-and-forth game, the Lions won 31-30.

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford scored the game-winning touchdown on a stunning play with 12 seconds left. After hitting Johnson on a deep ball down to the 1-yard line, Stafford screamed at his teammates to get into position to let him spike the ball and stop the clock. But once the ball was snapped, instead of spiking it Stafford simply lunged forward toward the goal line and picked up a one-yard rushing touchdown.

Turnovers were a huge problem for Detroit. Johnson lost a fumble, and so did Reggie Bush (who really needs to learn to hold onto the ball properly). Stafford threw two interceptions. But a tremendous fourth quarter by the Lions’ offense turned things around.

For the Cowboys, the heartbreaking loss featured two touchdown catches by receiver Dez Bryant (who boasted last week, incorrectly, that he can do whatever Johnson can do), and also featured a sideline meltdown by Bryant, who yelled at teammates and coaches alike. The Cowboys are still in first place in the NFC East, but they have some regrouping to do.

The Lions, on the other hand, head into their bye week feeling great. At 5-3 they’re playoff contenders, and with Megatron, they have the best playmaker in football.

  1. Dez Bryant was trying to rally the troops after that TD, didn’t you see it? See I saw the play that made him so mad, the Stafford TD, and clearly, Dez as trying to get everyone to realize there is next week, and they were all going to Dave and Busters later so they’d still have a good day!

Dez is a moron, and so is any MORON who defends him. His own teams hates him. Owens 2.0.

  2. I think Stafford should be given most of the credit for this win rather than Megatron. Stafford bailed the Lions out at the end.

  3. Quick, I need the media to blame Romo for that collapse.

I also need the media to not make a big deal of that comeback when they went orgasmic over Brady/the Pats comeback against the Saints. I watched both game winning drives and Stafford was far more impressive than Brady was. Stafford had a good game especially when his first pick was a drop by Calvin.

Can’t wait to see this latest example of the media’s bias.

  4. Gutsy play by Stafford at the end. The DL was asleep because they assumed he would spike it. If they are awake and stop him on that play it could have really put us in a bind if he wouldn’t have stayed upright to then toss the ball away and hopefully get another play. But his gambling trick worked and paid off, so that was pretty cool!

As far as the DL is concerned, like they had something better to do with their lives and time for those few seconds than to stand around and stare at the sky. What a horrible coaching job all day by Garrett. The Lions played a horrible game loaded with TOs and still won the game. This team should be ashamed of themselves for how poor of a job they did at executing basic things all day long.

Thanks for freebie, we really needed this one.

  5. If I was Dallas, I’d give $100.00 bucks to Dez and tell him to make his own way back to Dallas.

No way he’s going with the TEAM on the bus and the plane.

Dez a #1? What a jerk and Calvin is in his own world. Great game and win.

The 12th man is looking at you Detroit. Maybe in round #2.

    Go Hawks!

  6. Matthew Stafford on that last play:

“Spike spike spike spike spike! Guess what day it is?”

    “JUMP DAAAY!”

  7. Unreal. I’ve never seen a performance from a WR like that in my life. Double-teaming him isn’t enough.

  8. I trashed Stafford after last week’s game, but that was ice water in the veins style at the end of that one. I loved how the Cowboys just assumed the spike was coming, and Stafford just made it happen himself.

  9. What on earth was that last play the Cowboys ran? Why would you call all that nonsense flipping the ball backwards when you’ve got twelve seconds, two timeouts left, and all you need is to get into field goal range with one second left?

  10. Watching Dallas attempting to play the Tampa 2 is painful. For starters the Tampa 2 only works if you have a good pass rush. Second the players constantly seem to be out of position. I know they’re not playing it all of the time or even most of the time, but still. Kiffin’s defense is all about being in the right place at the right time and the Cwords just aren’t doing it.

  11. My 8 yr. old conducts himself with more composure than Dez Bryant. What a complete embarrassment for the Cowboys organization. Nice game by Megatron though.

  12. My St Louis Cardinals supporting roommate said that no NFL game could match yesterday’s finish. Wish he was around when I watching this on redzone 🙂

  13. The Lions need to display Dez Bryant’s non-sensical claims above Calvin’s locker forever. 300+ yards, Megatron was unstoppable.

  14. While I’m pissed about the loss- a simple kneel down would have made things alot easier for the Cowboys, I’m more pissed at how clueless the announcers were by saying the Cowboys had it when there was 1:07 left in the clock.

