Belichick credits Parcells after using the wind to Patriots’ advantage

belichickparcells Getty Images

With the Patriots and Dolphins tied 17-17 late in the third quarter on Sunday, New England coach Bill Belichick took a timeout so that the Patriots could kick a field goal with the wind at their backs, rather than wait until the fourth quarter and kick into the wind. Belichick said it was his old boss Bill Parcells who schooled him on the importance of factoring the wind into his decisions.

“I’d say one of the biggest decisions and most critical decisions that I’ve ever been a part of on that was in the 1986 NFC Championship Game against the Redskins,” Belichick said. “It was a windy day in Giants Stadium. We’ve had many of those and we won the toss and Coach Parcells elected to take the wind which wasn’t very common. It wasn’t a very common decision because, let’s face it, you take it in the first quarter you’re not going to have it in the second quarter. That was what he decided to do and we were able to really take advantage of that situation against the Redskins. We got three stops and 17 points and we had a 17-0 lead at the end of the first quarter in part due to the wind, good defense and good offense helped of course. But the field position was huge and that ended up being the final score of the game. That decision, the initial points and the way that the game started really was a huge part of what was reflected in a huge degree to that decision that Bill made. That was a good lesson for me to learn in my career. It was a great decision by Coach Parcells.”

In the third quarter on Sunday Stephen Gostkowski’s 48-yard field goal with the wind at his back was good, and Belichick said that made it worth giving up a second-half timeout in a close game.

“When the clock was running there, we wanted to try to give ourselves a chance,” Belichick said. “Of course in a close game like that, the game was tied at the time, you hate to waste timeouts because they can be valuable at the end, as we’ve seen many times this year, but I felt like it was worth it to be able to have a better opportunity on the kick. Not saying that Steve couldn’t have made it going the other way, I just think it would have been a harder kick based on the conditions that were out there yesterday.”

The wind was a significant factor for the Patriots in the third quarter, as they went from a 17-3 deficit to a 20-17 lead. Not only did Gostkowski make his 48-yard field goal with the wind at his back, but the Dolphins missed a field goal in the third quarter into the wind. All three of Gostkowski’s kickoffs in the third quarter were touchbacks, while the Dolphins’ kickoff into the wind in the third quarter only reached the 10-yard line. The Patriots also had two punts with the wind in the third quarter and averaged 50.5 yards on them, while the Dolphins’ two punts into the wind in the third quarter averaged 39.5 yards. The wind was a significant advantage, and Belichick was wise to keep the wind at his back as long as he could.

Also, great comparison of Brady vs Manning. Remember that 50TD season Brady had when he had an actual receiving core like Manning has now? Manning is on pace to match his record. This year is a wash for Brady, his receivers have been terrible. I was surprised to see Dobson catch that TD pass, he’s brutal. How the Pats are still 6-2 is beyond me…

  9. bigwii says: Oct 28, 2013 3:59 PM

You’re funny. You must be a troll or something. Brady just broke the record for most playoff wins in the same year Manning tied for most playoff losses. Plus how many records has Brady broken in the playoffs and in the regular season? How many times has Manning choked in the playoffs. Brady has 3 rings to his 1. Brady did it with average to below average receivers he didn’t have Reggie Wayne or Dallas Clark. He won those without Welker, Gronk, Moss.

Also, look at what manning has around him. Pro Bowl receivers like Welker, and future Pro Bowl receivers like Thomas and Decker. While Brady has rookie and below average receivers like Edelman. Gronk, Amendola, and Vereen have been hurt all year. Yet he still won 6 games this year, including against the Saints with a great comeback and great throw to win the game. Not even counting the injuries on defense with Mayo, Talib, and Wilfork.

Yeah Manning is so much better.

Worst decision Art Shell made in 1994, opening monday night game against 49ers was not taking the wind over the ball. 3 and out punt almost went backwards gave 49ers short field and a TD.

oh my bad, I thought QB’s made WR’s not the other way around. So what exactly is the reason why TB is playing like Tim Tebow? is it poor talent around him? can his recievers not catch the ball? can they not get open? what is it? I’ll let you know what I think. TB is throwing alot of balls in the dirt that are thrown way to hard and inaccurate. He’s 32% on third down and takeing alot of SAC’s and Throwing alot of picks. That’s what I’m seeing. When his 1st read isn’t open he looks scared in the pocket and makes poor throws and bad decicions. QB is really easy when you know the Def call pre snap. Alittle tuffer when you have to react post snap. TB has had terrible WR in the past and did fine. STOP BLAMING HIS WR’s AND ADMIT YOUR PRECIOUS TB IS ACUALLY JUST NOT THAT THAT GREAT OF A QB.

