On Wednesday, senior NFL execs will listen to Oneida Indian Nation’s concerns

The long-awaited meeting between the NFL and Oneida Indian Nation will occur on Wednesday.  So who will be there, and what will transpire?

According to the NFL, at least two executive Vice Presidents will attend, along with other senior league executives.  It’s not yet known whether Commissioner Roger Goodell will be present.

The league’s goal, per the NFL, will be to listen. Oneida Indian Nation’s goal will be to talk.

They talked about their plans for talking in a statement issued Sunday to PFT.

“We are encouraged that Commissioner Goodell has recently said the league should be listening to critics of the Washington team name,” Oneida Indian Nation said. “As a proud sponsor of the NFL, we want to see the league continue to be a unifying force for the ideals of mutual respect. That’s why we are hopeful that this meeting begins the process of ending the league’s continued promotion of painful racial slur. We plan on presenting the league with several different steps they can take to begin addressing this important issue.”

It’s not known what the suggested steps will be. It’s possible that we’ll all find out after the meeting happens.

It’s currently unlikely that it will make any difference, given that both the NFL and the team have taken the position that the name should not be changed.

NFL execs don’t own the team.

Logicalvoices believes that the NFL tries to screw the Redskins. The rest of us think he’s lost it.

How much you wanna bet that the Oneida nation is getting mucho dinero from some liberal thinktank or the Rainbow Coalition to push this issue?

Media driven outrage. How many years have the Redskins been in existence? And it is only coming up this year?

  7. 2jivecrew says: Oct 27, 2013 7:44 PM

Yeah, we know they’re meeting. You already posted about it. Doing whatever you can to keep the “controversy” alive when most everyone else has moved on to the next flavor of the month topic, eh? Transparent.

In all likelihood, Halbritter will walk out the meeting in frustration at hearing Goodell talk endlessly about wanting a team in London.

Have I yet to hear a legitimate reason to change the name. Every poll, historical fact, etc points to keeping the name. Yet a handful of media are completely obsessed with this…80 years later.

    Audient –

The issue people have with the PC police like you, is that you always categorize the opposition as “mentally ill”, “ignorant”, “racist”, and our opinions are “whims”.

But your stand is noble, informed, tolerant, sensitive, “decent”, and “respectful”.

You act like you are tolerant as you sit up there on that giant pony, but the fact is you can’t even bring yourself to CONSIDER the other side – that the word is not offensive to a very high majority of the people. I’m worry that your white guilt has you fighting this very insignificant battle, but the good thing is, there will always be other battles to fight – eliminating tag during recess, ensuring everyone gets a ribbon, banning season champions from sports, etc etc.

Keep up the good fight. Every time you lose, the country wins

  32. toosano says: Oct 27, 2013 9:48 PM

Just change the name to an actual tribe name like the Apaches, Cherokees or Navajos and watch all of the other teams whine about that, too! Mainly because their team wasn’t chosen . . .

I expect that the forces that are against the name b/c it is offensive will lead by example on this issue and start protesting the tribal high schools that use the nick name for their team moniker.

  40. racistredskins says: Oct 29, 2013 12:46 PM

The NFL controls it’s brands, not Synder. The name WILL change because it’s racist. Let’s go over this again for the teabaggers:

The Red Sox are socks not an ethnic group.
The Dolphins/Cubs are animals not an ethnic group.
The Chiefs/Braves/Warriors are a rank not an ethnic group.
The Redskins/Indians ARE ethnic groups and should be respected as such, not mocked with cartoon/cigar shop images and monikers.

Let’s hope it changes to Washington Rednecks, now more appropriated than ever.
