Ponder exits, Cassel enters for Vikings

The Vikings’ game of quarterback musical chairs continues.

Christian Ponder, who started tonight’s game against Washington, was injured while diving toward the end zone late in the third quarter and had to come out of the game. On the play, Ponder extended the ball toward the pylon as he took a hit. He was initially ruled to have scored a touchdown, but replays showed the ball never actually crossed the goal line.

Unfortunately, Ponder took a hard hit in his attempt to dive into the end zone, and he had to leave the game. Matt Cassel entered for one play, a handoff to Adrian Peterson, who waltzed into the end zone for a one-yard touchdown.

There’s no word yet on the severity of Ponder’s injury. At the moment, Ponder is in the locker room, Cassel is the quarterback, and Josh Freeman remains on the sideline.

love his courage love his toughness

hate his instincts, weak arm, accuracy, and his inability to read defenses

Washington’s defense made Ponder look like a good QB.

Also, RG3 is getting punished. His shelf life in the NFL is severly limited.

What happened? I’m watching a real football game on ESPN. Oregon getting exposed.

Pretty good game by Ponder. And he gets his final revenge on the Vikes, costing them their top 3 draft pick. Nice.

I love how physical our defense is. Third QB we knock out this year. Don’t then come back talking about how we won because the backup came in…no, WE knocked out your starter. #Physicalhardfootball

Does Leslie Frazier ever talk? I’ve never seen his lips move.

Before someone said that was a clean hit on Ponder, no Hall is a dirty player and he used his helmet.

Well, at least Ponder can say he played to Aaron Rodger’s level for once…

I hope Josh Freeman has a good financial advisor because this will be the last chance he has to scam an NFL team out of a dollar…

Ponder has been playing well again — of course when it doesn’t matter. Freeman must be terrible to be #3 after the Vikings tried to hand him the starting job. Confusing — but entertaining game at least.

Leave it to the Vikings to fail even at tanking for a draft pick.

  13. bigwayne75 says: Nov 7, 2013 11:30 PM

Washington wasn’t cheated the Vikings won that fair and square.

What the hell happened to the NFC east. Moss was clearly out of bounds and boy oh boy there’s another loss for a once tough division

That’s another reason ponder will never be a long term starter that gets lost in his horrible play: he gets hurt a ton.

LOL@the redskins. What an awful team.

RGIII < Ponder and Cassel. #RedskinsOverrated

  24. hakk03 says: Nov 8, 2013 12:26 AM

    What a shame.

He was so determined to prove himself that he made an enormous blunder in taking that brutal hit, as opposed to running out of bounds at the 2 yard line. His career had a chance for a giant upswing, until he risked far too march for one yard. Adrian Peterson will pop a hemorrhoid before failing at 1 & goal from the 2.

Marcus Mariota looked pretty bad tonight. So I’m sure Rick Spielman took note that he could suck enough to be our starter next year!

  26. defscottyb says: Nov 8, 2013 12:47 AM

Skins O is good but the D sucks. Ref missed holding all day on the Vikings and a big illegal contact/PI on Jordan Reed at the end. Shouldn’t of came to that, the Skins are a better team than Minn but they won so congrats to them. Hail!

After that terrible interception on the first drive, Ponder was fantastic the rest of the game. He does this every once in a while. If he could be consistent, he could be a good starter for a while.

  28. ivanpavlov0000 says: Nov 8, 2013 1:11 AM

He was lucky it wasn’t a turnover/touchback. I hate it when players stick out the ball with one hand like that. It’s asking for trouble.

and the Vikings QB carousel goes round and round…next back up is J. Freeman!!!

  33. scottpavek says: Nov 8, 2013 9:37 AM

Loved Ponder today. This whole “what else do I have to lose?” attitude seems to be freeing him up. He isn’t (as) paralyzed reading defenses. Sure, he did couple of his “one read then run” plays, and his special “one read then sack” plays, but he also got the ball off while moving around in the pocket, made some courageous throws, and ran with abandon. This is the kind of game that makes it hard to hate Ponder and leads me back to blaming coaches/line/receivers/refs/fans/weather for his poor performance. I think he’ll leave Minnesota when his contact expires, but if this dude could sit on the bench behind a real starter he’d have time to prepare like Aaron Rodgers. He’d also have to add about ten pounds of muscle to his delts – being unable to throw the ball fifty yards into the endzone is inexcusable. (Note: I cannot throw the ball fifty yards into the endzone.)

When the ref’s extend drives on bogus penalties, injuries will follow.
