No Week Nine quarterback decision for Vikings yet

Green Bay Packers v Minnesota Vikings Getty Images

The Vikings went down to their sixth defeat in seven games with Christian Ponder leading the offense against the Packers on Sunday night, but they’re not sure who will be trying to get their second win when they travel to Dallas next Sunday.

Coach Leslie Frazier said Monday that he would take a couple of days to ruminate on things before deciding about who will get the start in Week Nine. The only thing we know for sure is that it will not be Matt Cassel, who started Minnesota’s only victory of the season, returning to the lineup as Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Frazier said Ponder and Josh Freeman are the only two players under consideration.

Freeman has been cleared after suffering a concussion in his Vikings debut last Monday night against the Giants, so the Vikings aren’t waiting for a green light on that front before going ahead with their choice. It’s hard to imagine why Freeman is in Minnesota if not to replace Ponder, especially since Ponder failed to impress against the Packers beyond not turning the ball over.

First time watching a full game of the Vikes all season, but i am sorry to say the problem may not entirely be on the QB, that D is garbage.. oh boy. They couldnt stop anything. I mean the Pack went for it on almost ever 4th down attempt, that just shows that hey your D is garbage.

  2. davikes says: Oct 28, 2013 2:15 PM

The Vikes will be drafting a QB for sure. It won’t be Frazier. The only question is will it be Spielman, or will he be gone too?

Might as well name Joe Webb to start. That would give everyone a chance over the last 4 weeks.

Al Michaels was disgusted with how often he had to mention that the Packers were owning the Vikings on 3rd and 4th. He actually mentioned that he doesn’t want to read that stat any more.

Vikings defense should be the topic of this conversation for sure. Yeah, there QBs can’t get anything going. But, if you defense can’t STOP anything then you NEED a Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady. You don’t need a franchise quarterback.. You need a hall of famer at that point!

  7. bobzilla1001 says: Oct 28, 2013 2:24 PM

To beat the Packers, all the Vikings needed was a QB who could generate 46 points. I mean, how difficult is that?
This “all the Vikings need is a QB” debate laughable.

  8. chawk12thman says: Oct 28, 2013 2:27 PM

A good defense would help more than changing the QB from what I saw.

  9. jasonatomic says: Oct 28, 2013 2:28 PM

It’ll be interesting to see what sort of fake injury Speilman and Frazier invent to explain the benching of Ponder this week.

My money is on blood loss from getting eye-stabbed by Greg Jennings.

  10. abqpacker says: Oct 28, 2013 2:29 PM

  11. earlcampbellrules says: Oct 28, 2013 2:31 PM

The Vikes would be better off not playing a QB and just snapping it to Peterson in the wildcat. If Peterson does need to throw here and there, I’m sure he throws a much better ball than Ponder does anyway.

This makes me wonder if Frazier has been given any private assurances about his job security by Spielman. Frazier has to know that Cassel gives him the best chance to win now, and he shouldn’t care about finding the QB of the future because he isn’t going to be part of the future if he doesn’t win now. Could Frazier get another year, obviously with the stipulation that both coordinators would be replaced, if he starts the guy Spielman wants to evaluate?

Have the viking on motorcycle chase them- have Jared Allen try to lasso them.

After one them crosses the finish line, he takes off the sausage head and the crowd roars no matter who it is. Frazier can give them a trophy. Have some fun with it!

Horrible franchise. Even when the Vikes have the best team in the league they can’t win. This season will be historically bad—should be fun!

  19. canadianvikingfaniii says: Oct 28, 2013 2:47 PM

We know the defence is really bad, so here are some other things…

They need to re-evaluate the offensive line too. Am I the only one who still cannot believe they gave Phil Loadholt that contract extension?

The whole offensive line has been atrocious for run blocking. I have never seen AP hit in the backfield and tackled before he even gets to the line of scrimmage as many times as I’ve seen it this year. AP can blame himself all he wants, but running behind that line is near impossible.

Another issue I have is the coaching. When your offensive coordinator has a playcard the size of a postcard, there is something really wrong. When teams know that when Cordarrell Patterson is on the field it is going to be a simple bubble screen, you know there is a problem. I don’t understand Musgraves reasoning, but having the same 6 plays for each game isn’t going to make things competitive.

Fraiser needs to go, great guy, obviously well liked as a person, but he needs to take charge of his team and show emotion and passion on the sideline. He doesn’t get after his players or praise them during game time. Same dull, expressionless face every Sunday. Fire up your team, chew them out, something!

It is amazing that there is even one team (Jaguars) that are worse than the Vikings, but heck, I’m sure the Jags could beat the Vikes.

Mark Dayton just announced that Freeman will be the starter by executive order. It’s very important to make sure that Minnesota is viewed as a multicultural, advanced society, and this is the only way anyone notices Minnesota.

He, as well as Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar, would also like to point out that they don’t condone the behavior of Packer fans at the dome yesterday. They appeared to be drinking , laughing, having fun, and none of them had their jersey tucked into their ultra cool Girbaud jeans. This is unacceptable behavior, as it shows no sophistication or snobbery whatsoever.

I’m a Packer fan, but the Vikes D really misses their 2 safeties. Harrison Smith is the type of guy who covers up some of the defensive deficiencies. He can take on a runner who is about to hit the second level, and make up for bad coverage with help. When you lose a guy like him, you are going to have some issues.

I don’t think so. I think Leslie and his staff are gone no matter what. The only reason Spielman doesn’t get canned is that the Wilfs don’t want to take the time to find a new GM and completely overhaul the coaching staff. Not with a new stadium to build. They’ll tell Rick to go get a new coaching staff and turn the franchise around or be fired. So, I think we’re stuck with this for the next 3-5 years. Unless Gruden comes in to save the day….unfortunately, we’ll probably need the #1 overall pick to make that happen.

