Ross comments on advisory group imply Philbin will be back in 2014

The Monday comments from Dolphins owner Stephen Ross may have been bad news for G.M. Jeff Ireland.  But they’re apparently good news for coach Joe Philbin.

The changes Ross contemplates for his team will occur with the advice of an independent advisory panel.  Ross has identified the first four members of the group:  Hall of Fame head coach Don Shula, former Buccaneers and Colts coach Tony Dungy, Hall of Fame Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino, Hall of Fame running back Curtis Martin, and former Dolphins defensive end/linebacker Jason Taylor.

Ross added in a statement released by the team that coach Joe Philbin and others will be part of the process.  Ross also said the project will commence after the season.

That strongly implies that Philbin will be back in 2014.

While that conclusion could be premature given the indepedent investigation to be conducted by Ted Wells, it would be foolish to assume that the Dolphins haven’t conducted their own private review of the situation during the past two weeks.  By including Philbin within a group that won’t even start its work until the 2013 regular season end, Ross essentially has concluded that Philbin will survive this mess.

Gotta laugh at how when Dungee gave his opinion about this a while back, several people screamed about how irrelevant he is and his opinion doesn’t matter….

Then he gets put on the advisory board.

    Ouch.

The advisory group is solid. Make them permanent and assign them Draft Day authority.

And fire Philbin…not because of BullyGate but because ya can’t lead men with the demeanor of a basset hound.

Philbin can be a good coach if he has a GREAT GM who will naturally fill the team around him and oversee a few things that are Joe’s weaknesses. And then he could do a fine job of representing the integrity that Miami would like to be known for.

I don’t know how old Don Shula is now but he was 65 when the Dolphins had the perfect season in 1972.

Good. He shouldn’t be fired for this silliness.

    Born January 4, 1930…

He would have been 42.. currently 87 nearing 88.

  8. amgdds says: Nov 11, 2013 9:07 PM

Haha. Dan Marino on the ethics advisory board. Haha

  9. finfan79 says: Nov 11, 2013 9:34 PM

Wow, math is not a strength with this group. Born 1930 would make Shula 83.

Finally he is listening to other people other than Ireland who got his golden parachute this summer because he is not coming back come January 2014. It sounds like was domineering over Philbin especially with Ross’s absence in Miami. Most likely Phlbin told Ross it’s him or me next year and Ross made a decision.

I think Shula has made his contributions and it’s time to let the old man rest. I think he should bow down and name his replacement. There are many good football people. But no Bill Parcells please.

Ross states that he is appalled at the situation with Incognito. He should also be appall at his team performance!

This whole thing is one big joke. Martin is a joke as a player.

  13. wryly1 says: Nov 11, 2013 11:18 PM

Ross is saying that now because he’s going to let Philbin finish the season before he gets axed. Ireland’s replacement isn’t keeping Philbin. To think otherwise would be Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny and Santa Claus stuff.

  14. craniator says: Nov 11, 2013 11:45 PM

Philbin absolutely deserves to be back , and to finish the entire contract he signed nearly two years ago , in my opinion.
Although drafting Martin was , in hindsight , a mistake (assuming Joe had input in that decision) , he’s improved the culture of the team , and I believe it will eventually be proven that this incident was an isolated case.

After watching the game tonight, it’s obvious the team is distracted by all this, to say the least. I hate to say it, but it’s time to put a fork in Philbin AND Ireland… Ireland shouda gone a long time ago, but that’s just me, and I hate to see Philbin leave. But regardless of WHAT happened, to the public IT DID happen so now the ‘Fins gotta do something about this and move on to try to win back their fan base and maybe even the season while it’s still salvageable (4-5 ain’t bad, folks)…

  16. doctorrustbelt says: Nov 12, 2013 12:06 AM

    I Told Ya.

If you re-watch Miami Hard Knocks…. you can see the locker room leadership was a problem even before Philbin got rid of Jake Long and Reggie Bush.

  17. doctorrustbelt says: Nov 12, 2013 12:07 AM

With low character individual like incognito and pouncey in the locker room…. what do you expect from your team?!?

  18. osiris33 says: Nov 12, 2013 1:00 AM

Clueless Joe has got to go…

  19. drewzducks says: Nov 12, 2013 2:07 AM

Yes vaflimflam, the Dolphins are one big joke and now, apparently, the worst team in the state of Florida. At least you have the steady hand of Elmer J. Fudd patrolling the sidelines.

  20. bledee10 says: Nov 12, 2013 2:26 AM

So keeping Philbin and not Ireland implies he will bring in a new GM who won’t get to hire “his guy” at HC. Good luck with that! Just pencil in the Dolphins as an also-ran in 2014.

I am proud to say I’m born and raised in Pittsburgh. An absolute beautiful city that has grow old leaps and bounds in the last 20 years and continues too. And I can regards to football is steeped I get tradition. Alot of greats came from Pittsburgh. Including 3 out of the 5 people that were named on that panel. I hope they can help right the ship on Miami. Another organization w great tradition. I always enjoy seeing teams get back to the top. Ex: KC. Great tradition there as well. With an amazing fanbase. Lol the way the last season n this has gone for my Steelers and I got a feeling maybe the next couple..it’ll be nice to see them get back to competing on the level I’ve been spolied by.

    Peace and blessings all

Clearly Ross has no clue whatsoever about being an NFL owner. No other owner in this situation would be so quick to back his coach. Hopefully these advisers with be completely honest with him about gutting the franchise, and hopefully he will listen.

  23. dolphincritic says: Nov 12, 2013 9:50 AM

Mr. Ross’s statements alleging a culture committee constitutes a smoke screen.
He was groping for household names. Curtis Martin! Ross probably thinks he played for the Dolphins.

Ross needs to fire Ireland and name Nat Moore as the interim GM. Have Philbin fird Sherman and take over the offense himself. Fire the O-line coach too.

You czn fire Philbin Ftef ghe NFL revealls his lies and bad judgement.

  24. realfootballfan says: Nov 12, 2013 11:05 AM

He might want to dump Mike Sherman and get a real offensive coordinator if he does survive this.
