NFL suspends Justin Blackmon again for violating substance-abuse policy

The promising pro football career of Jaguars receiver Justin Blackmon is now officially teetering on the brink of implosion.

Blackmon, the fifth overall pick in the 2012 draft, has been suspended for the balance of the 2013 season.  He is eligible to apply for reinstatement before the 2014 season.

“All of us who are a part of the Jaguars family care very deeply about Justin and his well-being,” Jaguars G.M. Dave Caldwell said in a team-issued release.  “That said, he must be held accountable and accept the consequences announced today by the NFL.  His suspension will provide him the opportunity to receive the attention and professional treatment necessary to overcome his challenges, and we will support him during this time.  The Jacksonville Jaguars will evaluate Justin’s status once he has successfully met the criteria to be considered for reinstatement to the league.”

The eight-game suspension strongly suggests, based on the language of the substance-abuse policy, that the penalty was the result of a negotiation between the NFL and the NFLPA.

Blackmon, as we understand it, was in Stage 3 of the league’s substance-abuse program.  Violation of the policy while in Stage Three ordinarily results in a banishment with the ability to re-apply after a calendar year.  The union and/or Blackmon’s representatives apparently persuaded the league to trim the return date in half.

Still, Blackmon must remain clean throughout his suspension, since he remains subject to unannounced testing up to 10 times per month.  Any further slip-ups will make it harder for him to secure reinstatement in 2014.

I thought his character was rated a lot higher than Dez?

    Yeah right!

When you are on a 0-8 team on a Bye Week, it’s very easy to go into depression. Blackmon obviously couldn’t resist the tempation.

Guy probably wanted to forget he played for the Jaguars. Get himself released, get on the straight and narrow, find a new team.

  7. kylexitron says: Nov 1, 2013 4:28 PM

If i were a Jag’s fan I’d actually be relieved. You can move on now. No way this guy comes back to the team and no longer do you have to sit around just waiting for him to get in trouble again.

Find a QB and move on without this waste of flesh.

  8. hardate says: Nov 1, 2013 4:28 PM

Can you believe this fool? Miss 4 games, come back with 130+ & 190 yard breakout performances that show why you were drafted and now you are gone again? And it should have been a year, not the negotiated down 8 games that you got. He STILL got off lucky. Just wow.

Josh Gordon, I hope you are paying attention. I pray you are. This could be your life. This guy is going to dope his way out of the NFL like “56 catches & 13 touchdowns” hiimself, Charles Rogers.

Gene was worst GM in the league history. Far worse than Matt Millen. Comparing Gene to Matt Mallen is like comparing Tebow to Montana.

People assume it is pot, but like with Miller they kept talking about addiction, I have been told numerous times you can’t get addicted to pot, so is this something worse? It doesn’t seem to me that pot would be that big of a deal, but if it is coke or something worse then it is and should be. Hopefully he can get clean and stay that way.

  37. pone27 says: Nov 1, 2013 4:41 PM

  38. ramitbaby says: Nov 1, 2013 4:42 PM

  43. chaseutley says: Nov 1, 2013 4:46 PM

A diminished ban implies some sort of an appeal process occurred and, therefore, a delay in the breaking of this news. Is it possible that he got busted for his 3rd offense while still on suspension for his 2nd offense?

  44. djdvd says: Nov 1, 2013 4:47 PM

Kid needs help. For some reason he can’t seem to beat his demons and it is sad to see with the amount of talent he has shown. Here’s to hoping he and the Jaguars can help him for his own sake because it has seemed he has had his issues for a long time.

  45. bloodisred says: Nov 1, 2013 4:49 PM

If I’m not mistaken he’s in the ‘program’ because of his love of the bottle (2 DUIs). While alcohol abuse is a major issue, let’s not blur the “lines” and assume he’s “using”. I personally, wish him the best for turning things around and continued pursuit of his dream.

i disagree on how they treat these players with their suspension’s. i agree they should be suspended and seek the help they need, however keeping them away from their teammates and support group is only gonna make it harder on them to get their lives in order. johnny jolly had a codeine addiction and went through a similar situation, and now he is finally back dominating opposing offense’s. but the process the nfl has didn’t help him imo and he took steps back before he took steps foward. good luck.

  64. fletcher08 says: Nov 1, 2013 6:18 PM

  68. razzlejag says: Nov 1, 2013 6:36 PM

I’ve spent most of this season wondering why I have NFL Season Tickets. It isn’t the losing or the bad team b/c there are bright spots and hope springs eternal, it’s the behavior of the fans and the players.

The guy behind me whistles, a high-pitched, loud, non-stop two finger whistle when the Jags are on defense; I’ve seen fights and both men and women vomiting after games; the endless TV timeouts and commercial breaks…$28 to park the car.

Now this- our star receiver is suspended for the year.

    $1500- a year for this? I think I’m done.

  69. thejuddstir says: Nov 1, 2013 6:39 PM

If the NFL and the NFLPA agreed to the recent CBA that clearly spells out the punishments for the various levels of punishment for substance abuse etc. then why does there have to be any negotiations on a player’s punishment?????? Why would the NFLPA want to support a negotiation? This is the problem with the NFL, they have rules but are afraid to enforce them and the players know that.

  70. mrlaloosh says: Nov 1, 2013 6:40 PM

  72. atepper001 says: Nov 1, 2013 6:59 PM

if i played for the jags i’d be getting high everyday too.

scenario 1) – goes to cincy, gets arrested a couple more times which we will see on hard knocks at some point.

    2) goes to seattle – no one will notice because they never win any meaningful games.

    3) goes to detroit – on path to being a HOF with megatron on the other side but, implodes with no leadership from the top down in that sorry organization. becomes titus young’s roommate.

    4) goes to the pats, becomes the second coming of mother Teresa and the rich get richer while the team continues success in the regular season. but, brady still throws behind him like he does every other receiver. they lose in the playoffs to a decent team after torching within the division. the last throw by brady on their last drive is high and behind blackmon. he makes a leaping twisting effort but can’t come down with it. pats fans go crazy, leave a pile of butterfinger bars outside his home. no one mentions that brady’s throw was actually pretty poor considering he was wide open and had all day to throw.

  73. bigzant82 says: Nov 1, 2013 7:11 PM

You can’t get chemically addicted to pot is what they mean. You can mentally get addicted to pot though and MANY people are addicted to it, once you do something not because you like it but because you feel that you need it you’re addicted. Being in Philadelphia, Camden & Trenton NJ, seen way too many people like that.

Those suspensions should be hard-line guarantees. What possible mitigating factors could be persuasive enough to merit a 50% reduction? Why is this guy’s weed craving any different than another player’s? This guy gets paid a ton of money to play football, stay out of trouble and to not smoke weed–and he can’t get it done.

  82. fdugrad says: Nov 1, 2013 9:22 PM

It’s not as though The Jags got into bed with this mess unknowingly. His VERY serious troubles were documented and RECENT in nature prior to his signing. I do not follow this team, and I know nothing about the GM’s criteria when assessing a first round signee, however, in-depth knowledge regarding the person who pulled the trigger on this deal is not necessary for one to realize this should never have happened AND this episode should SURELY be this GM’s ticket to the unemployment line.

Not sure what that has to do with the topic but I suspect Art Modell wanted Baltimore for himself and the league simply arranged it. Not as bad as the Baltimore Colts leaving in the middle of the night but it’s close.

Indianapolis should not have been allowed to keep the “Colts” name, either. They should have become the Indianapolis Insurance Agents or something more apropos. Stealing the name was equally egregious to stealing the team.

On topic: I got nothing. The kid’s a bum.
