Chip Kelly: I would think Michael Vick won’t be able to go

AP

The Eagles saw Michael Vick leave Sunday’s game after aggravating his hamstring injury and Vick is headed for an MRI to see how much damage might have been done when he heard the hamstring pop.

Regardless of what the tests show, coach Chip Kelly isn’t expecting Vick to be part of his quarterback choice this week. If Nick Foles gets cleared after his concussion, Kelly thinks the choice will be between Foles and Matt Barkley against the Raiders in Week Nine.

“Matt is healthy, so that’s a positive,” Kelly said on WIP, via the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I would think Mike would not be ready to go, and it depends on where Nick is. So we’ll know early in the week which two guys we got to prepare for, one and two. Our first day of practice is [Tuesday]. We’ll have a good understanding today. I know Nick will come in today and meet with [trainer] Chris Peduzzi and our doctors, and we’ll have a good understanding of where Nick is this week and what’s his availability.”

Whoever does play quarterback, Kelly made it clear after Sunday’s loss that he expects better play from the position. He acknowledged his own role in the team’s offensive blackout over the last two weeks (one field goal in losses to Dallas and the Giants), but said he thinks that the execution has also been lacking.

“I look up and I see guys are open…If we can’t execute what we need to execute, just getting the ball on people when guys are getting open and giving them a chance to make plays, then I think that becomes real difficult,” Kelly said via NJ.com.

There have been so many problems on offense for the Eagles the last two weeks that you could run out of fingers to point before everyone gets their turn. Getting some consistency at the most important position on the offense would be a good way to turn things around, but it is looking like far from a sure thing that Week Nine will provide the foundation for such a development.

  1. Offensive genius right there. Completely changing the scope of offense in the NFL. He would make the Hall if he retired this week based on his vast influence in The League during his time. Higher on the totem pole than Belichick, Payton, Reid, McCarthy, Coughlin, Harbaugh’s. Way higher. In a class of his own. A living legend, if you will.

  2. even if he gets good draft picks he’ll run them into the ground too trying to make them an explosive offense this is the NFL. go back to college Chip where u might have a chance

  3. At least Matt Barkley is showing that he isn’t a starting caliber QB right away instead of doing the normal USC QB thing and flashing just enough potential to keep him on the roster year in and year out to break your heart.

  4. I have been an Eagle fan for 27 years and I can honestly say this sucks right now, I can’t stand Vick (nothing to do what he has done in the past, football wise), he is fragile and boneheaded and if you can’t read a defense at the age of 33 please take a seat and let’s rebuild and find a face of the franchise at the QB position. I believe Chip is the answer at coach he just needs a QB. Say what you want but Mcnabb was awesome for the franchise and I as a fan appreciate all he did for this franchise while he was here, his PR skills sucked but at least he showed up and made most games fun to watch. Underneath it all I am happy for Andy as well, nice to see him with a fresh start and a good defense for a change.

  5. 6ball: you didn’t see the dallas game then!! 80 yds passing through 3 qtrs!! Then got hit, and concussed, by not throwing the pass away!

move on, qb of ’14 is NOT on the roster!

  6. I don’t understand who makes the decisions on this team. Whoever decided it was OK to start Vick last week should be held accountable. It was obvious he wasn’t ready to go. Barkley should have gotten the first team reps and the start with Vick as the emergency.

  7. as an eagles fan for all of my 27 years, I agree whole heartedly with Salvi18. chip has a lot to learn, but we have a patient owner. let’s get Johnny football or mariota.

  8. Much like every other system ever concieved, if you don’t have a QB or talent, you can go pound sand. Hopefully they can get a QB high next year, but they might have already won too many games…

  9. I knew this would happen. Hamstrings are tricky. They seem well and then, “Boom!” you’re coming up lame. Other than Vick, no one on that squad can run that team like him. hate him if you want Philly fans, he is the best you have.

  10. Remember after 1/2 of one game when everybody thought this Chip guy was the next offensive genius in the NFL??

    Hilarious!

  11. I’ve followed the Ducks for awhile and really like Kelly’s style of play. Get Mariota and you just might own that division . That said this is the NFL and my team’s the Raiders, so I hope you stink it up next week Chip!

  12. Barkley was an odd draft pick for them given he spent college running a conventional pro-style offense. He’s not a dual threat, read-option guy who’d thrive in this offense.

  13. I’ve not joined the chorus the previous several times this has come up, but this time I doubt Vick gets another shot to start. He’s now relegated to clipboard duty for whichever team he ends up on. At least he has 2010 to remember.

