Rey Maualuga suffers concussion, MCL sprain

Bengals middle linebacker Rey Maualuga is expected to miss about a month after suffering a pair of injuries on Sunday.

Maualuga, who was carted off the field during Sunday’s win over the Jets, suffered a sprained MCL that will sideline him for three or four weeks, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Maualuga also suffered a concussion on Sunday, but it sounds like he’s expected to be cleared to return from the concussion sooner than he’ll be cleared to return from the knee injury.

That’s not good news for the Bengals, who have had Maualuga in the starting lineup every week for each of the last two seasons. But it’s actually better news than most people who saw him go down during Sunday’s game would have expected.

The Bengals will be without Maualuga on Thursday night against the Dolphins and will likely be without him for back-to-back division games against the Ravens and Browns as well. After that the Bengals have their bye week, and Maualuga’s return would seem likely on December 1 against the Chargers.

  1. In all honesty we’ve needed to look at our Maulauga replacement for 2 years now. It’s a shame both of our USC busts (whatup Taylor Mays) got hurt in the same game but bottom line it’s going to be nice not to yell at Rey for missing tackles and assignments for the next 4 weeks.

  2. Bengals are doing pretty good this year. As a Ravens fan, I’m especially interested to see if it’ll carry over to the post-season though,.

  3. If you saw the game you know that was a very scary injury – he appeared to be out cold after absorbing collision with Ivory and was totally limp while still suspended between several players on the line of scrimmage. Hard to believe the concussion was the lesser of the 2 injuries – hope the Bengals make sure he is truly recovered before he plays again.

  4. jetsfan…. Fortunately (unfortunately) Rey won’t be pushed back in for a while… giving him 6-8 weeks to recover.

  5. Rey has played much better now that the Bengals have better safety help (Iloka).

Of course…. the Rey haters won’t admit that Rey has played solid, mistake-free football this season.

  6. ….Karma for being on hard knocks

I’m glad to see all the thumbs down to this (whatever that’s worth). I don’t get the Hardknocks hate. I love the show and think it’s awesome to see inside teams facilities and get to see a little of no name players personalities. Seriously, in the day and age of Kardashians and whatnot, people hate Hardknocks? COME ON MAN

  7. He’s not even in the top 10 in terms of his importance to this Bengals team. He’s nothing more than an over-paid role player. He’s out of position an alarming amount of the time. Not a Cincy fan, but I’m guessing the Bengals will not miss a beat without him.

  8. Rey has played better this year without a doubt and will be missed on a short week. Mays has also improved his play. So stop watching last years games and give these 2 USC “busts” a little credit.

  9. @gatornevabeenaboutdat according to espn rey has 51 tackles compared to Patrick Willis who has 42. Rey is a good player it just sucks that he is hurt. Fight on rey!!!