  43. markj71 says: Oct 28, 2013 3:53 PM

YES the defense sucks- but if the offense could sustain a drive they wouldn’t be on the field for most of the game.
We GET IT that not all coaches are fiery guys- but to compare Frazier to Landry, Grant & Dungy is ridiculous-they were proven winners. The Vikings as a team lack enthusiasm while playing- that falls on the coach. I have been to the home games this year- they seem flat every week. We don’t need a spaz as a coach but we need someone who can motivate better than Frazier has done to this point.
We made the playoffs last year on the back of a running back who had an epic season. We also lost Winfield who was the quarterback of that defense.
We NEED to continue to lose to create the change that is necessary- no more band-aids, it’s time to clean house starting with Spielman.

  47. jimthebuilder27 says: Oct 28, 2013 4:10 PM

The problem is not their QB. The problem is their defense. Packers converted 3rd downs easily and even 4th downs. They had no respect for the Vikings D and they were probably laughing on the sidelines and in the locker room, even the flight home!

  48. 2ruefan says: Oct 28, 2013 4:19 PM

And the other thing not mentioned is that the run defense actually played pretty well. Other than the one TD run, they held the Packer running game under control.
They just have ABSOLUTELY no Secondary at all. The Packer offense just executed every PASS at will. Every time the D-line and Linebackers stopped the run for a 3rd and short or 4th and Short – the Pack converted via a pass EASILY.

And BTW, it was not an insult to the Offense as some have suggested. That’s an insult to the defense. As in, we can move the ball at will, no reason to worry we’ll be stopped on 4th down.

  49. purpleguy says: Oct 28, 2013 4:26 PM

Again, we knew the QBs were going to suck this year — we didn’t expect the D to be this bad. As a result, all this manufactured QB controversy malarkey is really secondary.

And it’s good to see the cheesers posting on this article are capable of winning with class (now where is that sarcasm font).

  50. davikes says: Oct 28, 2013 4:30 PM

Another reason to fire Frazier – the DC and OC are incompetent. The Pack has one receiver to double cover last night – Jordy Nelson. Not only don’t they double him, they have Josh Robinson covering half the time. I never once saw Nelson bumped off the line. On the long TD they blitzed a corner and left Nelson covered by a linebacker. Unbelievable.

  52. fwippel says: Oct 28, 2013 4:41 PM

Maybe the Vikings should consider adjusting the defense before worrying about who the QB is.

For starters, they might want to consider either benching Josh Robinson, or moving him to free safety with Harrison Smith out. Yeah, the guy is fast, but he can’t cover man-to-man to save his life.

I don’t think the Vikings have a franchise QB on their roster, regardless of who you pick. But, Freeman has at least looked like he might have potential in previous seasons, so it makes sense to give him a try. But, with how bad the OL is playing this season, how can you get any kind of read on any of the QBs? When the defense is in the backfield immediately every other play either hitting AP or hurrying any of the QBs, how can you evaluate any offense?

Also, as others have mentioned, the defense is playing terrible. Winfield was the only CB in the last 10 years or more that could even be called decent or better. You need at least 2, and really 3, competent CBs to be able to compete in the NFL.

This CRAP Tampa D has to get put to sleep. Too many soft spots for the opposition to get easy 3-5 yard plays with our dbacks out in left field! Thus our 3rd down nightmares. Get a good LB,another CB. Add a couple linemen. Some will call me nuts, but I have been watching Johnny Football every game. He CAN be ours. He can make all the throws,is very elusive and has b@lls the size of Favre. They may well stink, but have we seen their best or just the worst of the most horrible DC in the entire league.

Regarding Packer Trolls: The thing is Packer fans

    NEED

absolutely everyone to approve of their team.

    Why?
    Good question.

All I can tell you is if you live in WI and aren’t a Packer fan, you will defy Packer fans’ comprehension and challenge their imaginations.
You might as well tell them a cow’s primary function is not being tipped.

    ##############

I actually live in Green Bay and the Packer fans live up to the nicknames of “Rubes.”

What’s interesting is when the Packers win, everyone is happy. But, when they lose, the whole town skulks around and most people pout. It’s beautiful, especially because we all know they will have a good regular season record, then get embarrassed in the playoffs again. We all know it’s coming again this year.

There are many people who advertise on their cars that they are “owners.” They might as well put a bumper sticker on there that says “Rube.”

It’s a good thing I have all 3 of them on my FFL roster. Can you believe they were all available? Jennings too.

Why don’t they just ask Greg Jenning’s sister? She seems to have an opinion about everything else.

After hearing from the Viking trolls all spring about how this was the season that Noodle Arm Ponder would finally shine, it is amazing how wrong the Viking trolls really were. Ponder is terrible, Freeman is a hot mess and Cassel is a career back up, how hard could the decision really be?

It’s ok, Vikes. Maybe next time?

Well the Dome was a total disaster, so why shouldn’t the last season there be as well.

Fix the helmets, they don’t match. And fire everyone, the can’t coach.

We have no starting quarterback, but we also have NO middle linebacker! Erin Henderson can’t call or recognize anything the offense is doing to save his life or help the rest of the idiots on D outside of Robison. 1-15. There is not a game left on the schedule we can win. We have no quarterback on offense or defense.

Bye #69, Bye #93. Shoulda coulda but didn’t get that ring in ’09.

Blow it all up right now trade everyone and anyone you can this team is worthless.

Viking fans quit on their team at the first sign of trouble. It says a lot about their lack of character.

No week 9 QB decision…Give Lynn Dickey a call

  75. pootytang66 says: Oct 30, 2013 3:03 AM

Fire everyone then bring in Bill Parcells or Bill Polian as GM and then maybe they can decide who will be starting at QB.
