Broncos going with Jack Del Rio as interim coach

Baltimore Ravens v Denver Broncos Getty Images

The Broncos have decided who’s going to preside while John Fox gets well.

According to multiple reports, the Broncos are going to name defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio interim coach, while Fox recovers from a procedure to repair a heart valve defect.

Del Rio, who was also Fox’s first defensive coordinator in Carolina, was head coach for nine years in Jacksonville, with a 68-71 record.

He’s probably learned something since then, and hopefully does not ask Peyton Manning to keep chopping wood during Fox’s absence.

Jacksonville and Cincinnati are the only places that keep coaches for nearly a decade with losing records

    Bad move.

Jags would kill to be .500 these days.

Peyton Manning should be the head coach of this team on an interim basis. If Jack does one thing to hurt this offense I hope everyone gangs up on him. Don’t listen to anything this guy says Peyton! There was a reason you walked off of the field at Winner practically every time you played him.

  5. jagsfan1 says: Nov 4, 2013 10:36 AM

As a Jags fan…people around here are starting to realize that – compared to the DISASTER we have become since he left…perhaps he wasn’t that bad!

Update: Peyton Manning will continue coaching the offense and Jack Del Rio will continue with the defense. Del Rio will defer to Manning on big decisions.

Good move… Del Rio had a crappy team and a bad front office in FL. This is a great opportunity to show the NFL he can be a great head coach. I think the Broncos will be just fine with Peyton driving the offense.

I’d like to hire Peyton Manning to be the Vikings CEO, President, GM, Coach, and OC. Like, right now.

  10. shackdelrio says: Nov 4, 2013 10:49 AM

Del Rio had a nice early run in Jacksonville. But whenever they had elevated expectations, they seemed to fold under pressure. Three times (2004, 2006, 2010) his teams had a chance to clinch a playoff spot and lost. His teams were always good in the underdog role. He is not exactly walking into an underdog role in Denver.

yea del rio is a pretty good coach. him and fox are a great match, similar philosophy.

  13. Milehighmagic58 says: Nov 4, 2013 10:56 AM

I’m surprised by this move. I figured we’d bring in Papa John, given his good working relationship with Manning, and generous discounts on cardboard pizza.

  14. joetoronto says: Nov 4, 2013 11:00 AM

Don’t forget to bring the axe into the dressing room, Jack.

  15. milehighchief says: Nov 4, 2013 11:02 AM

hmmm…seems I remember JDR (who I loved as a lb in KC)…during the 80’s players strike actually assaulted Otis Taylor (a TRUE legend) in the parking lot of Arrowhead as they were picketing replacement players when OT asked the union players to settle down…and JDR AND Bill Mass were riding around in the back of a pick-up with shotguns…hmmm…

“Marvin Lewis finished .500 or above in 7 seasons from 2003-2012.”

A 500 record is the worst record to have. Not good enough for the playoffs, and not good enough to grab one of the top players in the draft. He’s had enough time there that there should not be consecutive mediocre records.

  17. forsbergler says: Nov 4, 2013 11:04 AM

Everyone knows Peyton is the Offensive Coordinator and Jack runs the defence. If He worries about the D and Peyton and the OC worry about the O, I think we will be ok. This doesn’t help when we have a race with KC for top spot in the division. Get well soon John

  23. lonespeed says: Nov 4, 2013 11:25 AM

Okay, we get it. Haha. Peyton’s the real coach of this team. Let it die. It’s not funny anymore. The first fifty people already thought of that joke before you. You’re not as funny as you think you are.

  24. jnovi86 says: Nov 4, 2013 11:55 AM

Good call, since Jacksonville was such an unstoppable powerhouse with del rio at the helm…

I do recall a Seattle team making playoffs with a 7-9 record. 500 record is hardly the worst record to have. Who says the top players in the draft are all gonna be good?I ll take a 8-8 record over 0-16 any year. Atleast at 500 your team can compete and has hope.

  26. caseyanthonymunoz says: Nov 4, 2013 12:10 PM

Fox’s heart went into panic mode when he saw Peyton’s 9-11 post season record.

  27. 2ruefan says: Nov 4, 2013 12:18 PM

You people all making predictions of failure just because Del Rio will be a temporary Interim coach are hilarious. What do you think.. he is going to suddenly CHANGE everything they are doing suddenly? Appoint different coaches and coordinators? He’s interim people! And I SUSPECT that Fox will probably be talking to him and providing direction while “off” anyway.
Really… have a beer and relax. If they Broncos lose more than 1 game during the time Fox is out I’ll be surprised. And if they do, it doubt it will be because the team was bested in terms of coaching….

  28. nflfan1326 says: Nov 4, 2013 12:31 PM

Del Rio doesn’t have Gene Smith or Shack Harris as GM. He’ll be fine.

  29. rodh32340 says: Nov 4, 2013 1:01 PM

Del Rio will coach the Defense and Peyton will run the offense, there are no changes that will be perceived by the fan. Manning has always been a Coach-maker, Fox has been the recipient of the Denver years.

  33. jredshoes says: Nov 4, 2013 1:47 PM

Having you head coach gone isn’t that big a deal. Look how well the Saints did last year without Sean Payton

  34. Dogsweat says: Nov 4, 2013 2:36 PM

    Coach JDR!!!!

  35. johninthewest says: Nov 4, 2013 2:59 PM

Does it really matter who’s the head coach on this team? They still will go 13-3 or 14-2. Hell, I could coach the team if I wanted to!

  36. xcandrew says: Nov 4, 2013 3:22 PM

Del Rio’s 68-71 record in Jax is meaningless. How quickly we forget that Fox went 73-71 in Carolina…

    Broncos will be fine.

Cool KC haters already prepairing their defense for Denvers loss in two weeks…

  40. turtlehut says: Nov 5, 2013 10:39 AM

Peyton is the coach – even an incompetent coach like Jim Caldwell was able to take a Peyton QBed team to a Super Bowl loss (even though he tried to destroy Colt’s momentum by tanking the last 2 games to avoid the pressure) while without Peyton but essentially the same players and staff the next year took the Colts to the number 1 draft pick.
