Matt Flynn clears waivers

AP

As it turns out, the Packers weren’t being discreet about Aaron Rodgers’ injury because they hoped to making a claim for the contract of former Packers backup Matt Flynn.

Flynn, cut Monday by the Bills before Rodgers broke his collarbone, went through waivers unclaimed on Monday, a league source tells PFT.

The Packers were low in the priority, which means someone could have claimed Flynn to block the Packers from getting him.

The Packers apparently didn’t care.  They made no claim, no one else did, either, and now Flynn becomes a free agent.  Again.

For Green Bay, it appears that they’ll stick with Seneca Wallace and Scott Tolzein under Rodgers can return.  Which could mean more losses for the Packers until Rodgers comes back.

  1. Couldn’t it just be that the Packers didn’t want to pay his riddiculous salary? I’d be shocked if they don’t bring him in for a workout and offer him to the minimum. He likely knows the system than Wallace or Tolzien.

  2. Flynn’s career might be over, but if it is he made millions of dollars, got a ring, and has a packers record for td passes in a game. Who wouldn’t take that?

  3. The Packers have a QB friendly offense and they know how to get guys ready. Wallace was thrown in with most likely little to no first team reps ever in their offense considering he came to GB after training camp had already ended. I’m not a Packers fan but I expect much better play from him next week.

  4. If Flynn came back to the Pack and won those games for us, man, what a great American storybook tale that would be!

Too bad everyone else outside of the packer fanbase lives in reality and sees how terrible the packers are without rodgers.

  6. How has Wallace lasted in the NFL so long? He can run….and that’s all. The Packers atleast have a run game this year. If this would have happened any other year they’d be totally screwed. Now they’re only kind of screwed.

  7. This is actually good news for Aaron Rodgers…he gets to spend more free time with his buddy Ryan Braun and go on romantic lunch dates and stargaze with each other

Don’t forget he’s married to former Miss Louisiana. But yeah, he’s led such a HARD life.

  9. Given the choice between Matt Flynn and Seneca Wallace, I’d choose Seneca Wallace too.

Just glad they don’t have to watch Clipboard Jesus Charlie Whitehurst!

BTW, Clipboard Jesus > Matt Flynn

  10. According to a Milwaukee radio station 1250 a reporter asked a unnamed person in the Packers front office about acquiring Flynn and was answered with an eye roll.

  11. … And the Packers’ radar.

He’s going to retire after this year because that alleged elbow problem looks like a long term career ender.

  12. You can’t really fault Matt Flynn. The team officials that offered him all that money should take the blame. He did very well for himself just off of his performance as a Packer. Green Bay should sign him, if he is healthy, just in case Wallace would get hurt.

  13. I never understood why teams decide to pay guys like him and RFitzpatrick/Kolb/Cassell (career backups) so much money after only a few good games. Talk about premature.

His 1-year contract with the Bills was for the veteran minimum for a player with 4-6 years of experience…$715,000. Unless he had some ridiculous incentives and escalators in his contract the Packers did not like, can’t see how his salary played a critical role in the Packers’ decision.

  15. Who on this message board wouldn’t want to be Matt Flynn? He didn’t demand any money. He was never a great player who held out, got his money and then stunk it up like many others. He obviously was never that good. People who are paid a lot of money because they are supposed to know what they are doing gave it to him for one game. He will retire rich and will be walking upright in his older years. I’m sure all of us would be fired at our jobs if we threw away 15 million dollars. I’d rather be Flynn then
    Asumaghi
    Haynesworth
    Jamarcus Russel
    Santonio Holmes

Just to name a few pirates.

  16. I’d actually rather Green Bay bring in Vince Young, at least if he’s in good shape you can simply run/option/playaction all day. Young has a strong arm, and is quick on his feet.

  17. Thought the Packers were weaker than their record with a tissue OL, the loss of key offensive players and a defense missing#52 with Rogers healthy. Now they get Chip Kelly’s offense with the new star of the league at QB. Going to be a long winter Green Bay.

Top 5 $$ fleecers in no particular order: Flynn, Kolb, Sanchez, Haynesworth, Russell.

Russell is top dog on that list. Easily.

  19. This guy can’t be worse than Brandon Weeden . The Browns should cut Weeden, and bring Flynn in . They don’t play this week, and Flynn could be the backup to Campbell. Weeden is wasting a roster spot anyways.

  20. The Packers Would be crazy to try and sign Matt Flynn; I mean signing Flynn to start and lead your team would be just as crazy as signing, and starting Kelly Holcomb, Trent Edwards, Rob Johnson, Alex Van Pelt, JP Losman, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brian Brohm, Shane Mathews, Jeff Tuel, and Thad Lewis……. Maybe they should bring in Matt Leinhart, Vince Young, Drew Bledsoe, and Levi Brown to see what they what they left in the tank. Sorry if I forgot any other QB’s who will/need a job.
    Love,
    The Buffalo Bills
