Jeff Tuel and Matt Flynn split starter reps in practice

The Bills practiced Wednesday without banged-up starter-of-the-week Thad Lewis, and that has created yet another mystery quarterback situation.

According to Mike Rodak of ESPN.com, both Jeff Tuel and Matt Flynn took snaps with the Bills starters in practice, and they’re not sure if Lewis will be available this week because of sore ribs.

Tuel said coach Doug Marrone told the quarterbacks today that “it could be anybody” in reference to who starts Sunday against the Chiefs.

That might be the most true statement ever, as the Bills continue to await the return of rookie E.J. Manuel, and wonder how they got into this revolving door to begin with.

UPDATE 1:54 P.M. ET: Marrone told reporters that Manuel definitely wouldn’t play this week, and that Lewis was “50-50” to play, which means they’ll probably list him as questionable.

  1. I bet Lewis starts. I’m curious how Flynn would do in the Bills system. I see a lot of good in Tuel and wouldn’t be too worried if he got enough snaps with the starters this week.

  2. What a shame. If this team had a good qb, they’d be a legit contender. Strength and depth everywhere on the roster, except under center.

  3. Could be worse Bills fans, at least Manuel will be back eventually. Minnesota Vikings fans have nothing to look forward to at the position but the draft.

    ……………………………….
They have one, his name is EJ Manuel. With reps and time he’ll be a good QB. I agree with your sentiment but I think the word good should be changed to healthy.

  5. Matt Flynn may show some signs of being a capable quarterback in the NFL. Don’t believe it. It’s all a rouse.

He has tennis elbow and a strong desire to get paid for growing bad mustaches (as opposed to being paid to win football games).

As hanspard suggested, I also hope he has a great game, just to see how the Bills respond.

    Kick him to the curb!

  6. Matt Flynn is a good QB, he just hasn’t found an offensive system that plays to his strengths. He’s a pocket passer, who doesn’t do well when he’s running for his life!

  7. Flynn can’t win a job during practice….? What is his problem? No real leadership? Hurt all the time? At some point, he will not be given a chance to compete even for the #2 QB spot.

    Such promise…Such disappointment……
