Report: Steve Gregory broke his thumb, will miss a few weeks

The Patriots may have to go without another defensive starter for the next few weeks.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that safety Steve Gregory broke his thumb in Sunday’s victory over the Steelers and is expected to miss a few weeks as a result of the injury. Gregory has started seven of the team’s nine games this season and has been wearing the communication device in his helmet the last couple of weeks, which will lead to a switch in how the signals are relayed to the defense in New England for a little while.

Gregory has made 52 tackles and broken up two passes for the Patriots this season. Duron Harmon is the likely replacement for Gregory in the starting lineup.

The Patriots have already lost nose tackle Vince Wilfork, defensive tackle Tommy Kelly and linebacker Jarod Mayo for the season from a defense that held up very well while the team’s offense found its footing. Defensive end Rob Ninkovich was also forced out of Sunday’s win with an injury, although there’s no word on if he’s at risk of missing time when the Patriots return to work in Week 11.

  1. Well at this point I’m just happy it’s not season ending. The Patriots have a long bye week this year (they next play on MNF) and if it’s just a few weeks then he should be back at the end of this month or at the start of December.

Ninkovich was back on the Patriots sidelines before the game was over and my guess is that he would come back in and played if the Patriots didn’t have such a big lead.

  2. Next man up its all they can do. If the Pats win the division much less any playoff games Belichick deserves the coach of the year.

I know Reid has done a surprisingly good job in KC and done an incredible turnaround there, but damn, I think this makes over half the starters from the first game out for significant lengths of time if not the season.

  3. This player was doing a great job of shoring up the run defense as well as setting up the defensive alignment. Next man up.

  4. Stop with all this karma crap you sound so ridiculous just because your team sucks doesn’t mean you get to hate on the Pats.

They’re a first class organization and just because they’ve been the best team in the league for the past decade doesn’t mean you get to broadcast your jealousy over forums to try to make them look bad.

All you hating losers need to get a life.

  5. Put a cast on it and get him out there – enough injuries already!
See if the Packers will give up a 1st or 2nd round pick for Mallett…
