Report: John Skelton to work out for Packers

AP

The Packers, who were down to one healthy quarterback on Sunday vs. Philadelphia, will work out veteran passer John Skelton, Lauren Magiera of WAOW-TV in Wausau, Wisconsin reported on Monday.

Skelton, 25, was most recently with the 49ers, who waived him on Oct. 9 after a week’s stint in San Francisco. Skelton also spent about five months with the Bengals before being let go after the 2013 preseason.

Scott Tolzien, who played the bulk of the Packers’ 27-13 loss to the Eagles, will start next week’s game at the Giants. However, it’s unclear who will back him up. Seneca Wallace, who started Sunday’s game, suffered a groin injury in the first quarter, and his status for next week is uncertain.

Skelton started 17 regular-season games with the Cardinals from 2009 through 2011. For his career, he’s completed 320-of-602 passes for 3,707 yards with 15 TDs and 25 interceptions.

  1. Sometimes it amazes me how these G.M.’s stay employed.

Why wouldn’t GB check out David Carr??? Whatever 49th option they sign to backup Tolzien isn’t gonna make a difference. Soooooooo….why not sign the one who at least has intimate knowledge of your opponent??

    You’re welcome Thompson.

  2. So are they going to make calls to Joe Montana and Steve Young eventually? Little bit of a 49ers trend going…

And, side note to all of the “look how far they’ve fallen” geniuses out there: Yes. It’s a shambles without Aaron Rodgers. And the Saints would be crap without Drew Brees, and the Broncos without Manning, etc. etc. etc. Saying that a team hits a major skid after losing a top-tier QB doesn’t make you a brilliant analyst. Why don’t you go outside and start proclaiming that the sky is blue? SMH.

  3. Skelton has accuracy problems, but he also spent his whole career in AZ behind the worst O-Line in the league, by far. There are worse choices (maybe Seneca Wallace??).

  4. The Packers need to be careful. If they find someone that plays well, Rodgers will get his feelings hurt and call his mom. Crazy how Favre can play though injuries, but Rodgers has to sit out for small injuries! Favre was 10 times the tough quarterback Rodgers will ever be.

  5. Don’t worry. I’ve been assured that the previous championships from last century will be on the field this week to help the packers get a win. Wait…what…. Those championships don’t amount to squat today!? Oh man, the packers are screwed!

  6. not sure how zwiz69 can say a broken collar bone is a small injury, he’d be in a wheel chair I’m sure, but Skelton stinks, forget him. Why not matt Flynn??

  7. Rodgers went to Cal Berkely. that’s like an Ivy league school . Favre is not as cerebral as Rodgers and Rodgers is the closest QB in the NFL to Joe Montana. different types of QB’s and personalities.

  8. LOL – remember when “In Ted We Trust” and “Next Man Up” were used with pride? What happened to that?

  9. @zwiz69 A broken collarbone is not a small injury. It’s not like he’s out with a hangnail injury. And, yesterday was only the second start missed by Rodgers since he became the starter.

  10. Skelton’s gonna swoop in, take the starting job, and not look back. Rodgers will be traded in the off season for a bag of Funyuns.

Skelton has a big arm . he can throw the bomb . worth keeping on the developmental squad and learning in McCarthy’s QB camps.

    Are you serious?

Besides Rodgers – name me one QB that has been in McCarthy’s QB development squad in Green Bay that is even on an NFL roster today – besides Tolzien?

The Packers have a horrible track record with all the other QB’s that have been on the Packers during the MM & TT era.

Names like Brian Brohm, Ingle Martin, Graham Harrell, BJ Coleman, Craig Nall and Matt Flynn are what you have to choose from…

    _______

Because David Carr is still employed by the Giants? Maybe being an NFL GM is harder than you thought.

    ______________

When did they move California up to the NE corner of the United States?

The Ivy League consist of the following schools:

Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University.

  14. For those asking why don’t the Packers sign such and such guy, let’s be honest. The crop of FA QBs isn’t anything to write home about. You can prefer one guy over another but end of day if a guy had a ton to offer he’d already have a job by now.

  15. Next man up!

At least Rodgers has a ring to hold onto. Adrian has wasted his whole career. He missed out on his only chance when Brett threw the game away. Wait, why should they want Favre back again?

  16. Ted Thompson the Genius:

David Carr is not a Giant. Lost his spot in the preseason to Curtis Painter. Know the facts before you start trashing people.

  17. I’m betting a 100 bucks there is an old drunk on a WI bar stool that may just get a start for the Pack at QB …any takers??

—————————————————————————————————————————————————— pretty hard to ( next man up after your starting qb) then again if your a viking fan a practice squad qb would be an upgrade right? btw contra what happened to the vikings winning the superbowl this year? you were one of the people posting it on this site after the draft and the signing of greg jennings what happened?

  19. Vince Young isn’t an accurate passer, more like Tebow, but a very good and big athlete. MM would have to change his offense to use him and he wont do that. But I haven’t heard anything about him being a bad guy. I will say that Don Shula got into the playoffs with Tom Matte who was a running back and Tebow got the Broncos there so it can be done.

  20. I have to correct my earlier posts. Matt Flynn is now on an NFL roster. That would be the Packers…

Is this team 3 or 4 this season?

  21. While Skelton was with the Bengals, he had the best stats in the preseason games over Dalton and Johnson, even while he was learning to play a West Coast offense for the first time. Gruden cut Skelton because he was still learning the WCO, he wanted Johnson around to play the wildcat, and because Johnson has been a pet project of his since Johnson was drafted by Tampa Bay.

Away for the horrible Cards offensive line, Skelton looked real good behind the Bengals second team offensive line.

Still haven’t heard the truth of the 49er signing fiasco where they waived Skelton (in order to sign newly cut BJ Daniels) after signing him one week earlier with Harbaugh gushing over Skelton’s experience and potential.

At least the Packers are playing musical QBs due to injury. The Vikings are doing it because theirs all suck. You guys will be bottom feeders for the foreseeable future.
