It’s official: Brian Waters’ brief NFL comeback has come to an end.

Waters, the veteran guard who ended an 18-month hiatus to sign with Dallas and immediately shored up the Cowboys’ offensive line, has been placed on season-ending injured reserve. The Cowboys said a strained rib, a hyperextended knee and a torn triceps, all suffered in last week’s loss to Detroit, all contributed to the decision to end Waters’ season. The triceps injury is the most severe of the three.

A 13-year veteran, Waters has been a solid asset to offensive lines in Kansas City and New England and was playing well for the Cowboys, but after this injury he may be ready to call it a career.

The Cowboys will now put guard Mackenzy Bernadeau back in the starting lineup. That’s a clear step backwards for the Cowboys’ offensive line, considering that the main reason they signed Waters was that Bernadeau was struggling. The Cowboys have to hope Bernadeau can play well enough that the loss of Waters doesn’t hurt too badly.
