Report: Jonathan Martin “gone AWOL” from Dolphins

Dolphins starting right tackle Jonathan Martin has walked out on the team.

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports that Martin has “gone AWOL from the team the last couple days.”

Glazer said Martin had an incident in the team cafeteria this week in which teammates jokingly said they wouldn’t sit with him, and that Martin’s reaction to the joke was that he “flipped out, smashed a food tray on the ground, took off, and they haven’t seen him since.”

The Dolphins have listed Martin as doubtful for Thursday night’s game against the Bengals with an “illness” but have refused to divulge anything else about his status. Glazer also reported that Martin has gone into a treatment facility, but it is not clear what type of treatment Martin is receiving. Glazer said rumors that Martin had a confrontation with Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman are incorrect.

Asked about Martin’s absence from practice today, Dolphins coach Joe Philbin told reporters that he would only discuss the players who practiced with the team today. Martin did not practice with the team today, and may not be with the team any time soon.

If he has checked in for treatment, good for him.
I am sure there will be plenty of jokes and ridicule here, but it sounds like the young man was pushed by stress beyond his ability to adjust.

Can’t wait for the Miami @ Tampa week – think every player should be dressed like clowns for when the circus gets together

Are the Dolphins the AFC’s version of the Cowboys?

  10. ghjjf says: Oct 30, 2013 6:33 PM

Have you been following the Dolphins this season? With all the times Tannehill has been sacked, I think it’s safe to say that Martin has been AWOL all season.

  11. ottawabrave91 says: Oct 30, 2013 6:34 PM

I’ve said it before and I say it again. the fins messed up by not trading for Brandon Albert. he is,playing well this season too. but they refused to give fair draft picks compensation

  12. phinland says: Oct 30, 2013 6:40 PM

I’m ready for this Dolphins season to be over and for Ross to clean house, starting from Ireland all the way down to the entire coaching staff.

  13. securb2013 says: Oct 30, 2013 6:43 PM

I am not digging the Ireland/Philbin era so far. Can we blow this up and get Chucky?

    very strange.

Let him grow. He’s playing in the NFL

  16. illiniftw says: Oct 30, 2013 6:48 PM

Must suck to be on a team if you hate your teammates. Can’t just quit that team for another with a better environment. A toxic work environment can make even your dream job a nightmare

  17. tile84 says: Oct 30, 2013 6:57 PM

i swear man, jeff ireland has got to go

  18. jax9113 says: Oct 30, 2013 7:10 PM

How are some of you blaming this on Jeff Ireland? How is he involved at all in this? Martin played really well at RT last year, didn’t cut it at LT this year so we moved him back when we got McKinnie. He’s never had any issues before. It just sounds like it got to the point where he felt he wasn’t appreciated and that his teammates didn’t respect him, which sucks for him. I hope he gets the help he needs to move on.

  19. tothefellowshipofthemiserable says: Oct 30, 2013 7:18 PM

Chucky won’t be signing with Miami. Fastest way too set yourself up for failure is take a head coaching job in the AFC East. Some guys named Brady and Belichick is not a career enhancer.

  20. 2dmo4 says: Oct 30, 2013 7:22 PM

Is he in Mexico like Barret Robbins was back in the day?

  21. pettytom says: Oct 30, 2013 7:34 PM

To the idiot saying Drew Brees needs an explanation, get a life! In case you didn’t notice this article has absolutely zero, ZERO to do with Brees. Now that that is out of the way. This can’t be the first/only case of this. Something has had to been building up to make him flip out. Hopefully his teammates take at long look at this and realize that not all people handle criticism the same way.

  22. getitrightflorio says: Oct 30, 2013 7:36 PM

LOL the dolphins. What a circus in Miami. Ireland is the lead clown. Good thing they let Long and bush walk.

  23. scastagnoli1 says: Oct 30, 2013 7:51 PM

The Dolphins had the opportunity to trade for B. Albert who is having a solid year, but they tried to low-ball the Chiefs by offering a third round pick instead of a two. This wasn’t a savvy decision because Martin was viewed as a better right tackle by most observers.

Now he is apparently unable to play at all for the foreseeable future.

  24. dolphins512 says: Oct 30, 2013 8:06 PM

The article says that Martin has entered some type of “treatment facility”. Not sure what that is about, but it sounds like whatever issue is at play here might be more than just getting ticked off in the cafeteria. I certainly hope he gets it worked out.

So tomorrow night, we will have McKennie at left tackle and Clabo back at right tackle. Clabo has been terrible this year….I think it is time to give Nate Garner a shot.

The jokes should probably stop when you’ve lost four in a row.

Probably a very frustrating month for the guy, hope he gets better… we need em!

I guarantee you that loser Richie Incognito is somehow connected to this.

  38. raiders4life says: Oct 31, 2013 9:55 AM

Roger Goodell will soon be enacting an Anti-Bullying initiative based on what occurred in the Miami Dolphins cafeteria.

After the Fins beat the Bengals by 2 TDs, they start their playoff run.
