Patriots release LaQuan Williams with Shane Vereen closing in on return

The Patriots made a roster move on Friday morning that may be setting up another move before they face the Panthers on Monday.

New England announced that they have released wide receiver LaQuan Williams, who signed with the team 10 days ago and didn’t play in any games. Such moves late in the week are nothing new for the Patriots or other teams as they shuffle their roster ahead of gameday to make sure they have the preferred mix of players available to them.

Dropping Williams may be the first step in something more than simple housekeeping, though. Running back Shane Vereen is close to making his return from the broken wrist that landed him on injured reserve with the designation to return and Williams’ roster spot could wind up going to Vereen in the first week he’s eligible to play.

Williams played 23 games for the Ravens over the last two seasons, catching four passes in 2011 but serving in a special teams role for the majority of his time in Baltimore.

Loving the fact the oddsmakers made the Patriots a 2.5 point underdog. Nobody knows how to play the lack of respect better than new England. Vereen and Talib back and the second half of the season underway, its time to get ready for playoff positioning.

This is New England football !

Vereen’s return is crucial to the Patriots vs Carolina. The Panther’s pass rush forces a lot of quick dump offs. You need a back who is skilled in the screen /short pass game to counter their pressure.

The Panthers are a dangerous team, having won 5 in a row (3 on the road. They’re the home favorite, even with the Patriots coming off their bye week.

I think Vereen and Talib will be play on a limited basis to get them back up to full speed for next week.

The Pats need to take it easy on both these guys their first game back. They are too important for the playoffs, I’d rather lose this game and have them for the post season than push them back too soon and have them re-injure themselves.

Plus, its going to take a game to readjust to the speed of play after sitting for so long. Neither will likely be fully effective the first game back.

You had to know LaQuan wouldn’t be around long after he actually tweeted Ocho asking for advice on the best way to get up to speed with the Patriots play book. Where has this dude been?
