The Broncos came storming back for a win in the fourth quarter against Washington on Sunday without the services of tight end Julius Thomas, who left the game with an ankle injury early in the second half.

Thomas tweeted late Sunday night that he would have more of an idea about the severity of the injury on Monday and Vic Lombardi of CBS4 in Denver reports that he’ll undergo an MRI to make that determination.

Thomas’ breakout this season has come in large part because the last two season have been almost completely ruined by ankle injuries, so anything in that area is sure to be of serious concern to the Broncos. The timing of the bye week works in their favor if it turns out to be a minor problem, but it won’t mean all that much if Thomas is going to be sidelined for a long stretch.

Through eight games, Thomas has caught 39 passes for 451 yards and eight touchdowns. The fireworks late on Sunday prove that the Broncos can score without him, but one imagines they’d prefer not to even try.
