David Nelson fined for unnecessary roughness penalty

New York Jets receiver David Nelson constantly drew the ire of cornerback Adam Jones during last week’s 49-9 victory for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Jones became enraged over several blocks Nelson placed on him during the game. Jones said he deserved a fine for each one of the plays he believed were cheap shots. While Jones may not get his entire request fulfilled, the league has responded with a fine for Nelson.

According to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com, Nelson said Thursday he had been fined by the league for the unnecessary roughness penalty called against him on Sunday. Nelson wouldn’t disclose the amount he had been fined but said he would appeal the play.

On the play he drew the penalty, Nelson lowered a shoulder into Jones as they ran toward a running play. Jones jumped up and got in Nelson’s face and had to be separated after the play.

Nelson believes he will win the appeal because he believes he can prove the block was legal, happened before the whistle and was close enough to the play.
