Nick Foles is slow, but he’s just fine in Chip Kelly’s offense

Nick Foles, Chip Kelly AP

When Chip Kelly arrived as the Eagles’ head coach, there was talk that Nick Foles was a bad fit. Foles, after all, is painfully slow — his 5.14-second 40-yard dash is the slowest at the Scouting Combine in the last four years — and Kelly made his mark as a coach in a system that took advantage of mobile quarterbacks.

But you can’t argue with Foles’s results: Foles has completed 63.2 percent of his passes, for 1,256 yards, with 16 touchdowns and no interceptions, and an absurd passer rating of 132.5. Eagles coach Chip Kelly says Foles is showing that Philadelphia’s offense isn’t about having a fast quarterback, it’s about having a quarterback who makes the right reads and executes accordingly.

“The thing with Nick is, he may not be fleet of foot, but he’s fleet of mind,” Kelly told CSNPhilly.com. “He’s a really, really good decision maker. Part of being a guy that can distribute the football throwing the ball, being a good decision maker is the same exact situations in the run game. You have to be a good decision maker to know when to give it and to know when to pull it. It’s really just taking advantage of what the defense is. If they’re all going to commit and try to take away the running back and no one’s responsible for the quarterback, you’ve got to be able to make them pay, and Nick has done that for us.”

Foles jokes that while Michael Vick can run a 4.3-second 40, Foles himself can only run a 4.3-second 30. But whatever he can run, he has proven that he can run Kelly’s offense.

  2. dudermcrbohan says: Nov 16, 2013 8:58 AM

so people thought he was a bad fit because he runs in a straight line slower than most?

Do most QB’s go streaking down the sidelines?

would Kelly pass on Brady if he had the chance? it takes him 20 minutes to run five yards.

  3. bobbyhoying says: Nov 16, 2013 8:59 AM

It seems that guys who can read defenses are the ones who win Superbowls.

  4. my2cents277 says: Nov 16, 2013 9:00 AM

The Eagles are getting hot at the right time of the year and the remaining games they have should be easy W’s for Chip Kelley and his high powered offense.. Maybe the Lions will be their biggest test, but other than that, it looks as if they should win out the remainder of their games…

  5. jhkayejr says: Nov 16, 2013 9:05 AM

I’m not 100% sold on Foles, but I’m getting there. Kelly always said that his #1 priority in a QB wasn’t speed, it was not making turnovers. Makes sense to me.

  6. rumblefsh9 says: Nov 16, 2013 9:08 AM

I will take good decision making over speed every time!!

  7. ravenswhat says: Nov 16, 2013 9:09 AM

This is a stand in the pocket and go through your progressions league. The scrambling QBs won’t win in this league. Defensive players are too big, too strong, and too fast.

Scrambling around works every time but the last time. Just ask RG3 and Vick how that’s working out.

  8. igotsanduskied says: Nov 16, 2013 9:20 AM

Did you know that Nick Foles is 6’6″ lying down as well?

  9. bloodisred says: Nov 16, 2013 9:22 AM

I’ll be the first to admit Foles has looked pretty darned good in the past couple of games and wouldn’t be in the league if he didn’t have “tools”. I’m a little reserved however in crowning him the best thing since the shirt pocket. The majority, no all of his success has come against defenses playing “off” coverage which basically allows him to go with a pre-determined read (may include a pump or head fake) or the first read. Excuses aside (groin), when Dallas pressed the receivers, he didn’t just struggle, he was lost. I’ll wait.

  10. hansenbrothers says: Nov 16, 2013 9:26 AM

I’m glad everyone is high on Foles right now, it’ll hold the Eagles back in years to come. He beat up on a garbage Oakland D & had some incredibly lucky passes against a shoddy Packers secondary.

  11. f1restarter says: Nov 16, 2013 9:38 AM

I’d take Nick Foles over Robert Griffin III any day. Not being a scrambler, the only way he’ll be beat you is by using his head, studying and understanding defenses, and making accurate throws. That’s the formula for a long-term successful career.

While I’m not 100% sure if he’s the franchise quarterback yet he is making a strong argument. Haters point out that he’s had some lucky throws but I would argue that good QB’s get lucky because they’re doing the other things right.

  16. eatitfanboy says: Nov 16, 2013 10:05 AM

I’ve said all along, and gotten a thousand thumbs down for my efforts, that Chip Kelly’s offense does not require a run first QB but a brains first QB who has enough mobility to make the defense pay a couple of times a game to keep them honest. I said that because, apparently unlike some posters here, I actually watch alot of college football.

Foles had better games against Tampa Bay than Drew Brees, Tom Brady, or Russell Wilson. He’s had exactly one bad game this season.

The only way Nick Foles is not the Eagles QB of the future is if Mariotta is still on the board when the Eagles draft next year.

  17. doctorart2013 says: Nov 16, 2013 10:06 AM

Guess what, if Nick Foles keeps playing this good, he’s the Eagles QB, end of story!

