Ed Reed got $5 million for five starts

Reed

It’s been a good year for Ed Reed. (Except for, you know, the hip surgery.)

Reed won a Super Bowl with the Ravens. He went to the White House. President Obama mentioned Reed’s name, even though he was simply pointing out his gray hair.

And Reed has now received $5 million for five total starts with the Texans.

Specifically, Reed pocketed a $2 million signing bonus, a $2 million guaranteed salary advance, and a $1 million guaranteed salary for 2013. (He also picked up another $437,500 in per-game roster bonuses.)

The only caveat for Reed is that he now has two tickets to the waiver wire. If someone claims his contract, he’ll still get the balance of the base salary that he’d get if no one claims his contract. (That said, he’ll still get an extra $62,500 for each game on which he makes it to the active 46-man roster with a new team.)

The next question is whether anyone will claim his contract. Based on what we’ve seen from his this year, the other 31 teams possibly will decide that he should have retired after finally getting to paradise.
