Steelers cut Zoltan Mesko, sign Mat McBriar

The Steelers have made yet another change.

This one’s not nearly as dramatic as some of the others, as the team announced they had waived punter Zoltan Mesko, and replaced him with veteran Mat McBriar.

The Steelers signed Mesko on Sept. 2 after the Patriots cut him, but coach Mike Tomlin pointed to his inconsistency (and having one blocked Sunday at Oakland couldn’t have helped).

“The punting has been very similar to how it’s been the previous weeks and really how I kind of characterize it, he’s had his moments, positively and negatively,” Tomlin said in quotes distributed by the team. “He’s been inconsistent and that’s not good enough. He needs to perform better.

“But along with the obvious negativity in the game, I thought he rebounded well and really finished the game strong with some quality punts, particularly a couple that were downed, one was downed inside the one or two-yard line. It was a leg-up in the waning moments of the game as we tried to work our way back into it.”

McBriar was last with the Eagles, and spent eight years with the Cowboys.

Now we are making some drastic moves. Watch out NE 😦

No surprise here. Mesko was a popular player in New England (he does a LOT of charity work), but he was not a very good punter.

Mike Tomlin doesn’ have a lot to work with, the roster has eroded. I don’t like how he’s bailing himself out by putting down players publicly. He doesn’t know how to handle this situation with the media.

    Zoltan Mesko?

Interesting. I always thought a player must have had access to the playbook (either offense or defense) of his former team in order to be a source of information about an opponent. But maybe the Steelers are angling for advantage from rare inside info about the upcoming opponent’s special teams.

This is a prime example of what happens when you try and placate the media Coach….

The move was made now because they figure the Pats know his weaknesses and would take advantage. He was actually pretty solid as a rookie but fell off from there.

  40. bobzilla1001 says: Oct 29, 2013 8:17 PM

Tomlin made those comments about Mesko at his weekly presser on Tuesday. While Tomlin was critical of Mesko, he gave zero indication that he would be released.
But changing punters is nothing out of norm for Tomlin, who once upon a time wasted a fourth-round draft pick on a punter, who punted so much for Bruce Arians’ powerhouse offense, he wound up requiring two surgeries.

  41. youcallthatreporting says: Oct 29, 2013 8:30 PM

Wow. No snarky comment required. This one just speaks for itself…ok maybe one snarky comment:

How about you fix the rest of the team so you don’t have to punt so much!!!!

  42. cannonballdookie says: Oct 29, 2013 8:54 PM

They only signed him because of the novelty of his name and how it went with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and now that their season is over, no point in keeping around a mediocre punter.

  47. olcap says: Oct 30, 2013 10:57 AM

I guess Mike Tomlin’s giant brain couldn’t tell that he was inconsistent before signing him, huh?

  48. CKL says: Oct 30, 2013 12:29 PM

I’ve never thought Tomlin was a good hire and it’s nice to see that more Steelers fans are able to criticize the guy. People HATE BB but he wouldn’t even dream of downtalking a player to the media. No coach should. It’s bush league. The defense slips just a tiny bit and Tomlin can’t right the ship. I’ve always said let’s see how he does as a HC once LeBeau retires. That will be the true test of how good he is.

One thing is for sure, any Steelers fans who doesn’t like the guy probably has a long long loooooonnnnnnggggg wait until they get another HC.

As aPats fan I admit that I thouhgt BB kept Allen over Mesko mainly for financial reasons (the performances didn’t merit paying Mesko so much over Allen, I mean). But it loooks like BB was right all along. Imagine that, he knows more thana fan. 😀

It’s a shame though because Mesko is a good dude. He will be one player who may make more money outside the NFL than inside. He’s a brilliant guy.
