Ravens will go with hot hand at running back

In a plot line that’s become all too familiar to the Ravens this year, running back Ray Rice had a bad day on Sunday.

Rice ran 18 times for 30 yards, lowering his average to 2.5 yards per carry on the season and leading coach John Harbaugh to say Monday that he thought Rice’s hip is still troubling him. Rice missed one game earlier this year with a hip flexor injury, but declared himself healthy and back to his old self coming out of the team’s bye week. Whether it is injury, poor blocking or some combination of factors, Rice’s lack of productivity is opening the door for Bernard Pierce to grab a bigger share of the workload.

“Both of those guys are going to get a large number of carries, and I think whichever guy is playing better should get more carries as we go forward,” Harbaugh said, via the team’s website. “Both of those guys have to play for us and play well. You can’t have one back carrying the ball 35 times these days. We don’t need to do that; we think we’ve got two very good backs.”

Pierce hasn’t exactly been forcing the issue as he’s averaging just 2.8 yards per carry himself while battling a hamstring injury, but the Ravens aren’t really in a position to be choosy. They need their offense to get better if they are going to make a playoff run and that means looking under every rock for help.

Well Ray Rice, it was fun while it lasted. Thanks for everything you’ve done here in Bmore.

lol… what hot hand? must mean the defense’s sweaty palms. ..

Just start Bernard Scott and call it a damn day!

What if neither have a “hot hand”? And can we give Bernard Scott a chance? He juuuuuust may give us a spark.

  6. youknowngata says: Nov 11, 2013 6:21 PM

    Bring back Ricky Williams!

  7. joemammy says: Nov 11, 2013 6:21 PM

They had better find someone to run the ball. The Ravens aren’t going anywhere with Flacco slinging it around like a panicky kid.

  8. raynman49 says: Nov 11, 2013 6:29 PM

I’m shocked that Ray Rice can’t see those HUGE holes the o-line opens up for him! Put the blame where it belongs.

  9. jimjim84 says: Nov 11, 2013 6:30 PM

who exactly is our “hot hand”? The guy avg. 2.8 yds/carry? wow we got problems

  10. tedmurph says: Nov 11, 2013 6:46 PM

Pierce really pushed the envelope on 4 yrds/carry. That is a big upgrade. Watch out AP.

  11. bgibson8708 says: Nov 11, 2013 6:48 PM

If you average 3 ypc or less thats an indication of line issues. Rice and Pierce have both shown themselves to be good backs.

  12. watermelon1 says: Nov 11, 2013 6:49 PM

Yeah right. I’ll believe this when I see it. Harbaugh has always picked favorites and will stick with them no matter how badly they are playing.

Pierce is obviously the better runner. Better blocker. I’d love to see what he can do with a full game of starter-type carries.

  13. ravanator says: Nov 11, 2013 6:56 PM

We don’t even need to run the ball. Let Flacco (Superbowl MVP) do his thing and pass all three downs. Ravens still on the path to repeat with Flacco leading us.

  14. britishraven says: Nov 11, 2013 7:03 PM

Our O line is absolutely pathetic at run blocking. On almost every run play 1 or 2 D linemen are in the backfield almost as the ball is snapped. Barry Sanders wouldn’t average 3 ypc behind this joke

  15. beltlessbuckler says: Nov 11, 2013 7:09 PM

Bengals fan here. Congrats on win yesterday. Bernard Scott is fun to watch but won’t last two games, can withstand the hits in the NFL. Wish him a little luck though. Though you beat us, we Fear the Ravens Nevermore!!

Ray is going to change his number from 27 to 2.7

Has coach Castillo, run game coordinator, offered any explanation?

Boy, I’m sure going to miss him doing the bicep flex in the end zone when he scores a TD.

Now, THAT is smart, and funny. Well played, sir.

  24. ravenswhat says: Nov 11, 2013 8:06 PM

Still hilarious that people think Andy Dalton is winning the AFC North.

Ravens will smack Andy in Cinci to win the division.

Joe wins big games, Andy finds ways to lose them. It’s that simple.

  25. natijim235 says: Nov 11, 2013 8:29 PM

    they both suck this year

  26. infectorman says: Nov 11, 2013 8:30 PM

    Whats wrong?

Baltimore has the Best QB in the league!

Their like 7-2 and on their way to another deep run in the playoffs. St Ray moved on and and old Ed-grey beard- Reed is gone and “in Ozzie we trust”, right?

Sing it with me Baltimorians! Sing It!
    In Ozzie we trust!

Jump Ball Joe got all his money and the team SUX!!!!
    Fluke SB win last year

  27. vincentbojackson says: Nov 11, 2013 8:42 PM

Look for Rice to shut the critics up and have a breakout game next week. I’m thinking 35-40 yards on 25 carries.

  28. blahblahblah1313 says: Nov 11, 2013 9:00 PM

Both are averaging less than 3 yds a carry. Couldn’t be an OL problem could it?

  29. steelcurtainn says: Nov 11, 2013 9:29 PM

Everyone knew Baltimore was going to have a down season. No surprises here. Flacco is average and way overrated.

  30. GenXJay says: Nov 11, 2013 9:59 PM

Why would he consider switching qbs?
Foles really hasn’t been put to the test yet.

    Fluke SB win last year

I’m pretty sure ANY team’s fans would take the same “fluke” SB win every time. Any SB winning season is a good one, fluke or not. Rings don’t lie. Ask any (obnoxious, with good reason) Steelers fan.

  32. jimmyp410 says: Nov 11, 2013 11:21 PM

I was pissed when they cut Rainey before the season started cuz even in preseason he was the only back having huge success. I’m a die hard ravens fan for better or worse but I think there was some pretty glaring mistakes made this year, uncharacteristically. Not only with personell but changing line schemes is just stupid when your having nothin but success before it. With Ozzie’s track record, u can’t help but blame Harbs for alot of the problems. We need to go back to what works ASAP!

  33. bunkslurpscrabmustard says: Nov 12, 2013 8:32 AM

Are you kidding me?? It’s this zone blocking scheme that they’re running with the o-line. I don’t care what you say about Ray, the holes are not there. The run game for O-lineman is about beating and punishing the man across from you straight up man on man all day long and beating him til his has nothing left and no pride. Blaming it on Ray’s health is b.s. Harbaugh and you know it.

  34. crownofthehelmet says: Nov 12, 2013 9:51 AM

Where did all the talk go from homers about Rice and Pierce being the best RB tandem in the league. I guess you should have clarified by saying “behind the blocking of McKinnie”.

  35. annapterp says: Nov 12, 2013 10:02 AM

I’ve been saying all year that either there is something wrong with Ray Rice, or he’s hit the 5 year running back wall. Hard to say though given that the Oline is playing so bad this year. Flacco has performed ok when he’s had time but rarely has the time. Pierce should get more carries but he’s been hurt too. Against Cincy it was obvious that Pierce was having more success and should have had more carries. It just seems like Rice has no explosion and even when he’s in open space he can’t make anyone miss or break tackles like he used to. I don’t know the salary cap implications but he may be gone for money reasons at the end of the year.

All the haters here. Predicting the Ravens season over, with 7 games to go. You may look like fools again. You’d think you would learn from last year.