Brady had a better completion, QBr than manning.

Brady had about 2400 passing yards to manning’s 2700.

I’ll dumb it down for you so you haters understand.

The rule didn’t come into effect until 2006, it happened before 2006. Therefore what does it matter. Even more all they did was videotape from the field instead of the box. With this thing called zoom what advantage did they really get that would give them this huge advantage? Nothing? Exactly every camera has zoom anyone could have got anything they wanted no matter where they are.

They have the best record and broke a bunch if records since 2006. Including going go 2 Super Bowls. Yeah they’ve really done nothing. Find new material to hate with. Oh, you can’t because there’s none.

Just understand the Pats have been the best team since 2001. Just admit they are the class of the NFL. Why go through all this trouble to hate? Worry about your own team. It just looks bad how jealous you all sound. Have some pride.

    Patriots totals since 2001 : 11, 9, 14, 14, 10, 12, 16, 11, 10, 14, 13, 12, 6* = 152

    Agreed.
And as much as I hated the Polian/Manning/Dungy Colts, I have 0 problem with their turning up the heat in the dome in the 06 AFCC. If the Pats wanted to have that not happen, they could have beat the Colts in the regular season that year and hosted the AFCC. But they didn’t. Too bad Polian didn’t feel the same about the snowy field in Foxboro, but that’s Polian for you.

It’s funny how a lot of people complain on here about how “soft” the game is now but they keep whining about stuff they don’t understand that happened years ago.

When they win without Brady playing well, they say it’s all Belichick (though even then, they attempt to say “he cheats” ignoring the fact that coaches have been filming signals going back beyond George Halas (who did it better than anyone else) – and signal filming continues today (the “scandal” of Spygate was a new 2006 rule that said filming could no longer take place from the sidelines – it continues today, hence that’s why coordinators still cover their mouths.)

Admit it folks – both Brady and Belichick are among the best ever to play or coach the game.

I guess that when the donkeys circumvented the salary cap to keep Terrell Davis and Elway under contract during their Superbowl years that didn’t add any asterix to their titles?

” The penalties imposed on the Denver Broncos for violations of the league’s rules regarding the disclosure of deferred compensation to players and the salary cap were the second sanctions against the team for similar infractions in less than three years.

….the league announced that the Broncos have been fined $950,000 and will lose a third-round selection in next year’s draft for circumventing the salary cap between 1996 and ’98.”

Look THAT up and then tell me again how filming signals from a balcony as shown on national TV and in front of 60 people and stopped before their last two Superbowls and their 16-0 regular season even began is the crime of the century?

Send all future correspondence to the Ravens. They’ll place it inside the Lombardi Trophy that was handed to them last year.

The longer TB plays the more people are starting to see that he’s actually not that good. I’d like to see the Pats get to another SB just do I can enjoy them losing it, but with TB at QB this isn’t going to happen. Unfortunaly he’s going to be 1 of these QB’s that hang around to long. His last play will probably be him getting peeled off the turf and put on a stretcher because he held on too long. That being said Brady should just retire while he’s ahead because all these Tim Tebow numbers are just making him look REALLY BAD and hurting a legacy that he’s already lucky to have at this point. I think this team would be half decent if they’d just let MALLET start already. He’s already twice the QB TB is, and he’s only played in a few preseason games.

Hilarious. Brady has led the 2 highest scoring offenses of all time, with one as recently as last year, and as soon as their is the slightest chink in the armor the haters come rushing to invade it like parasites.

His offense has been completely turned over and yesterday was the first game that Gronk and Amendola played together all year. Meanwhile, other teams like the Ravens and Steelers are experiencing turnover with a combined record of 5-9…but no one cares because they’re not the big bad Patriots who have crushed dreams and souls of thousands over the past decade. Haha. No matter how much you complain on PFT, Brady will wear a gold jacket, Belichick will wear a gold jacket, and the Pats are the Team of the Decade having gone through all of the hater’s teams year after year. Sorry haters. Enjoy the NFL Films slow motion clips of our success over and over again for all of eternity!

