Jumbotron highlight nearly led Bucs to scrap pass to Donald Penn

The Buccaneers got on the scoreboard on Monday night with a trick play pass to left tackle Donald Penn. But a highlight reel displayed on the scoreboard nearly caused the Bucs to call the play off.

Just before the Penn touchdown, there was a long delay because Buccaneers running back Mike James suffered an ankle injury and was getting medical attention. During that delay, the Buccaneers stadium staff decided to honor Penn for starting 100 consecutive games by playing a highlight reel on the Jumbotron. One problem: That highlight reel included video of a previous Penn touchdown on the same tackle eligible trick play that the Buccaneers were planning to run.

Bucs coach Greg Schiano said today that he was stunned to look up and see the Jumbotron showing the exact trick play that the Bucs were about to run, right there for all of the Dolphins’ players and coaches to see.

We’d already called the play when Mike goes down,’’ Schiano said, via the Tampa Tribune. “During that stoppage, I knew we were going to recognize Donald. . . . I was great with that, but then [quarterbacks coach] John McNulty says, ‘They’re playing it on the board.’”

Schiano said the coaches began debating whether they could still run the play, or whether the Jumbotron had just given it away to the Dolphins. In the end, they decided to go with it.

“The conversation on the headset, you wouldn’t believe it,’’ Schiano said. “You can’t make this stuff up. But cooler minds prevailed. One of our coaches said we can’t let the Jumbotron make our decisions.’’

Penn said he would’ve been disappointed if they had to call it off.

“I’ve been lobbying for the play all year and they finally put it in,’’ said Penn. “I was a little nervous because they showed me on the big screen, but it was a great pass.’’

And a great catch, and a great call — even if it was a call that the Jumbotron nearly caused the Bucs to scrap.

Oh wow and yeah you have to stick with the call, how can you not? Perfect timing!

    Now that is funny!!!

It’s always something with the Bucs, even when the direct team isn’t involved.

Well it’s a good thing Schiano has other coaches there to tell him how to run his team. If he let’s that same coach make all the calls he might still be a head coach next year.

Keeping make fun of the Bucs. Why not, it’s easy and you don’t have to put much thought into it.

Pay no attention to the fact that in the last two weeks they’ve taken the Seahawks to OT in Seattle and gotten their first win. Or that they held New Orleans to 16 points. Or that they should have won opening day but for a very questionable penalty.

I’m not saying they are a good football team, they’re not. But they certainly aren’t playing now (and in reality haven’t played most of the season) like the national joke everyone makes them out to be. There are many “good” NFL teams that have much worse losses on their records than any the Bucs have this year.

I’m not a Bucs fan, but watching the game against Seattle last week and last night, I believe there are a few teams that have better records that are not as good as they are.

Everyone else realizes how stupid it would be for an opposing team to start game planing based on replays shown on a jumbotron right? No wonder Schiano is so terrible. Still a funny story though.

“Wait Philbin! Don’t call that defense. Look at the jumbotron. Double Penn!”

  7. Go-Hawks! says: Nov 12, 2013 7:43 PM

I would be more incline to believe that Schiano saw the play on the Jumbotron and THEN decided to run the play.

He probably wasn’t thinking about the trick play until he saw it and thought “hey, let’s give THAT a try”

  8. finsguy says: Nov 12, 2013 7:46 PM

You probably could have told Philbin you were going to runt the play and they wouldn’t have been able to stop it.

I’m happy that Schiano got the win. Its about time that these players realize they are underachieving and stop listening to the media telling them it is all Schiano’s fault. You sucked for Raheem Morris when he treated you like men because you couldn’t handle it. Schiano will lighten up once he realizes who he can and cannot trust.

Stop listening to the anti-Schiano media in Tampa. There is a reason they are writing and doing radio in this Mickey Mouse market.

I think it’s safe to say that even a jumbotron can outcoach schiano.

Hopefully after Penn “dunked” the ball (kinda) over the goalpost, Tony Gonzalez finally realized that it’s not really that impressive and will stop doing it.

That’s a classic. Glad Tampa won. They’ll beat the Falcons Sunday. I love it!

It was Y-hurricane, the play Sapp scored on before.

Miami’s players were not watching jumbotron they were to busy insulting and harassing each other.

  17. primemover1 says: Nov 12, 2013 9:24 PM

Jumbotron? How old are you? 70?

  18. sportsguy3434 says: Nov 12, 2013 10:02 PM

Maybe they could show the opposing teams play calling on the jumbotron…oh wait they don’t do that anymore. Maybe the Dolphins could do it and call it jumbogate to change the subject.

  19. ghjjf says: Nov 12, 2013 10:20 PM

How comical, the Dolphins get to watch the play that is about to be run and they can’t stop it. Meanwhile, the Dolphins offense continues to use “Go Go” at the snap for a running play and “Go” for a pass play, giving opposing defenses a heads up of the play they are running.

  20. edgerules says: Nov 12, 2013 10:37 PM

Wow. The Dolphins are that bad they lose to both the then 0-8 Bucs, but they lost to a Jumbotron.

  21. 69finfan says: Nov 12, 2013 10:52 PM

thereyougo2; now that’s funny, I don’t care who you are.

  22. demonspank says: Nov 13, 2013 12:20 AM

Well, I bet the Jumbotron also showed replays of Penn pass and run blocking.

Oh no! They know all the possible plans! Quick, take a knee or kick a field goal!

  23. bcgreg says: Nov 13, 2013 12:28 AM

I hate when a player is running down the field looking at the Jumbotron to see how close the opponent is to catching him. The Jumbotron should not be allowed to show the game in live action. Replays, yes. Live action, no. I thought you weren’t allowed to watch in game film, yet it happens every week with the Jumbotron.

  24. bluestar4ever says: Nov 13, 2013 6:07 AM

Wouldn’t playing it on the Jumbotron make it more likely to succeed? There’s no way the Dolphins would think they’re going to run something they just showed on the big screen. It’s the perfect trick!

They will improve once the players start being accountable for the losses instead of listening to these Tampa Bay hacks blame Schiano. They aren’t in as bad of shape as that record would indicate. If Buc fans would watch a game or two they would realize that, but instead they watch ESPN highlights and listen to the crappiest talk radio market in the country to form their opinions.
