Packers to sign Matt Flynn

Lions Packers Football AP

Down to their third-string quarterback, the Packers are signing a backup who has had some success with them in the past.

Matt Flynn, the veteran who parlayed one outstanding game for Green Bay into one large contract from Seattle, will sign with the Packers, according to Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Flynn had an outstanding game at the end of the 2011 season for the Packers, putting up huge numbers in a win over the Lions. But since then he’s been an utter failure in stints with the Seahawks, Raiders and Bills.

The good news for the Packers is that Flynn knows the offense and has succeeded in it before. It’s also good news that Flynn has a track record of playing well against the Lions, as the Packers’ biggest game in the weeks ahead is their Thanksgiving date in Detroit, which is looking like a must-win if the Packers want to repeat as NFC North champions.

Flynn coming back now and helping the Packers win in Detroit in two weeks is a long shot, but with both Aaron Rodgers and Seneca Wallace injured and the Packers’ season hanging on Scott Tolzien, signing Flynn is a chance the Packers are glad to take.

The Lion killer is back in the fold. The few people still living and working in Detroit have to be trembling in their shows now.

In all honesty, who didnt see this one coming? I am surprised they elected not to sign Flynn earlier. Seneca Wallace was never the answer.

Just outstanding. You can’t make this up. I wonder if the Packers asked for a Discount double-check before working his deal.

Flynn had more than one outstanding game for the Packers. He started and played the full game against the Pats, the week after Rodgers had a concussion against the Lions on Thanksgiving Day. I’m not sure of all the details, but the Pack almost won in NE. I think it was in 2009.

  21. capn0bvious says: Nov 11, 2013 7:39 PM

I had a feeling they would. Well, he got paid pretty well by Seattle for nothing, so whatever. He got millions for one good game, and he’s still in the league, so good for him.

    Hardly reason to celebrate.

Sure, Flynn turned out to be a good back-up guy a couple years ago, but does he still have enough fire left in him to be competitive? He got paid, and for most guys, nothing else matters.

I am more excited to see what Tolzien can do with a weeks work at practice. The Giants will be a good test for Tolzien. The Giants are about average in Defense, but they give up 27 a game.

Tolzien now has something to play for. There is someone on the bench to take his place, that usually brings out the best in players who want to get paid.

  61. whatjusthapped says: Nov 11, 2013 8:46 PM

Reality check, Matt Flynn will never see the field because if he does, it will mean that Tolzien has been knocked out of a game.

The Packers will have to place Wallace on IR and they are moving forward for the next 3 games with Tolzien as the starter. The minute Rodgers is ready to play, Matt Flynn will be cut.

But it is a smart move in the sense that if Flynn does play, he already knows the system and that is not true of any of the other journey men QB’s the Packers might have signed.

Either these QBs keep us in the playoff race and Rodgers comes back and wins a Super Bowl, or the Packers miss the playoffs, get a top 20 pick that will bolster an already top 5 NFL team, and the Packers win 3 or 4 super bowls.

    Either way, I’m happy.

  75. johnnyprc says: Nov 11, 2013 10:19 PM

As a Seahawk fan, I hope Matt does well – he seems like a good guy. However, i doubt it. Seeing both Wallace and Flynn play, you are better off with Wallace.

  76. seaeagle707 says: Nov 11, 2013 10:24 PM

He came to Seatown, to be the highest paid clipboard holder in the league. Then he went to Oakland to do ???? Onto Buffalo to do ???? What I’d most like to see the Mighty Flynn do, at least once, is play a game of football. Not sorry that RW beat him out at the Clink, but the curiosity!!!! Can MF actually be a decent QB? Does anyone actually know?

I knew Seneca wouldn’t be a good fit in GB. The guy is too indecisive in the pocket. That he isn’t the “most sacked QB of all time” is truly a miracle.

  77. doggeatdogg says: Nov 11, 2013 10:34 PM

Tolzien has been with the Pack all year and hasn’t been able to unseat Wallace for the backup spot.

Obviously the great TT felt that Wallace was better than Flynn.

What makes you think that a guy with a bad elbow is going to make Tolzien try and compete any harder than he has prior to Flynn’s signing today?

    Fair enough but…

    1) Flynn hasn’t started yet.

    2) The Packers have started different QBs due to injuries. The Vikings have done it because their QBs suck!!

Even an average team can go 2-5 with a backup QB. By the time Rodgers gets back the Packers will be 5-8, effectively eliminated. Oh, but they’ll get a top 20 draft pick. With that, draft genius Ted Thompson will draft another bust like Datone Jones, subsequently fielding a lower echelon defense that will ultimately wasted their talented 30 year old franchise quarterback yet again.

well , Flynn’s arm and elbow must be ok otherwise TT wouldn’t sign him. this means they won’t rush Rodgers back for the Lions game . now the Packers QB problems are solved . TT will draft a QB next season that they can groom to be a top notch #2 guy. I hope they draft AJ McCarron . he is a winner. under McCarthy’s mentoring he can be a stud back up for 4 yrs and some day replace Rodgers.

  94. nodindenver says: Nov 12, 2013 12:27 AM

Packers should have been holding weekly tryouts since camp after they kicked the tires of VY and knew they had to settle for SW. They got themselves into this position and will miss the playoffs as a result!! In today’s NFL where some teams are on their third or fourth starter, teams have to be set at #2 and they were asleep at the wheel.

You Viqueen fans do realize that Rodgers isn’t dead right. All this talk about having similar QB situations is ridiculous, Rodgers will eventually get healthy and the Vikings will still be stuck with what they have at QB, nothing.

I know most Queens fans have hope that your team will draft a QB next year in the first round but the last time they did that you ended up with Christian Ponder. So good luck with the QB search because your gonna need it.

Flynn is home where he belongs. He was never a full time NFL QB, and he proved it. He could not make it through two training camps getting all the snaps as the starter without his arm getting tired and needing rest. He has limited arm strength as it is, and when asked to carry the full load he just does not have it. Even the Packers thought he had some type of injury after watching film of him with the hawks and the raiders.

As a back up, he is a smart efficient QB who can come in and keep a game close or win one. However, he will never be a teams #1 QB again, unless fate enters in. I hope he proves me wrong.

Flynn sure is going the long way around to end up in Jacksonville.

Which Flynn will show up? The hero from before or the wimpy armed, check down guy of the past few seasons?
