The Muscle Hamster will have to stay in his giant plastic ball for the rest of the 2013 season.

The Buccaneers have placed running back Doug Martin on injured reserve, ending his year as a result of a torn labrum in his shoulder. Martin hasn’t played since Week Seven as a result of the injury and optimism about a return this season steadily deteriorated before Friday’s announcement. Martin was going to have surgery whether or not he was able to find a way to play again this year, so he’ll presumably have the operation sooner now that his season is over.

Martin ends his second season with 456 yards and a touchdown on 127 carries. That’s a lower level of production than Martin reached during his rookie season, but, then, not much has gone right for anyone in Tampa this season. Mike James has replaced Martin the last two weeks and should remain in the role moving forward.

The Buccaneers have promoted linebacker Ka’lial Glaud from the practice squad to fill the open spot on their roster.
