Lurie says finding franchise quarterback is Eagles’ No. 1 priority

Eagles Broncos Football AP

A day after Eagles coach Chip Kelly said he’s not thinking about who will be the team’s quarterback next year, the guy who signs the checks said he is.

“We need someone to step up, whether it’s an existing young quarterback or somebody we go out and acquire,” Jeffrey Lurie told Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com.  “We know — this is no secret — quarterback is the [ultimate] position and the most important difference-maker.”

The clear import of Lurie’s remarks?  The not young quarterback on the roster, Mike Vick, won’t be back.

“We want to have very healthy, high ability at that position, with excellent leadership and a lot of smarts and a lot of moxie.  Someone that really can take that position and run with it,” Lurie said.

Again, not Mike Vick.

Lurie also suggested the Foles will have an extended chance to show that he can be the guy.

“And so Nick is going to have a great opportunity to showcase what he’s done. He’s had some outstanding games and he’s had one poor game,” Lurie said.  “Time will tell. I think it’s really wide open for those that are on the team and it’s wide open for what our strategy might be if we don’t have it.  But it’s a No. 1 priority.  We’ve got to solidify that position in a really good way.”

In that last part, Lurie necessarily opened the door for every quarterback currently on the roster, including Vick.  But the balance of Lurie’s comments made clear that Vick won’t return for sixth season with the team — and that the Eagles will be looking, presumably in the draft, for the next Donovan McNabb.

At 3-5 and fading fast, they may be in a prime position to find him.

How come you didn’t need that to start this year then? Or why did you think you had that?

QB or no QB, your #1 priority should be to win the Super Bowl, and lately it has been looking like you are awfully confused as to how to manage your QB roster. So I think you need to do some more deep philosophical thinking about what it means to be a franchise QB and try to make some progress on that issue before you start making other haphazard QB transactions (as well as ignoring all trade transactions) that don’t make sense.

McNabb should never have been forced out in Philly. As bad as he was he was still the better option vs. Vick and Kolb. He was much maligned and got a really raw deal in Philly.

  13. casualcommenter says: Oct 31, 2013 7:32 PM

If Vick could stay healthy, he’d be a good fit for the offense they’re running.

Unfortunately, the overwhelming trend of his career is he can’t stay healthy. Period. He comes in during the offseason, saying “This is the year I stay healthy,” then he’s injured by week 6.

That issue won’t get better as he gets older. Time to move on.

Sure-thing, super-star draft pick QBs come along about every fifteen years or so. John Elway, Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck. The rest? It’s a crapshoot. Good “luck” with your strategy. Maybe you’ll get the next Blaine Gabbert.

I think it’s foolish to determine this early that Foles and Barkley stink. Barkley played 6 quarters and Foles has 8 starts. I’m in no way comparing Foles to legends like Manning, but Manning threw 28 pics his rookie year and won 3 games. Foles only looked bad in one game so far.

Vince Young is still available. Eagles… its time to reunite the missing piece to the “dream team.”

  31. somekat says: Oct 31, 2013 8:21 PM

Everyone knew this was Vick’s last year here. He took a 1 year deal because he couldn’t get better anywhere else

Besides that, I don’t think he said anything else that wasn’t obvious. There’s not a team in the league who doesn’t want to find a franchise QB, or if they have one, keep them healthy and happy. Teams that are outstanding overall, and a “game manager” qb winning titles are the exception, not the rule.

This has always been true in the NFL. It is exponentially more important in today’s “don’t hit the offensive player hard” era with offenses running up and down the field.

Personally, I think Foles has a shot to be good enough (not a top 5 guy, but a guy good enough with a solid team around him, like Flocco ish). I just dont’ see the arm in Barkley. Vick is what he is, great between the 20′s, horrible inside them, and injury prone. Most likely, the Eagles starting QB for 2015 is not on the roster (I could see Foles keeping the seat warm for a rookie next year, so I won’t say 2014)

  32. schmedley69 says: Oct 31, 2013 8:21 PM

We thought that Vick would be gone last year when he was benched in the second half of the season, but for some inexplicable reason, they brought him back for yet another year of injuries, turnovers and underachievement. Vick has set the franchise back 5 years. Andy Reid’s decision making in the latter years of his Eagles tenure was horrible. Kolb, Vick, Foles. None of them were the answer at QB.

  37. yourmomsnewfriend says: Oct 31, 2013 8:35 PM

He’s going to be busy. Besides looking to draft a real QB, he’s also going to need to get a real NFL head coach.

  38. steves11 says: Oct 31, 2013 8:37 PM

If Chip wants Mariotta that badly, the Eagles will do whatever it takes to trade up to get in position to draft him. The question is…whether he’s really good enough to be worth what they’ll have to give up, which will be enormous.