Oh yeah, with these spike plays, I’m telling my D guys to pound them in the future as you never know when someone is going to pull something “sneaky”. Great play by Stafford though.

    Dave

  15. As a Giants fan, all I can say is HOW ABOUT THEM COWBOYS!!??? LOL.

Sorry but I don’t care if we are 2-6, that loss put the biggest smile on my face.

I really wish they would have panned to Skeletor’s ( I mean Jerry Jones) face!

  16. Great Game by Stafford and Calvin Johnson…….Wonder what Dez’s future is….He was out of control for apparently very little reason.

  17. We saw why Megatron is Megatron, and MegaDiva is MegaDiva.

Dallas has the wrong culture. Cheering a loss that happened because Romo threw a late game INT. Now Bryant showing how Dallas doesn’t have the culture needed to win.

Sad. Jerry Jones is ultimately to blame.

  18. As a Vikes fan, I’ve got to say, I like the Lions’ core of players.

Not so much Suh, but CJ, MS, RBush, Delmas and co. make up a solid team.

Since I’ve got nothing to root for in 2013, may as well enjoy the Lions lol

  19. The Cowboys ought to be embarrassed. No way you should let anyone drive the field on you in 50 seconds with no timeouts.

Also, the Lions could be amazing if they had a better coach.

  20. Not a cowboys fan, but according to the ones here at the bar, “You don’t kick a field goal!” in that situation.

  21. First my Giants humiliate the “high powered offense” Eagles in Philly, and now this? Greatest football day ever!

  22. How many YEARS is Jerry Jones going to let this nucleus stay together before he blows it up? IT IS NOT GOING TO WORK JERRY. The Romo, Witten, Bryant, Austin, O-Line et al… it isn’t getting it done. Year after year after freakin year. How in the world did this guy succeed to the point of billionaire? He is dense. Utterly, overtly dense… or maybe just arrogant. Sigh…

  23. Wonderful job lions competing for the full 60 minutes. In previous years, 4 turnovers led to some mailed-in peformances.

dear Dez, leadership is getting people to hear your message and accept it. when people are pushing you away, you are not being heard. try another tactic.

  24. I wouldn’t want to be Dez’s momma. There’s gonna be some serious B slappin’ going on if history is any indicator.

  25. Did I hear anything about how pourous the Dallas D was. I mean they left guys wide open all day. Calvin is great but 300 yard great. The rest of the teams Dalls plays probably won’t even try to run, why bother. Just pass.

  26. So Jerry Jones said the player to stop was Reggie Bush and not Calvin Johnson ,,, Bwahahahahahahah !!!! The Recent cowboy collapses are something of epic proportions !!!!

  27. Again, another piss poor time management on the part of the head coach that Jerry so loves. This guy has cost Dallas at least three winable games by not understanding clock management.

  28. To all you Dez haters – listen to the postgame comments after the game by Tony Romo. Dez was not belittling anyone, or being a prima donna wanting the ball. He is an emotional guy and was trying to get his team fired up. Nothing wrong with caring. You can spin it any way you want, but find out the truth before you make up stuff and crucify someone to prove your preconceived point.

  29. While Dez Bryant’s behavior was ridiculous, it’s eerily similar to Terrell Owens. Interesting how they are having the EXACT same problems they were having five years ago when he was let go.

  30. It would have been fun to be a Lions fan at Ford Field for that finish. Everyone in that stadium suddenly became bonded – best friends for life!

Dez Bryant acted like a jerk, but he doesn’t suck as a player. That 50 yard catch and run for a TD was pretty cool. He should spend some time with Megatron in the office season and learn some maturity.

Stafford’s TD … wow! Brilliant. No one saw it coming, not even the other 10 Lions on the field!

As for the Cowboys … when you get 4 turnovers and can’t make the game into a blowout … you deserve to lose!

  31. Just think, Jason Garrett was the hottest name in coaching in 2006 or so. Baltimore actually tussled over whether to hire him or John Harbaugh.

And for those hoping for Gruden, I don’t think Romo could handle his tough coaching. He is kind of mentally fragile as it is. I think Gruden would realize that, and it’s why he won’t take that job.

  32. Good win for the lions. Too bad they celebrate like they won the Super Bowl. Tantrum schwartz throwing down the headset. Take it easy, guys you beat Dallas by 1 after being 3 point favorites at home. Maybe act like you’ve been there bef… Oh right- it’s the lions. Stay classy Detroit.

