Washington tops San Diego in overtime

San Diego Chargers v Washington Redskins Getty Images

Washington got its ground game going in a big way on Sunday.

With running back Alfred Morris routinely churning out yardage and fullback Darrel Young plunging for three touchdowns, Washington won a hard-fought overtime game over San Diego, 30-24.

Young’s final touchdown came on third-and-inches to culminate a long overtime drive in which Washington marched down the field methodically after receiving the overtime kickoff, never allowing San Diego to touch the ball in overtime.

The two teams went back and forth throughout the game, and the Chargers, despite trailing for the entire fourth quarter, had a chance to win it in regulation. What first appeared to be a Danny Woodhead game-winning touchdown was overturned and he was ruled out of bounds inside the 1-yard line, and the Chargers settled for a tying field goal at the end of the fourth quarter.

As crazy as it sounds for a team that has looked so bad for so much of this season, at 3-5 Washington is right in the thick of the NFC East race. Someone has to win that division, and there’s no reason to believe the Cowboys, Eagles or Giants are going to run away with it.

The Chargers, however, probably don’t have much hope of making the playoffs, even though they entered today’s game as the team with the sixth-best record in the AFC. In a tough division, San Diego is going to have a very tough time getting to the playoffs.

Still want to hear the explanation for how the referee determined with indisputable visual evidence that Woodhead didn’t breach the plane of the goalline out of bounds.

And they were supposed to spot it at the 6 inch line even though I don’t know how you figure he was that far away when the ruling was a TD and it looked like he breached the plane on replay or at least came within 6 inches, but no way he was a full 6 inches away.

But they spotted that ball behind the 1/2 yard line, that’s MORE than 18 inches away!!

What happens if the next play is offsides on the Defense for 1/2 the distance to the goal? Even after a penalty they would have been more than the original 6 inches away that the referee declared!!

Ladies and Gentleman, THE Holy Trinity of Football come thru in Griffin, Morris and the Holy Garcon! This is why I rank Griffin and Morris as the best at their positions and why Garcon is the best WR not named Calvin Johnson in this league! Did you see the catches Mr. Garcon made! If you don’t like Pierre Garcon, you don’t like NFL Football! That tick you hear is the offical start to the countdown for the Washington Redskins Superbowl Victory. In approximately, T-minus 89 days, Daniel Snyder, Mike Shanahan, Robert Griffin the 3rd will be marching into Metlife Stadium in New York to stomp on the AFC representative en route to our 4th Vince Lombardi Trophy! We are no longer letting up. Lace up your boots to the other 31 NFL teams. The Washington Redskins are coming! #HTTR

Stupid play calling lost this game for the Chargers.

  6. Mr. Wright 212 says: Nov 3, 2013 4:36 PM

What in the WORLD were the Bolts doing after that dive by Woodhead for 1st and Goal??? SMH awful play calling.

  7. beertech says: Nov 3, 2013 4:37 PM

#HTTR what a game. So much love for the Defense withe goal line stand to force overtime.

  8. baddegg says: Nov 3, 2013 4:37 PM

It’s amazing that they are still in it. But when you think about the fact that Dallas is the main team that stands in their way, they actually have a shot.

Dallas almost lost to Minnesota of all teams today and barely won due to a last minute TD. It’s not like they are running away with it.

Skins need to grow from this and hope to beat Minn next week. They almost choked it but a win is a win.

    Now let’s hear it haters!

  9. allidoiswin55 says: Nov 3, 2013 4:38 PM

Rg3 needs to be careful with some of the shots he’s taking. He seems to be most successful when he’s taking them or at least in position to take them ie actually in the game and not blown out.

Want this kid to do well but more and more he reminds me of Vick, with some luck he can continue to develop if not he’s going to be potent but avg as a qb.

It’ll be a long quiet flight back home to San Diego for the Chargers.

    Filled with “what-ifs.”

  11. govtminion says: Nov 3, 2013 4:42 PM

I’m not sure one can say the Redskins won the game, so much as the Chargers refused to win it. That was some grade-A weird play calling towards the end- you’d have thought Norv was back in town or something.

  12. classyjacklambert says: Nov 3, 2013 4:43 PM

    Lol the redskins are terrible.

  13. quietdownandlisten says: Nov 3, 2013 4:44 PM

Not a redskins fan but couldn’t help but to be shocked on how they stopped the chargers on the 1 yard line!!! WOW… Wouldn’t sleep on these boys. Crazy running game too. Jesus. My cowboys better sort out our mess! Skins are about to pull another late season push.

  14. theskinsman says: Nov 3, 2013 4:47 PM

Hail! Great game, wild finish, and for this long suffering REDSKINS fan, any win, coupled with a no-talent Norv loss is a great day.

  18. malieckal says: Nov 3, 2013 4:51 PM

That goal line stand was the stuff of legend.

Woodhead got the benefit of the doubt on the fumble, he didn’t reach the pylon. Right call.

