Giants toning down the talk now that they’re winning

When the Giants were 0-6, they were full of confidence.

Maybe because they were 0-6, they were trying to talk themselves into it.

But after winning three straight, they’re amazingly within a game and a half of first place in the NFC East, and have dialed back on the rhetoric.

“It’s smart,” Tom Coughlin said, via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. “It’s one game at a time. Where are you? You’re right where you are. And obviously you keep your dreams alive, but you focus on the task at hand.

“That’s, I hope, what we’re doing.”

At 0-4, outspoken safety Antrel Rolle was the one who declared: “I believe we can go 12-0 from this point on.”

Now, he says they’re not worried about the division title, focusing on a narrower field.

“I do what I have to do and I say what I have to say,” Rolle said. “That’s the best way I can tell you. Like I say, we’re 3-6. If we start looking ahead of ourselves, we’re going to find ourselves behind. One game at a time. That’s our only approach at the moment.”

“I wouldn’t say necessarily we’re back in it,” defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins added to the chorus. “But we’re taking steps. We’ve got some positives here. We have a little momentum going for ourselves right now. But there’s still a long way to go to the point where we’ll be back. We can’t get too anxious now because we’re close.”

But they can get quiet, and hope people forget about them again.
