Saints activate Jonathan Vilma, who could play today vs. Jets

Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma could make his season debut today against the Jets.

The Saints activated Vilma from injured reserve with the return designation to their 53-man roster, which means he’s eligible to play in today’s game. Although the Saints haven’t officially declared him active for today’s game, it’s unlikely that they would have put him on the 53-man roster if they weren’t planning to play him.

Vilma, who had arthroscopic knee surgery in the preseason, has returned to practice and reportedly looked good. Vilma said on Friday that he felt like he was ready to go, and the Saints’ medical staff apparently agrees.

The Saints waived cornerback Chris Carr to make room for Vilma on the 53-man roster.

Rob Ryan is proving to be a heckuva coach. This should only help.

Love Vilma, but his play has fallen off significantly. Lofton has taken over his spot. I doubt he’ll be on the team next year.

If he plays, ya gotta expect he’ll have a lot rust to shake off. Wouldn’t expect a whole lot of impact. He may be medically cleared, but that’s totally different from being in mid-season game shape.