  39. thegreatgabbert says: Oct 31, 2013 8:37 PM

Jeff went on to say that the franchise QB the team is looking for would be 15 years old, currently, so that he has a good 25 years to look forward to (injury free of course) in the league. He will also disdain being paid for his efforts, citing “love of the game”, and reside at a monastery during the off season. The scouts are working on it.

As far as Franchise Qb The Offense def. is better with Vick& not just bc his mobility but his ability to take his shots throwing the deep ball, but his Health is a HUGE problem.Qbs can’t miss 6-8 games a year n be a consistent contender, even missing 1-2 games is 1 or 2 wins you might need to win the NFC East, let alone 6+(Brady,Brees,Peyton,A-Rod ect). As far as drafting a future QB, IM0 it’s Mariota or Johnny Football, if you remember Chip recruited both@ Oregon and both Verb. Committed until Manziel de-committed n went toA&M, Chip knows the pros n cons of both Qbs and it’ll be interesting to see if he has the chance and that’s their plan who he picks. Also I like Foles, Big guy, Big arm, can read D’s-just seemed like he was holding the ball too long vs Dallas n was to hesitant esp taking a deep shot to keep 8 out of the Box.I also like Barkley so far he came in vs Dallas down by 12(I think?) in the 4th he threw 3 picks but it was refreshing to see him come right back slinging it-made a big improvement from that game till NY IM0. Even if both are only career back ups or one turns out to be THE GUY, it’s still way too early for both of them to know. As far as drafting Lane at#4 I loved it, he’s athletic and it let Todd move to Rg& getting Kelce n Peters back w Mathis is HUGE. Lane n Peters(coming off Achilles) will both get better as we progress through this season, JPeters will get more n more confidence/comfortable with moving around and his athleticism back- n Lane at RT will keep learning the tech. N leverage ect that’ll be crucial to him becoming great. With those two, along with Mathis-Kelce-Todd Herr. There’s a nice OLine for the next couple of years intact, and that’s a young Qb’s best friend. Add in DJaX, Shady, hopefully Maclin and mybe add a big body/redzone WR not named Cooper n Chip will have the weapons, the line, n HIS Qb to run his offense n well see exactly what it’s capable of.

Obviously they are eyeing the kid from Oregon and Foles and Barkley are not welcomed there anymore so even if they win the job they will get the nod with regrets from the owner.

If Mariotta gets the job those two don’t want to be backups forever, they need to consider another team with weak QB’s if they feel they can out play them, like Fl x 3, Minnesota, and possibly Texas.

Yes, things can and will change but Bridgewater and Mariot look to be the first two guys off the board.

So how exactly will the Eagles get Mariota?

  51. mwcarolina says: Oct 31, 2013 9:31 PM

Well it’s not a shock. Files will be good for another team and Barkley isn’t that good yet and both don’t seem to fit Kelly’s offense. I think Mariota is who they want, but may have to settle for Manziel. Either would be great fits.

Foles is decent with a ceiling of being a good qb. Not a super bowl franchise qb. So put in Barkley now and let him develop. It will guarantee a good draft slot and then we’ll have a better idea if we need to use it for a qb.

Never going to happen, especially since the trade deadline has passed. Even if it didn’t, why would the Jags waste any picks on a guy that’s going to be a free agent at the end of the season?

  58. vonridel says: Oct 31, 2013 11:38 PM

Would like to see Vick go to Raiders to mentor TPryor. He would be extending his career by a few years and be asset to Pryor. I doubt Vick can get a starting job with another team and has no chance of getting a job in the broadcast booth with his dog fighting past.

  59. rugdaniels says: Nov 1, 2013 12:28 AM

I don’t think Lurie is really revealing much here, it’s pretty clear that this was Vick’s last year as a starter.

I don’t see how the Eagles are going to get Bridgewater or Marriota, too many teams who want a QB will be picking ahead of them. To get one of those two guys the Eagles will need to pay up big time to get a team to give up a top three pick.

  60. jimmysee says: Nov 1, 2013 3:35 AM

As a Packers fan, with a likely low draft pick, all these teams looking at QB’s is very encouraging.

If 6-8 QBs go in the first round, it leaves the remainder of the best draft candidates around for when it comes to Green Bay’s selection.

We know Ted Thompson has had great drafts.

Maybe next year he’ll hit on a first round selection, too.

  61. otis52gsh says: Nov 1, 2013 6:40 AM

The Redskins have a “great” QB you can have – he fancies himself a great player and thinks the supporting cast around him isn’t good enough – he also brings his own personal coach, Daddy Dearest, and the QB doesn’t need or want any coaching – he’s a self-starter and will remind you of Donovan McNubb with balls thrown high and low – and will remind you of Mike “The Dog Killer Vick” with the runs for losses and all the sacks.

You should act now while there is still some run in those legs since there is no game in his arm!

  67. fmc651 says: Nov 1, 2013 12:27 PM