    LOL,

    ” BELICHEATANDMCDANIELAREJOKES ”

If they is such jokes, then why did the donks hire McDaniels away from the Pats?

    wow.

Was it because they wanted the league’s worst defense in 2010, allowing a league-worst 471 points (29.4 per game) and 6,253 yards?

“Broncos Spygate II”, google it and then tell me again how shady every other else is…

McDaniels seems to have no trouble winning with the Pats.

We’ll see how 10 more games on Manning’s old ankles holds up in the playoffs.

Why do you think the PATS Cordinators are all Ponds? they don’t even do anything. The pats didn’t even have a OC in 08….hmmmmm……I wonder why? this team is made up of 2 guys BB and Ernie Adams.

The fan of the team that drafted Cutler, then ran him out of town, then Tebow, then ran him out of town, judges the 6th round hall of fame 5-time SB QB drafted by the Pats?

Tom Brady-Gronk(has a stick of an arm), Danny Amendola(about as durable as a piece of paper),Kenbrell Thompkins(has flashes of talent), Aaron Dobson( Don’t even think his mother knows hes playing). Give me a break.

  77. patriotinvasion says: Oct 28, 2013 6:52 PM

The amount of misinformation and lunacy among the hatersphere is beyond mind boggling. How does a team tape another team’s practice thousands of miles away? Don’t even bring up a walkthrough haters because even your Messiah Matt Walsh admitted that Rams walkthrough in front of media members and cheerleaders was never taped.

This is just tin foil hat wearers who think the wizard Illumanti of Belichick and a camera that filmed hand signals in plain view to 70,000 people in the stadium can throw touchdowns, catch passes, intercept balls, force fumbles, kick field goals in snowstorms, return punts for touchdowns, block field goals, and make tackles.

Like I said. No matter how many troll comments you make, it won’t change the fact that the Pats are the Team of the Decade and their QB and head coach will walk in to the Hall of Fame 5 years after they retire and the highlight of their success together will always be replayed in all of their slow motion NFL Films glory. Do you honestly think that real football is Madden & Spygate was basically looking at your buddies side of the screen to see his play? I’m serious, I really think that is the thought process of these fools. Spygate- the most overblown story in the history of football. Oh, just a reminder, the Patriots regular season record since 2007 is 82-20. They’ve had 2 Super Bowl appearances & made the playoffs every year but ’08 when Brady blew his knee out in week 1. Oh, they went 11-5 that year too. With Matt Cassell.

  80. rodneyharrisonstruckstick says: Oct 28, 2013 7:14 PM

Just like your teams, You’ve seen Brady, Belichick, and the New England Patriots destroy your sunday way too many times and cant find any other excuse (aside from blaming your own teams inadequacies, or plain tipping your cap) to except that. When you cry Spygate Its an obvious deflection of your own teams defeated existence in this watered down league. Where 4-5 teams are good any given year.

You are just plain spiteful and jealous that the Patriots are one of those teams Year in Year out, And yours is probably not. Chances are you can only hope to celebrate your super bowl in week4 beating the patriots by a field goal every 4 years or so.

The Patriots have a better record from 07-13 than they did 01-07. That’s Reality, not spygate.

Yes, he’s arrogent when the press asks him dumb questions they know he won’t answer, just to get on the map(hello BBreer). But, when you get him going, it’s fascinating, IMO. This guy is the son of a coach, that started in the NFL, 40 yrs ago, as an intern for the Lions, driving ther cut downs to the airport for gas money. Seen it all, done it all, knows everyone and his anecdotes are priceless. Been to, I think, 8 SBowls.

This yr, with all the Pats injuries, may be his best coaching job.

In one of the Patriot books I read a while back it states that Belichick’s plan was to run a system that would keep a team competitive every year in the salary cap era.

    ______________________________

Yeah BB is an impressive coach, but his plan is not overly impressive. He just took Parcells’ system and ran with it. Build an exceptional O line, have a smart, competent QB who does not make mistakes, don’t waste money on skill position players. Spend instead on a solid, no-nonsense defense, usually of the bend but don’t break variety. Play great special teams to maximize field position.

This is all nothing new. It has resulted in 8 SB trips and 5 SB wins between the two coaches in the past 26 years. The shocking thing is that not many other teams copy the formula. Bizarre.
