The Saints started the day without wide receiver Marques Colston and they ended the first drive without running back Darren Sproles.
Sproles headed to the locker room after apparently being evaluated for an injury after getting hit by Jets linebacker David Harris and safety Antonio Allen on a short screen pass. Sproles didn’t show much sign of injury on the field, but reporters on the scene quickly reported he was being looked at by medical personnel before being hustled to the locker room.
The Saintes were able to continue their drive long enough for Garrett Hartley to try a 43-yard field goal. Hartley missed it left, allowing the Jets to avoid feeling too much anger about a fairly weak roughing the passer call on defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson. Wilkerson did make minimal, incidental contact with Brees’ head as Brees ducked away from the pass rush, but Brees wasn’t actually a passer at that point as he had yet to deliver the ball.
Thanks to Hartley’s miss, though, the Jets wound up with better field position than they likely would have gotten if they’d forced a punt by the Saints earlier in the drive.
UPDATE 1:33 p.m. ET: John Clayton of ESPN reports that Sproles is done for the day with an ankle injury.
UPDATE #2 1:42 p.m. ET: The Saints have announced that Sproles is questionable to return and is being evaluated for a concussion, so Clayton is either incorrect or Sproles is dealing with a pair of injuries.