Bolts played well on O, that Allen kid pwned Amerson in the 4th Q. Rivers made no mistakes.

Wins like this are ones you can savor.

  19. ialwayswantedtobeabanker says: Nov 3, 2013 4:52 PM

Chargers had NO nuts – had the ball at the 1/2 yard line and made one sackless play call after another – despite having 2 timeouts.

By contrast, the Redskins did nut up. Faced with similar challenges, they mashed the Bolts.

If I’m San Diego fan, I’m a little frosted by the glaring lack of stones in their offensive play-callers – it cost them huge today.

  20. melikefootball says: Nov 3, 2013 4:56 PM

Was a fun game and way to go REDSKIN. I wish the announcers had some guts as they would with the replacements officials, was really suspect calls on both sides of ball. I’m so tired of these new rules.

I`m a Redskins fan and I must disagree with you Mr.Logicalvoice!

First of Garcon did have a good game,But its about freakin time!!!! I was cussin`him out all season for underachieving!!! Now how about some consistency Mr.Garcon!!!!

Another victim of my severe cuss outs was that awful defense however that goal line stand was awesome! Other than that it was like having San Diego`s offense out there by themselves Is there anybody that can cover???

You have got to be straight nuts to believe My Redskins will be in the Superbowl! Same goes for anybody else in that awful division!!!!

  26. worknman24hours says: Nov 3, 2013 4:59 PM

Washington fought very hard to win this game but they got some key calls go their way as well.

The defense gave up way too many passing yards to the Chargers late in the game.

The defensive backfield looked amateur in the way it was coached late in the game.

Washington should be happy they won because they got really, really lucky late in regular time and in overtime too.

And RG 3 needs to rethink the number of runs he’s making if he wants to be active at the end of the season.

Robert, you are still falling to the ground with your legs flailing, not holding them together or tensed at all.

This is a great way to get your knees destroyed again.

Why hasn’t your coaches told you to ball up your legs to protect them before you fall to the field.

It’s ridiculous the way you are dropping the field with your legs loose ready for a defensive player to practically tear them right off your body.

    Where is the coaching?

  39. beerbudsnbevo says: Nov 3, 2013 6:04 PM

    Overtime win at home huh?

And garbage about how bad the Cowboys are (more like mediocre), and how magical the win by the Redskins was?

I’d say they are both on about the same level as far as wins go… underachievers.

Both should have dominated if they were any good.

Fortunately for the Cowboys, they own the division in wins and they have some heavy hitters like DWare coming back after a bye week in two…

    Redskins have nothing coming back.

    We’ll see.

  40. terpfan76 says: Nov 3, 2013 6:12 PM

The ball did not break the plane of the goal line in bounds, that much was relatively clear, the issue lied in whether or not he hit the pylon with the ball. That much was cleared up on review.

The officiating overall in this game was turrible. The offensive pass interference was horrible! The defenseless receiver call? Awful. The one holding call on Chester was bad as was the non-fumble…

If the Redskins want to have a chance at winning the division, and that’s the only way we make the playoffs, is by riding Alfred Morris. His power running sets up so many things for the passing game. They also need to run more rollout play action passes.

    D. Hall has been playing at almost a All Pro level but how long will he keep it up? Fletcher has slowed down a lot and where is Orakpo? Kerrigan can’t carry the pass rush.

We won you lost. Deal with it. You lost to a team considered to be one of the worst in the NFC. What’s that make you all?

Congratulations to the skins for winning a close game!

  68. blu4l1fe says: Nov 5, 2013 1:27 PM

Hey hold up! As a Giants fan, I recognize and acknowledge the (not-even) mediocre of a team that is playing at the Meadowlands this season, who may just be the worse of the division. But I refuse to be grouped with the skins and some of their delusional fan headed by none other than the resident psycho. (Yeah right, SB aspirations while being under .500 and alternating wins and losses). Win a close game and they’re celebrating like it’s Mardi Gras.

I would just remind everyone, mostly NFC East teams fans, to calm down and watch at the end of the season. But since everyone’s predicting things, let me make mines. The Cowboys make the playoffs, barely. The Giants finish last, with the Eagles at third and the skins miss out while finishing another disappointing season with Cousins at center.

    How bout’ that?

    SB…. lol….

  69. channer81 says: Nov 5, 2013 3:59 PM

There was no point in SD passing the ball with 15 seconds left and 2 timeouts when the ball’s on the half yard line. If I’m Wash, I’m holding their WR’s all day idc if they call PI. What were they gonna do, move the ball a couple inches? They don’t reset the game clock, time is your enemy. SD should have brought in the beef and you had two to three chances to get it into the endzone running it.

And why would SD play it safe and go for the FG at the end? Its 4th down why not go for it? Send the message, if you get it you deserve to win if you don’t you didn’t deserve it but the Redskins showed you why don’t go for overtime because you may never see the ball in OT.
