Chris Johnson: If we can’t run, we’re not going to the playoffs

Tennessee running back Chris Johnson is not playing well. He knows that’s a problem for the Titans.

Johnson’s stat lines in the last four games have gone like this: 15 carries for 21 yards, 10 carries for 17 yards, 12 carries for 33 yards and nine carries for 39 yards. That total — 46 carries for 110 yards, an average of 2.39 yards per carry — would be unacceptable for a third-string scrub, so it’s certainly unacceptable for one of the highest-paid running backs in the NFL. And Johnson says he thinks that if he can’t going, the Titans’ playoff chances are doomed.

“If the running game doesn’t get going, this is going to be another non-playoff team,” Johnson said, via Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. “But I think we have the players in here to do it, and I think we’re going to be OK.”

Titans coach Mike Munchak said he’d love to get the running game going, but he suggested that running back Shonn Greene may be almost as big a part of it as Johnson. Munchak said he’d like to see Johnson get 20 carries a game and Greene add 15. That’s probably unrealistic; there’s not a single team in the NFL that averages 35 carries a game.

But Johnson is right: If the Titans are going to snap their three-game losing streak, they’re going to need to run the ball better than they have.

Guess you’re not going to the playoffs then.

Chris Johnson not doing anything is into year three. Not three games.

  3. bennyb82 says: Nov 1, 2013 7:16 PM

Chris Johnson was extremely smart to holdout when he did…probably the best move he ever made.

  5. britishraven says: Nov 1, 2013 7:19 PM

It’s amazing that this guy still thinks this 2 years removed from him doing anything good.

Definitely bottom 5 RB in the league

  6. phukurmouf says: Nov 1, 2013 7:19 PM

U need to start making tacklers miss and being more decisive when running the football there CJ2YPC. Ive been watching u all year long. No more excuses as to why ur no longer a top5 rb.

Its also lookn like ur not standing as far back from the qb presnap as u once did. APs a good 6 yds back just about running full steam before which ever job squad qb hes got hands him the ball. Might wanna look into that. Peter King predicted u as offensive player of the year idk who looks more silly him for that claim or me drafting u!

    Over-rated! Clap, clap, clap!

This has been ongoing sense he got paid. Dude talks big but never delivers.

  9. harrisonhits2 says: Nov 1, 2013 7:35 PM

Maybe they should call him CJ.2k

  10. warhammer420 says: Nov 1, 2013 7:38 PM

All that gold in his mouth is slowing him down.

  11. kriswd40 says: Nov 1, 2013 7:42 PM

Time has come to cut CJ2.39.

  12. faulkana says: Nov 1, 2013 7:45 PM

I’d like to know how anybody gets quotes from him in the first place. I can’t understand a word he says.
I’d love to get wasted and see him and Clinton Portis perform Romeo and Juliet.
They should both come with subtitles.

  13. swaggyy says: Nov 1, 2013 7:53 PM

You ain’t going to the playoffs regardless homeboy

  14. turtlehut says: Nov 1, 2013 8:02 PM

He got his – Only stat line CJ cared about: $53.5 million contract extension, including $30 million guaranteed

  15. tomny0970 says: Nov 1, 2013 8:09 PM

CJ, take a look at Reggie Bush in New Orleans and Reggie Bush in Miami. One of the only good things Tony Sparano did was convince Reggie not to bounce EVERYTHING outside, to run between the tackles aggressively and – quite often – just fall freaking forward and take your 3 yards. Some of these guys think they’re Barry Sanders. This just in – YOU’RE NOT BARRY SANDERS. If you were, you could run for 1800 yards and a 5.2 average without a passing game nor an offensive line. BUT YOU’RE NOT HIM. So a little more Thomas Jones and a little less dancing behind the line of scrimmage might make you a more productive back.

You wouldn’t win a game in the playoffs if you do make it CJ. Your team isn’t conistent enough.