  14. I guarantee you the O will be better in Oakland. This team simply does not like the Link. There’s something about the Philly fans that casts a negative mindset on the players.

  15. I love those who want to judge Chip Kelly after a half season. Last time I checked, Jimmy Johnson was 1-15 as his first year as Cowboys coach. (I know, different era, but you still cannot judge a coach who comes into a team that is in transition.)

  16. In order for Chips system to work in the future. He needs to draft 2 quarterbacks, Just in case one goes down, and or change his system to take advantage of the tallent you have. Kelly’s system with Foles under center is a Joke, and do not take of Nicks talents or the other players on the offense.

uhm…yeah, they’re the biggest frontrunners in the country, and this wears thin on the players. After a while, they all turn into ricky waters..for who for what.

But need I digress. When I see Chip Kelly, I have visions of Billy Gilespie running away from reporters in Rupp Arena. This guy is way in over his head and has no idea how to get out of it. I gave him two years, but if this does not turn around quickly, he will be gone after this year.

  18. In order for Chips system to work in the future, he needs to draft two quarterbacks that fits his sytle just in case one goes down. He also needs to consider changing his system to take advantage of the talents he has on his team today. Right now, Kelly’s system with Foles under center is a Joke, and does not take full advantage Nick’s talents or the other players on the offense.

  19. Sure looks like he won’t make it in the pros. The big advantage he had at Oregon was being able to recruit speed at all positions and overload his roster, but in the NFL he just doesn’t have that speed advantage– everyone is fast– and the offense instantly becomes gimmicky.

Hopefully he goes to U of Florida after next season. He will dominate there.

  20. Open Letter to the eagle fans from a Duck for 15+yrs

    Bottom line chip’s offense works.

Chip Kelly’s offense isn’t this constant college gimmick these BS reporters want you to believe. The only thing he is about is the science of athletism and the game. With Andy Reid you had Taco Tuesdays and fast food fridays. From top down from Nutrition and health to stressing the defenses, he is about the science of the sport with constant change to tempo and running an offense that stresses the decision making of the qb

Will the qb hand off, keep it or pass.

His offense does require a smart and athletic QB though. Vick isnt it, athletic, yes, smart hell no… Until you find that you will never win it all and he knows that. 9ers instilling much of the zone read w kappernick (misspell) wonderlic in the 30s. Pete Carroll+Russell Wilson(29) as well Belechick+Brady(33) used to meet with chip and added the tempo aspect of the game.
Guess what Vicks score was. 20. and now at 33 yrs old?

Focus on the positives Eagles. He is a coach that Coaches in positions above him all his career has been picking his brain all the way back to his days at New Hampshire.

Ge him a couple yrs he will get you there.

  21. Vick is done in Philly!!

The Eagles need a young, smart and healthy QB. Imagine CHip if he had Kappernick or Wilson. Maybe Mariota? It takes time to change the philosophy of a team and not for nothing last years draft Had Zero qbs that have panned out. Barkley was the best available for the pick in the round.

    —————————————–

Was all of this happening the year he won the national championship at Oregon….. Oh, Wait.

This guy is a fraud. You cannot do the things he did in college at the pro level. Not enough players to get it done. Just line up and play football. It still works. This spread stuff is garbage.

  23. lmtduck hits it on the head. Chip’s offense is based on the QB attacking the ends and their decision making. Once Vick couldn’t run, all the ends crashed down the running back because they knew the QB was no threat on the outside.

On Sunday, you can see Tuck ignoring Barkley on the outside and immediately penetrating. I think they should have given Barkley a couple keepers just to keep the ends honest, but I guess he fumbled in the pocket anyway, so there’s no win there.

  24. “He acknowledged his own role in the team’s offensive blackout over the last two weeks…but said he thinks that the execution has also been lacking.”

So he’s calling out his players? Good.

This is quite a refreshing change from “ahem…cough…I need to do a better job there. Time’s yours.”

  25. If you’re going to have a name like Youknowimright, at least try and be right every once in awhile.

  26. Hilarious how people indict Chip Kelly after 8 NFL games when the QB play in the 5 losses has been close to record-level horrific.

(insert HOF coach name here) never won with QB play like that either. Time will tell- this is not Kelly’s build yet.

  27. Mike Vick’s skills have been declining for the last 2 years. He is not a “young 33” as far as football mileage goes. Legs are the first thing to go. He will be a fantastic backup for someone for the next few years.
