49ers waive linebacker Nate Stupar

The 49ers waived linebacker Nate Stupar on Saturday, the club said.

Stupar, 25, appeared in five regular-season games for the 49ers, recording five tackles. A first-year pro, Stupar played collegiately at Penn State. He was signed to the 49ers’ practice squad leading up to their divisional-round game vs. Green Bay.

The departure of Stupar leaves the 49ers with 53 players on the roster.

The 49ers have their bye this week. They host the Panthers on Nov. 10.

  1. With the bye week this week and the infusion of “new” fresh legs like Manningham, A. Smith, Carradine and now LMJ is a great strategic process going into the second half of the season.

Dec. 8th could be an epic game at the Stick.

  2. Played solidly but the talent level is just so deep that it’s difficult to keep him. Would start on many other teams.

  3. 49ers actually have 51 man roster just now, but Wright and Manningham have to be activated by Tuesday.

Aldon doesn’t count for a roster spot until Wednesday, when someone else will have to be released. (He had to be activated as soon as back from rehab by NFL rules, but doesn’t count against 53 for 7 days. Then he faces likely suspension after 2 court dates in next fortnight.)

Other spaces also have to be created for return of Crabtree and Moody, and possibly Lattimore, but that would only be likely if another RB gets injured.

  4. Aldon Smith will not be subject to NFL suspension until his legal issues are concluded. The court dates later this month (arraignments) are just the beginning. If either case ever makes it to trial it won’t be until next year . . . probably spring or summer.

  5. Man, you guys expect a lot of production out of a guy who hasn’t done much in two years, (Manningham) and a guy that I’m skeptical can return effectively from an achilles tear. (Crabtree)

  6. Tough business. Good luck to you Nate. Thanks for filling in. Doesn’t hurt your resume to be a linebacker on the 49ers…

Penn State LB’s are frickin’ studs.
