Kyle Williams lands in Kansas City

Quarterback Alex Smith and wide receiver A.J. Jenkins aren’t the only former 49ers on the Chiefs offense anymore.

Wide receiver Kyle Williams is the latest to make the move from San Francisco to Kansas City. Williams was waived by the 49ers on Tuesday and claimed by the Chiefs on Wednesday. Williams broke the news himself via Twitter.

Williams got a lot of time on the 49ers offense this season, but didn’t do all that much with it. He had 12 catches for 113 yards and wasn’t doing much better as either a punt or kickoff returner.

It’s unclear what role the Chiefs would have in mind for Williams, but he could wind up taking the roster spot of lightly used wide receiver Chad Hall. Dexter McCluster is a good punt returner and Quintin Demps is averaging more than 29 yards per kickoff return, so there doesn’t seem to be a pressing need at either of those spots, although McCluster was limited by an ankle injury at Wednesday’s practice.
