Keenum starts again, and Schaub is fine (unless he isn’t)

Keenum

Even on a bye, the suddenly dysfunctional Houston Texans find a way to have a little (dys)fun.

When last we heard from coach Gary Kubiak, he said that Matt Schaub is still the starting quarterback, notwithstanding the strong Week Seven debut from Case Keenum. Now, Kubiak says that Keenum will start on Sunday against the Colts.

Via Tania Ganguli of ESPN.com, Kubiak said that Keenum will start even though Schaub is “fine,” two weeks after injuring his ankle against the Rams.

So while Schaub may be the starter, Keenum will be starting.

And if you’re not already thoroughly confused, consider this. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Schaub isn’t fine. Per Rapoport, Schaub has torn ligaments in his ankle, and he’ll try to play through the condition.

Of course, before he can play through the “torn ligaments” in his ankle (which technically encompasses any sprained ankle with bruising), Schaub has to play. He apparently won’t play unless and until Keenum doesn’t play well.

Regardless of the words used to get there, it makes sense for the Texans and for Kubiak for Keenum to play. Keenum could turn around a team that could still become a factor in the sixth-seed scrum in the AFC. And if the Texans don’t make it to the postseason, Keenum could do enough the rest of the way to persuade owner Bob McNair to give Kubiak and Keenum a chance to get it done when starting not from 2-4 but from 0-0.