  19. thefiesty1 says: Nov 1, 2013 8:40 PM

Trade him to the CowBabies. Whoops, missed the deadline.

  20. gborange says: Nov 1, 2013 8:44 PM

Don’t worry about it CJ, There’s only about 10k titans fans at the home games anyway. The boos won’t be that loud. The only time the stadium is full is when Manning comes to town.

  21. docboss says: Nov 1, 2013 8:57 PM

Rams could be the cure for a poor run game.

  22. packerbackernj says: Nov 1, 2013 9:41 PM

Even when he rushed for 2k I laughed at people who said he was better then AP. Fools. His offensive line back then was completely under rated, and routinely was on the second level blocking for him. 2.3 Ypc is about what you’re going to get out of him with an average oline.

  23. bennyb82 says: Nov 1, 2013 10:01 PM

I bet he starts to regain his old form 16 games before his contract ends.

  24. pellison10 says: Nov 1, 2013 10:09 PM

1st of all,Titans games are ALWAYS sold out.Second, anyone with any football smarts knows that CJ hasn’t had much of a line to block for him till this year.No he hasn’t rushed for the 2K yards he once did but he’s still a 1000 yard back. And no we may not make the playoffs but at the same time,we very well May.The AFC south doesn’t have a clear cut front runner. If we can get 1 in Indy & 1 when H-town comes to Nashville,we will be in the hunt.So stop the CJ bombing.CJ is still a top 10,dare I say top 5 back.

  25. pellison10 says: Nov 1, 2013 10:12 PM

Like it or not CJ is still a top 10 back

  26. pellison10 says: Nov 1, 2013 10:16 PM

CJ is still a top 10 back

  27. jakafett says: Nov 1, 2013 10:23 PM

I hope they do, this is a tough, gritty team. I think Locker is on the verge too, hope they can make some noise.

  29. titansbro says: Nov 1, 2013 11:39 PM

Never overpay for RBs. Good RBs can be had for cheap.

  30. sfsugator says: Nov 2, 2013 12:19 AM

Sorry but you were never going, colts baby, maybe you can put more gold in your mouth in the offseason.

  31. mikejr80 says: Nov 2, 2013 12:59 AM

Dude is clearly done. Give up on the 2000 yds thing. Its over

  32. lawyermalloy says: Nov 2, 2013 2:00 AM

CJ, even if the team could run you weren’t going to the playoffs

  33. Foghorn The IKonoclast says: Nov 2, 2013 3:15 AM

Keeping your defense on the field is all about ball control/clock management. When you have the classic back you get that. But with all these spread offenses, the run game has become somewhat of an afterthought.

So in this sense Johnson has it right. At the same time, this also could be him getting another big contract. Being used to a lot of carries this new nexus is making his numbers more pedestrian.

This may be the underlying issue.

  34. emoney826 says: Nov 2, 2013 9:15 AM

The 2009-11 Packers would disagree with you, CJ.

  35. emoney826 says: Nov 2, 2013 9:17 AM

I mean 2009-12 Packers. All this running lately makes me think we’ve always ran the ball. Got me all confused.

  36. cags777 says: Nov 2, 2013 9:20 AM

If CJ wasn’t afraid of getting hit, he’d still be comparable to other RBs in this league. The problem, though, is he’s soft and overpaid. Titans should consider trading him during the offseason and make him work for his money elsewhere.

  37. db105 says: Nov 2, 2013 10:26 AM

In what language did he supposedly speak this in?

  38. larrydavid7000 says: Nov 2, 2013 11:28 AM

I did not know your team was in the running for the playoffs. ???????

  39. brettfavresmidget says: Nov 2, 2013 11:43 AM

I can safely say I didn’t draft this bum in FF.

  40. bengalsfan20 says: Nov 2, 2013 1:27 PM

Should have never spent the money on this bum, all talk.

  41. dodohead418 says: Nov 10, 2013 7:04 PM

If you don’t run harder either, you will become part of the problem.
