Colts melt down, Tavon Austin runs wild as Rams win

St Louis Rams v Indianapolis Colts Getty Images

In perhaps the most surprising result of this NFL season, the St. Louis Rams went to Indianapolis and dominated the Colts in all phases of the game, winning 38-8 in a contest that was never even close.

The story of the game was Rams rookie receiver Tavon Austin, who finally had the kind of game the Rams were hoping for when they drafted him. Austin had a 98-yard punt return for a touchdown, and touchdown catches of 57 and 81 yards. All in all, Austin had a whopping 314 all-purpose yards.

The other story of the game was that the Colts’ offense was a mess. Although Andrew Luck totaled 354 yards, a lot of that was in garbage time, and he threw three interceptions. Trent Richardson was terrible, gaining just two yards on five carries.

The Colts play in a bad division, the AFC South, and so they’re still heavy favorites to make the playoffs. But they look like a team whose injuries are taking a serious toll.

The Rams play in a good division, the NFC West, and so they’re unlikely to make the playoffs. But they look like a team that’s still playing hard. They sure took it to the Colts today.

Games like this, the young Rams still look like an up and comer.

Got youth and talent on their side, and lots of NFL experience on the sideline.

OK Mr.Isray, I want you to tweet likemy 10 year old sister does and explain how bad a move Richardson trade was? Also waiting for u to tweet how great your team is gonna be. LOVING IT as a RAM fan here. Try beating them in four years. Colts were likable team till lil girl owner began his little girl tweets and opening mouth. You guys falling in Cowboys, Raiders, And Patriot category as far as a team to root against cause of a dope on team. And dope is Owner. Imagine that.

Overrated Colts. Very lucky to beat Seattle and Houston after brutal first half’s where they were lucky do be down by only a few in both those games, a loss to SD and barely held on vs a sleepy Denver team after getting out to a big lead.

  8. nfl4days says: Nov 10, 2013 4:28 PM

Im not going to lie, I though the browns were idiots for making the trade they did. Now it looks like they got away with highway robbery. The browns may end up a force to be reckoned with if they use those picks wisely.

  9. slbasegame257 says: Nov 10, 2013 4:31 PM

I’m just going to keep putting this out there until people finally get it. Andrew Luck’s career stats are 17 wins and 8 losses, 37 TDs, 24 Ints, 58% on completions, 7 yards per attempt, 79 QB rating. Russell Wilson’s career stats are 20 wins and 6 losses, 43 TDs, 16 Ints, 63% on completions, 8.1 yards per attempt, 101 QB rating. Russell Wilson is B-E-T-T-E-R than Andrew Luck.

  21. mrcogburn says: Nov 10, 2013 5:02 PM

I guess it’s not so easy that even a caveman can do it, eh Luck?

  22. anygivensundayfan says: Nov 10, 2013 5:08 PM

The inconsistency of the Colts will be their downfall. You never know which team will show up to play: The good team that beat the Broncos, Seahawks and 49ers? Or the bad team that lost ugly to the Chargers and Rams.

  23. cmgww says: Nov 10, 2013 5:08 PM

It starts with the offensive line. Stop blaming Richardson. Emmitt Smith couldn’t run behind that mess. No holes at all. Luck was getting smashed all day…the few times they did use Richardson in the pass game he had some big gain plays. But up front the Colts are a mess, and without Wayne to bail out Luck, they could be in trouble. But don’t come with the “they were lucky to beat SEA, Denver, SF” crap. Those are Ws, boys, fair and square. However, this team needs to get some guys back healthy, and they need to stop playing down to their competition. They step up against teams they aren’t supposed to beat, but lose to teams they should…frustrating.

  24. giantlucksacks says: Nov 10, 2013 5:12 PM

So we gonna actually talk about Andrew Luck stinking up the joint against a crappy team this time?

Too bad he doesn’t get to play against Keenum, Tate, and Wade Phillips every week…

“Captain Comeback” continues to put his team in the hole every week only this time the opposition didn’t totally melt down….lets see how Mr. Lucksack does without Wayne the rest of the year…

  25. realfootballfan says: Nov 10, 2013 5:19 PM

Also, for people who continuously look for the Herschel Walker trade being recreated, I think you have the closest thing here. At least Walker could play. Richardson looked pedestrian when he was with Cleveland who has a much better offensive line than the Colts, and they still gave up a first round pick for him in a draft that’s going to be pretty deep on both sides of the ball by all accounts. Major fail on Grigson’s part.