  33. I have been a Cowboys fan for over 40 years and today is the day that it comes to an end. As long as that egotistical know-nothing maniac Jerry Jones and his retard of a son owns the team, which will be for the rest of my lifetime, I will never watch them again. I sincerely hope they lose every game they play.

  34. That last 1:40 was the worst-coached period of football i have ever see, at any level. If Dallas had taken 3 knees and punted Denver has the ball on their 20 at best with 30 seconds on the clock and not timeouts. At the very least, call timeout after the catch at the 1 yard line. Just appallingly poor coaching.

  35. That play by Matthew was so beyond cool. It was up there with the fake throw down Marino pulled against the Jets one year. I’m sure the NFL will find a way to kill this too through some stupid rule. The game is becoming mindless.

if true, then demarcus ware was holding him back and jason whitten was about to deck him to keep him from firing up his teammates. which would make sense, because we know both those guys are me first guys, while dez is a team guy. and you can spin it however you want, but romeo;s version is laughable. and even funnier was the pregame raving over the more mature and professional dez.

  37. Remember Mr. Smith under the Tim Ryan criteria for All Pro Dez had a more valuable game than Megatron 2 TD’s to 1

No, not angry. It’s funny to see a team act like they won their first game ever. They’re pros and should act like they’ve won a game at home after being down a couple points. Like I said, it’s the lions, so it makes sense. They won’t be relevant in a month anyway.

Maybe you should take a deep breath and put down the crack pipe????

Yep your angry man it was a last second win we are allowed to celebrate get over it. Go Lions!

  42. Statistically, Dez Bryant is much better than Calvin Johnson, and has the same amount of Superbowl rings.

Keep hating on Dez, but anyone can look up the stats and see he’s objectively and impartially better at what he does than CJ. Its not open to interpretation, the numbers are there!

  43. Stafford’s heads up play was brilliant. As for Mr. Jerry Jones, I’d like to offer a quote by Nelson from the Simpsons…. HAH-HAH!!!!!!

To clarify…after the same number of pro games. That said, I wish Dez was more professional like CJ,

At least while I type this, the Broncos put another TD on the Skins making me feel “slightly” better…

Oh yes act like you’ve been there before. Just like Dez does when he scores a touchdown, and not like Megatron when he scores…

  48. You know it is a great week when the Steelers, the Washington franchise, the Cowboys and the Falcons all lose and it is particularly delicious when they lost because of poor QB play.

Romo once again played just good enough to lose. He has made a career out of that.

  49. I have been a Cowboys fan for over 40 years and today is the day that it comes to an end

That 90’s dynasty was one of the best teams ever.

    I hated them.

Gotta take the bad with the good, man.

  50. to the people talking about the stats of both players thru 50 games saying that proves dez is a better overall player: can you name the QB throwing to calvin his first 50 games? because i know for a fact that dez’s first 50 he had a pretty good seasoned tony romo who was already an established QB. stafford was drafted in 09, which would be CJs 3rd year, which he missed most of 09. so thru CJs first 50 games he had qbs such as: jon kitna, dan orlavski, drew stanton, mike mcmahon, dante culpepper, rookie stafford. dez bryant has had 1 qb, tony romo. u think CJ would have had better #s had he had a seasoned matthew stafford his entire first 50 games? yea thats what i thought.

  51. “That 90′s dynasty was one of the best teams ever.

That’s true if you believe your team is going to turn it around sometime in the future. After nearly 20 years of failure and knowing its not going to get better anytime soon its a little different. The Jones/Romo/Garrett era is never going to win anything important.

dave and/or monkeyhate: this is absolutely the stupidest post thus far. even a blind monkey or any human with a 50 IQ could see that calvin johnson is better than dez bryant. i don’t care what fantasy geek stat you trot out. the same stats said randall cunningham and john elway were relative equals, which is ridiculous. while the game is on, are you calculating your fantasy points instead of watching?

  53. Lost in everything in that Dallas game, considering how many BLATANT HOLDING penalties that Tyron Smith gets away with every game (not the “garden variety/holding on every down, but PLAY-CHANGING HOLDING that he does), that his typical blatant hold being called was what made it possible for Detroit to even have the ball back with enough time to drive for a touchdown.

Justice for the teams that have been robbed blind while that guy tackles, undresses and strip searches defensive ends every game and gets away with it.
