Marcus Lattimore to begin practicing next week

Marcus Lattimore AP

The 49ers, with a wealth of draft picks, were able to use one on former South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore knowing he might not help them this year.

And while returning to a game after his horrific college knee injury is still a long shot, he’s at least getting on the practice field.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, Lattimore will begin practicing next week. He was placed on the non-football injury list at the beginning of the year, and the 49ers didn’t expect anything from him this season.

If nothing else, some football-like action serves as a carrot for his rehab, giving him a target to shoot for. The 49ers already had more backs than they could keep happy with the action they’re getting, so it’s not as if he’s a need.

Frank Gore’s eventual replacement in San Fran. This guy has got sick talent.

With such a stacked RB corp, it seems like either LaMichael James or Lattimore may be used as trade bait this offseason.

i’ll bet half my assets he doesn’t play 5 seasons and I would probably go as low as 3

If you’re so stacked at RB why do your coaches keep feeding the bust that is your QB?

Now all frisco needs is a quarterback.

Half of nothing is still nothing. Now go outside and let the adults talk about this matter.

Marcus Lattimore was just nasty in college. In my opinion, he would’ve been the best back to come out since A.P. Unfortunately I don’t think he’s gonna have much of an NFL career. Christine Michael, on the other hand, is going to be a top 5 back in the league 2 years from now when Marshawn is gone.

It takes a special player to eventually replace The Great Frank Gore. 21 isn’t anywhere near done… The few in a generation back that is great into his 30s. If you wanna see an incredible list, check the RBs that came and gone that people thought were gunna be great since Gore was drafted in 05. FRANK GORE FOR HOF!!!

Sad story, he would have been a 1st round pick before his two injuries. Hope he makes it back next year.

Good to hear, but keep him on the bench till next year and let him keep getting that knee stronger and stronger

    Here he comes!

Gore IS a great back. But they do tend to fall of a cliff fast after 30. Might not be til 32 or whatever for him though, but it will come fast.

Father Time is undefeated, but Gore has had a very good career.

I think it is funny that there are several parallels with Frank and Marcus. Both played for good colleges, both ooze talent but had really bad injuries before entering the NFL. If Marcus could emulate any RB in the league, why not Frank Gore? You could do a lot worse than #21.
