The Eagles saw Michael Vick leave Sunday’s game after aggravating his hamstring injury and Vick is headed for an MRI to see how much damage might have been done when he heard the hamstring pop.
Regardless of what the tests show, coach Chip Kelly isn’t expecting Vick to be part of his quarterback choice this week. If Nick Foles gets cleared after his concussion, Kelly thinks the choice will be between Foles and Matt Barkley against the Raiders in Week Nine.
“Matt is healthy, so that’s a positive,” Kelly said on WIP, via the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I would think Mike would not be ready to go, and it depends on where Nick is. So we’ll know early in the week which two guys we got to prepare for, one and two. Our first day of practice is [Tuesday]. We’ll have a good understanding today. I know Nick will come in today and meet with [trainer] Chris Peduzzi and our doctors, and we’ll have a good understanding of where Nick is this week and what’s his availability.”
Whoever does play quarterback, Kelly made it clear after Sunday’s loss that he expects better play from the position. He acknowledged his own role in the team’s offensive blackout over the last two weeks (one field goal in losses to Dallas and the Giants), but said he thinks that the execution has also been lacking.
“I look up and I see guys are open...If we can’t execute what we need to execute, just getting the ball on people when guys are getting open and giving them a chance to make plays, then I think that becomes real difficult,” Kelly said via NJ.com.
There have been so many problems on offense for the Eagles the last two weeks that you could run out of fingers to point before everyone gets their turn. Getting some consistency at the most important position on the offense would be a good way to turn things around, but it is looking like far from a sure thing that Week Nine will provide the foundation for such a development.
