Packers to promote Scott Tolzien to active roster

Scott Tolzien, Colin Kaepernick AP

The Packers were already paying Scott Tolzien like a member of the 53-man roster. Now he’s on it.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Tolzien will be promoted from the practice squad to the active roster in the wake of the broken collarbone suffered by starter Aaron Rodgers.

Seneca Wallace, who is now the starter for at least the near-term, was the only other quarterback on the active roster last night.

Tolzien is familiar to local fans, leading Wisconsin to the Rose Bowl his senior year. He spent time with the Chargers and 49ers before making his back to the Midwest, where he’s now a play away from taking the field.

If I am not mistaken, former Packer super-sub Matt Flynn had an elbow problem/injury and that was a main reason for his uninspired play. Maybe that’s why Packers have not resigned him? Anyone have more on this?

Oh good, I was worried about the Packers season becoming a total dumpster fire but my fears are now put to rest.

luck to win just 1 game before AR gets back…..tt is not a genius as has been the call lately and mcchubby is not a QB guru….FYI….wallace looked like he hadn’t playe game before…you rush for 200 yards at home, block a punt and recover an onside kick and all you can score is 20? mcchubby sitting on his red flag and not challenging Quarles’ catch…pathetic

I thought Flynn would have given Green Bay the best chance to get the ball down the field. Maybe they like the idea of teams loading the box and giving Wallace and the receivers more 1×1 opportunities which Nelson and Jones often win.

…that being said, Flynn’s elbow has to be an issue.

    Hey Nitz –

The defense cost GB game last night. They were awful on a night they needed to tighten up. They allowed Bears to march up and down field all night, including that insane eight-plus-minute drive to salt game away.

cjpackfan sounds like a Favre fan who is still upset TT sent him packing. Yup…a real GM genius would’ve seen Clay’s rare broken thumb, a broken leg from Cobb, and a career threatening injury happening to Finley coupled with a broken collarbone from arguably the best QB in the league, coming a mile away and would’ve wasted millions on a big name free agent. A lot of backseat GMs and Monday morning QBs today. If Peyton went down, the Broncos would be in the same situation. Enough already. Stop it.

When you havent much offense, your defense is going to get wore out quick. The “D”played well in the first part of the game I thought

Pack will be fine. Let Wallace work with the number 1’s for a week. Plus, the division isn’t that tough. Pack lost due to shoddy D, not Rodgers being out.

    Stay Calm and Carry On.

As much as I hate saying it …. give vy the call, he looked decent in preseason

I’d like to see what Tolzien can do. Certainly was a fan of his when he was with the Niners as he had a great 2012 preseason making it difficult on Kaepernick to get that backup QB job behind Smith. Now go play the game like you were trained to do and hold down the fort till AR comes back.

as a 49ers fan who has seen both…id take Tolzien to start all day over Wallace…hope he gets some playing time, good luck Scott!

I’d feel better about Wallace if he was in his mid 20’s. Back then he still had the ugly throwing motion, but could do some damage with his feet.

The enormity of the responsibility hit Scott. Here he was, just a brain cramp away from being an NFL starting QB.

This is awesome. Now they’re trying to convince themselves that everything will be fine because their defense can’t make up for poor quarterback play. This will be a fun month.

Someone sees something in Tolzien to pay him third year money while on the practice squad. This kid is smart, he is prepared and if he gets a chance he will succeed. I hope you get your chance #16!
