Dolphins sign David Arkin off Cowboys practice squad

Ben Bass, David Arkin AP

The matters involving Dolphins guard Richie Incognito and tackle Jonathan Martin go well beyond the field of play, but it also means that the departure of both players from the team leaves the Dolphins in need of some help on the offensive line.

They addressed that need on Tuesday. Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports reports that the team will sign guard David Arkin off of the Cowboys’ practice squad to fill the spot on the roster opened up when Incognito was suspended for conduct detrimental to the team.

Arkin was a fourth-round pick in 2011 and has stuck around the Cowboys for the last three years without ever playing in a regular season game. He’ll almost certainly move into a reserve role with the Dolphins, who will give Nate Garner first crack at the open job at left guard.

Presumably recent events will allow him to start practicing without paying any dues to the veteran members of the Dolphins offensive line.

Please stop signing Cowboys scrubs. Their line has been bad the last few years and this guy couldn’t get on the field. They should have identified the best o-line in the league and poached the best guy on their practice squad. Outside of Fasano I can’t remember the last Cowboys reject that worked out in Miami

How desperate can you get? Poaching an offensive lineman from the Cowboys, the team that keeps signing guys off the street to start for their lines?

I worked with this guy in college at Missouri State. Given the opportunity, he will be successful. He has a fiery attitude on the field too

Jeff Ireland just can’t let the Cowboys connection go.

I interviewed this young man when he was drafted for the newspaper I was working out here in Southwest Missouri. Seemed like a really smart kid and obviously, he played pretty well to be drafted in any round out of Missouri State (SMSU–always will be to me). I believe he was drafted in the highest round yet to date for a player from our school, so that was cool too. I hope he can make it to their active roster and succeed. Can’t be much worse than the O-linemen they have–been bad even before this whole Icognito and Martin story broke.

Randy Starks was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft. We got him 4 seasons later.
