Beanie Wells tore Achilles while working out for Ravens

The Ravens brought in free agent running back Beanie Wells for a workout last week. But instead of impressing the team and earning a contract, Wells suffered an injury that will prevent him from playing for the Ravens or anyone else this year.

Wells tore his Achilles tendon during the workout, Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports.

A torn Achilles tendon is a significant injury, meaning not only will Wells not play in the NFL this year, but he might be hampered in trying to catch on with another team next offseason. That’s a tough blow.

The Cardinals drafted Wells in the first round in 2009 and cut him this year. He has 625 carries for 2,471 yards and 24 touchdowns in his career.

The Ravens are still looking for help at running back and have also worked out Bernard Scott.

  1. I’m interested in that first question as well. I assume he’s SOL. Doesn’t seem fair, but at the same time if you started paying guys who got hurt in tryouts the potential for abuse would be very tempting for some guys………

  2. I can almost guarantee he will get some sort of compensation. They think of everything, there is no way the NFL and NFLPA dont have a procedure for this exact scenario.

  3. Hope he had some kind of insurance. Heck the doctors should do it for free.

But the “one of our own” mentality only works if you’re on a team or grand standing in a lawsuit.

  4. Why should he be paid? If you break a leg falling down the stairs going to or from a job interview do you think they’d pay you?

  5. Beanie’s failure in the NFL is karma for him giving up on his Buckeye teammates in the national title game against LSU. He had over 100 yards in the first half, and we were winning the game. Beanie refused to take the field in the second half because he knew he was entering the draft. Tressel was asked in the post game presser if he was medically cleared to play in the second half. He said he was.

  6. My 8year old niece has a beautiful hand blown glass unicorn that’s more durable than this guy. Another brilliant first round pick by the Cardinals wasted on a RB made of eggshells, they made a real habit out of it.

Based on their offense so far, he’d rather be on IR than play for the ravens.

Possibly true. Then again, based on their records to date, he would rather be on the Ravens IR than playing for the Steelers.

Yea actually they would. Its under the medical payments portion on their insurance and if you sue them you will almost always be offered a settlement out of court even if they are not liable.

As far as the commenter that thinks he wont have coverage – I bet they reach whats called an “injury settlement.”

The entire Ravens team wished they would have been on IR for the Steelers matchup. Better than taking a pasting.

  10. ravens will get some one.got 2 left with cincy long way to go.lets see whats up at the end.[personaly I could use a break from all this extra cash needed for playoffs]

  11. Given the beating the Ravens RBs have sustained under new “run game coordinator/O-line coach” Juan “The Wide-9” Castillo…Beanie might just have gotten the better end of the deal. (But seriously…what a drag. Here’s to a speedy recovery.)

  12. Working out a walking injury like Wells is what happens when a team is in the vice grip of a contract given to a guy who isn’t coming even close to earning it.

    Last 3 weeks:
    Flacco — 63/100 for 826 yds, 3 TDs, 1 INT
    Dalton — 69/104 for 1034 yds, 11 TDs, 2 INTs

  13. ^^^ little exited that your sub-par qb finally had 3 decent games in a row for the first time in his nfl career buddy? Wait until he does it in games that matter, that is if you’re still alive when he is reincarnated in a thousand years. Dalton will never get it done for the bungals and they’ll be another 1 and done in the playoffs this year.

  14. Indeed..how many playoffs win does Mr. Dalton have…um zero. 0. When your guy wins 9 playoff games and a Super Bowl call me. Actually, call us when he wins 1. Sorry but all Joe does is win.