  28. 8man says: Nov 10, 2013 5:49 PM

Yeah. My first glimpse was when it was 28-0. Who was the home team again?

Maybe they write it off as bad matchups in all three phases of the game and assure their fan base that it will be another four years before this happens again.

  29. friscokid49 says: Nov 10, 2013 5:52 PM

  32. ballboy48 says: Nov 10, 2013 7:04 PM

Holy Cow did the Colts get ripped off on the Richardson trade. Many people thought Cleveland was nuts, now their GM and Banner look like two geniuses! At one point today T. Rich had 3 carries, for -1 yards! RIPPED OFF!

It starts with the offensive line. Stop blaming Richardson. Emmitt Smith couldn’t run behind that mess.

Donald Brown: 5.9 yards per carry

Is he running behind a different offensive line?

How long does TR get to hide behind the bad offensive excuse? Great backs don’t need great lines to make things happen. Backs who need big holes to get yards are what we call around here “average”.

  34. wjmoffatt says: Nov 10, 2013 7:38 PM

I was right on the money when I said the Browns won that trade. Not because Trent is terrible but anyone that watched the Colts could see they had tons of holes in their roster that a few exceptional players hide. Well those holes are finally being shown, they needed that first rounder to go after a guy like Marquis Lee. Now they best hope they can just make another trade to move somewhere to go get Evans, Watkins, or Lee.

  35. wjmoffatt says: Nov 10, 2013 7:41 PM

    @eatfanboy

Did Ray Rice just suddenly become a horrible RB? Was he ever good at any point. Well what about MJD was he ever good?
You’re perception and statements are a complete joke. Maybe instead of looking at stats, try watching the Colts play. Any Colts fan could easily tell you that Donald Brown is going in for plays that are in their passing formation and is isolated on a safety. But Trent is running into a line of scrimmage that is crowded with no holes to be found.

  36. bkh405 says: Nov 10, 2013 8:13 PM

Richardson is a bust. Pure and simple. The age of Top 10 picks for a RB is over, the value is just not there.

  37. jpalughi823 says: Nov 10, 2013 8:15 PM

That was a disgrace. The O line is absolutely pitiful & Luck might get killed before the end of the year. The special teams were laughable….and then there is Richardson. I just figured he was a mess cuz everybody knew he was going to get the ball in Cleveland. That dude is horrid. Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane

Dude you guys won hands down but to go off on a little rant like this is rather stupid. You still have a losing record and won’t make the playoffs, but we will. As another Rams fan posted, this was your Super Bowl. And to say we are falling off like Cowboys and Raiders, really? How did you come up with that assumption? Trent Richardson is not a bust for the Colts.

The Colts are a bust for Trent Richardson.

It was a bad trade thus far… the reason being that it’s a poor fit… not because Richardson is a sub-par player.

All of these writers and fans claiming otherwise have either not watched the Colts games or they don’t fully understand the game of football.

The numbers are obviously atrocious… but the playcalling is worse. They are a pass-first team (rightfully so with Luck) with a poor offensive line. It seems that Pep and Pagano have no idea the type of back they have in Trent Richardson. They talk about how they “need to create opportunities” for him or “get him in space”. What they need to do is show some patience and keep giving him the ball. STOP TAKING HIM OFF THE FIELD SO OFTEN AND ONLY RUNNING HIM IN OBVIOUS RUNNING SITUATIONS AND FORMATIONS! Trent Richardson IS an EVERYDOWN BACK that gets better the more touches you feed him. SO FEED HIM!

The Colts are a good young team that happened to get rolled yesterday by an inspired Rams group. Jeff Fisher can flat-out coach! It happens. They’ll win the AFC South and advance a game or two into the playoffs. That’s progress. In the meantime, my Texans will bumble their way through the season, make a coaching change and hopefully be competitive next year.

    Sincerely,
    Vince Young
