Delanie Walker: Erik Walden should have been ejected for head butt

The 15-yard penalty on Colts linebacker Erik Walden for ripping off Titans tight end Delanie Walker’s helmet and delivering a head butt was not enough to satisfy Walker. Instead, Walker thinks it should have resulted in an ejection.

“What got him riled up? I was whupping his butt, that’s what happened, and the cat couldn’t take it when he was getting whupped,’’ Walker told Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean after the game. “He got frustrated, and he should have been ejected for what he did. That’s bush league and that’s the type of stuff we don’t need in this league.”

Walker was not penalized even though he responded to Walden’s head butt with a punch.

“I threw a punch at him; I’m not going to lie about that. It’s on film,’’ Walker said. “But that was just a reaction. You head butt me in the face because I am beating you? C’mon.”

Walker said Walden better be ready when the two teams meet again.

“I whupped on him the whole game, and I’m going to whup on him again in two weeks,’’ Walker said. “We are not cool. That type of stuff doesn’t belong in the NFL.”

Aside from the incident with Walden, Walker had an excellent game, catching all 10 of the passes thrown to him for 91 yards and a touchdown.

  1. 100% agree. Can you imagine if this was a player with a previous reputation for after the play activities (I’m not going to say his name because that witch hunt has died down over the last few weeks)? It would be a media feast; all the articles from these holier than though sports writers about how he’s an awful human being, how he needs to be suspended for the rest of the season, how he’s a dirty player, that he should get fined a million dollars, etc… The nfl is extremely inconsistent, and they definitely got this one wrong.

  2. Walker is right. That’s bush league as hell and there is no place for that. It’s one thing to headbutt a guy wearing a helmet but a guy without one because you ripped it off?? What a p@$$y move Walden. That’s not how I want my Colts to play.

  3. What I saw was walker marching 2 yards over to Walden to get in his face. He should have been looking for his helmet instead of taunting an opposing player. It also appears that Walden had a decent game while her wasn’t being wupped on

  4. He’s right. He was being blocked into oblivion on that play, cleanly I might add. Then he inexplicably rips his helmet off & as Walker gets in his face like, “What the hell?” he headbutts him. Punkish nonsense.

I’d take Walker in that fight too. Have you seen his head? Built like a cinder block.

  5. Every Titans fan can tell you how the refs don’t favor the Titans at home.

And I don’t care about individual fights…..did you win the game or not?

It’s WAY past time for a serious house cleaning for the Titans.

  6. Sorry, but I have no sympathy for him. You want to be a tough guy and stick your unprotected skull in the face of a guy with his helmet on, you get headbutted.

  7. Walden make some big plays for the Colts in the 2nd half. Makes me wonder if he had not been in the game what would have happened. Maybe he wont even be in the game in 2 weeks…think about that.

  8. I’m a diehard Colts fan, but I’m not a homer. Walker is right. Walden SHOULD have been ejected for that. That was classless and immature.

  9. Pretty clear that the level of officiating in the NFL continues at a suspect level.

While I’m not a big fan of the intrusion and delay of replay, the college game seems to move pretty swiftly in checking out suspect plays and correcting calls in an expeditious manner.

The NFL rule book is getting too complex and needs to be simplified and get out all the IF, THEN, ELSE crap. That would be a good investment by the competition committee!

  10. As a Colts fan – I agree 110% – he should have been tossed. That is not the Colts style or culture and reflects poorly on the rest of the team.

You do realize that it was Walden who violently ripped Walker’s helmet off, right?

  12. The worst way to officiate the NFL is through inconsistency. I’ve seen some major penalties result in slaps on the wrist and juvenile acts brought down by the iron fist.

JordanWalden should have been immediately ejected and fined for his actions, plain and simple. This is not the NHL, these guys have the ability to hit each other every play, but keep it within the rules.

Delanie Walker was right for punching him, nine out of 10 would have done the same thing. It’s unfair that Walden was able to do that and continue to play the game. That’s when further damage is done and the play gets dirty.

  13. Hey Delanie, shut up. You lost. Try not trash talking “all” the time you are on the field. And as another poste said, don’t get in someone’s face without your helmet on.

  14. Delanie is a beast. The 49ers sorely miss him ,his toughness, and everything he brought to the offense. He was burton Walden all seasoning the 2 games they played the Pack last season too. I hope Delanoe keeps playing as we’ll as he is and The Titans got one helluva player. Signed – a Niner Ryder till I retire.

  15. I don’t disagree that Walden should have been ejected, but wasn’t Walker’s approach similar to bringing a knife to a gun fight? It’s not like Walker wasn’t engaging Walden.

  16. No helmet to helmet comment… Kidding of course. Walden clearly had intent to do damage. On the field you have to know whether a player is vulnerable or not and that’s why he did it. Sick of all these players trying to brush things off like this, this is Sherman level trash talk. Talk trash, back it up. Walker backed it up all night. Walden deserves the book thrown at him, this is similar to throwing your helmet at someone.

  17. Not to mention Walden was the one who ripped the helmet off of Walker’s head prior to head butting him.

  18. Nice touchdownroddywhite. Thinks Colts are imploding?
Your team has 2 wins and you are hobbling around.

Colta have a 3 game lead in their division.

As far as Walden, even as a Colts fan, definitely think he should have been ejected. Hope he is suspended.
Every Colts fan I know agrees.

  19. I doubt this group of officials will be working the Super Bowl. They were having problems all night. At one point while the Colts were driving they delayed the game trying to figure out where the ball needed to be placed after the quarter ended. They missed a challenge flag at one point also. The irony…This game’s referee, Mike Carey, has reportedly ejected the most players among active referees.

  20. I love all of the people saying he shouldn’t gotten in his face without his helmet on. So you’re saying that if a player violently rips your helmet off and throws it you’re not supposed to respond? And the it’s appropriate for Walden to assault an unhelmeted player that he caused to be unhelmeted?

    Sure, that makes perfect sense.

  21. Huge Colts fan here, but Walden absolutely should have been ejected. He was an idiot.

Also mad propers to Walker for using the term “whupped” four times in two sentences.

  22. Walker didn’t walden explain to you he thought you were colin kappernick in the packers niners playoff game from last year, he thought he finally caught you…

  23. After watching this game, it was really apparent that the refs wanted the colts to win. Colts got away with several obvious personal fouls, while titans were tagged for farting to often. The BS on the over ruled 1st down play was way to obvious. Just for the record, I’m not a Titans fan, but it’s sickening when the refs take sides.
When the NFL goes trough the game film, they should fine the refs for missing these critical call. yeah, how about 21K per infraction!!!!!!!

  24. The networks love this kind of “controversy”. This is free publicity for the next time the two teams meet.

  25. This is the same creep who beat up his GF after the TDay game two years ago against the Lions. But of course, violence against a woman is much more aceptable than Suh “stomping” on some hockey goon scrub who was inserted into the game to cheap shot him and rile him up. Granted, Suh shoul’ve never taken the bait, but the absurd amount of outrage that received is a joke. But when you play for favored nation status teams like Indy and GB, no one says a word.

==================================Go get your helmet and put it back on. Pretty easy to do. Not siding with Walden either.

  27. When we watch the actions of many of these so called professionals on the field, are we really surprised about actions we hear about in the locker room.

I think you’re forgetting how the refs blew the challenge attempt that would have given the Colts the ball after the fumble (the flag was out before the ball was snapped). And how he Colts had more penalties and penaltie yards than the Titans. If the refs really wanted Indy to win, they would have called more penalties on the Titans in order to help the Colts win. The Titans lost when they lost a lot of momentum after that fumble in the second half.