  18. ghettobuk says: Nov 16, 2013 10:12 AM

Foles is showing he can run Kelly’s offense. He needs to continue to get better and we need to see how he reacts when he plays tougher defenses. He’s had a pretty easy run with defenses but he’s making great decisions and he needs this to continue each week. He’s definitely better for this offense than Vick is because Vicks decision making is horrendous!

  19. FinFan68 says: Nov 16, 2013 10:16 AM

I went to a few games in Tucson when he was the QB. He isn’t fast but he seemed to run around quite a bit and get some yardage and/or first downs. He looks to be doing just fine in the system Chip is using in Philly

  22. laserw says: Nov 16, 2013 10:40 AM

Foles’ slow start last year is probably what you want to see in a QB – flashy first year QB’s are never effective long term prospects.

When a QB improves in his second year and builds consistency, you have a long term prospect.

I am technically a Redskin fan (avidly so since 1970 and ending withe last game), I am rooting for the Eagles now that the dog killer is out of the picture and Foles is playing well within himself – he is not a product of lies and hype like Halloween Griffin is in Washington. I can stand behind a guy with lower ratings if he rises above and uses every grain of his talent. There is nothing worse than someone said to have talent who continually uses 5% of it and can’t lead, can’t read, can’t execute, can’t hold the ball, and can’t make his team better by making his teammates better.

Foles may not have more than average talent, but give me his steadiness and leadership any day over Halloween Griffin. And I will venture to say that Foles will win a Super Bowl before Halloween Griffin does.

  23. sbmcintosh36 says: Nov 16, 2013 10:45 AM

The people saying he wasn’t a fit never saw him in college run essentially the same system with no talent around him

  24. janvanflac says: Nov 16, 2013 10:47 AM

He’s not fast in a straight line but he’s actually pretty good at sidestepping pressure AND he keeps his eyes downfield at the same time.

  25. eagleswin says: Nov 16, 2013 10:49 AM

I’ll take a 6’5″ pocket passer with a good arm and the ability to read defenses quickly over a scrambler with a 10 cent brain any day.

  26. rolltide510 says: Nov 16, 2013 10:49 AM

The media seems surprised by this because the media insisted Kelly could only win with dual threat QBs. Kelly’s insistence this wasn’t the case was overruled by the headline writers.

  28. johnnyoclock says: Nov 16, 2013 11:03 AM

I love how there is just a bizarre, immature and unfortunately kinda funny absolute FEAR in our fanbase to admit the guy is good, real good.

Why are some fans like this?

Why do some fans have to have this idiocy where if they like a famous guy it’s therefore to them now a line drawn in the sand, it’s sides that need to be taken, it’s lines drawn on a map and you’re with him or against him, why is it always a fight? Why can’t these people just enjoy the ride? These are the people that can’t handle Foles and it’s seriously strange.

Why do you do this? You can like more than one guy, not everything has to be this devout blind allegiance idiocy to one single player like your life depends on it. In other words, you’re allowed to be objective, if that’s not too big a word.

    People are weird.

  29. jlmd17 says: Nov 16, 2013 11:03 AM

If RGKne had 16 td’s without a pick the country would come grinding to a halt and we would all be forced to worship him as the new savior of mankind. But since it’s just a slow white guy no-one cares. Nice country sheeple.

  30. weathersusa says: Nov 16, 2013 11:04 AM

People seem to overlook the fact that Chip Kelly had Foles scouted and was probably pretty familiar with his career at Arizona, given that he was the coach at Oregon. While it’s too early to call Foles a bona fide starter in the NFL, it is ridiculous to think the Kelly and the Eagles don’t have a good idea of what the kid can do. He will be fine. Kelly doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy that relies too heavily on one qb. The only challenge I see for the Eagles is replacing Matt Barkley after this season.

That is in the top half of the league in important stats.. Playing against Peyton Manning, Phillip Rivers, and Alex Smith.. Look at how those guys stats stack up against the rest of the league. I would say, other than Peyton Manning, and Foles, those stats are pretty strong. I am not saying Foles is the best in the league, but he beat a respectable defense, not a garbage defense. Another thing that makes defenses look bad, is your offense being one of the worst in the league and probably top 2 or 3 in three and outs.. Your opponent gets 3-4 more drives per game than a team would in an average game. Teams with great defenses manage the ball and don’t leave their defense on the field for 38+ minutes per game.

  33. chuckchillout says: Nov 16, 2013 11:17 AM

One of two things seems to happen when Foles drops back to pass…………..

Either a defender will fall down or blow an assignment, which will result in a long completion/TD to a wide open WR.

    or

Foles will hold on to the ball too long, which will result in a sack or an incompletion.

I just don’t know what to make of him yet.

He’s a good kid though, with a great attitude and work ethic. I’m definitely pulling for him.

  34. mancave001 says: Nov 16, 2013 11:22 AM

I don’t care what his 40 yard time is. Watch him play. You’ll see a guy who isn’t that fast, but is *quick.* He’s quick in sidestepping pressure, and quick making decisions. He can run enough to pick up a first down or even a TD when needed. He may not have the same skill set as Michael Vick, but as I said before, he doesn’t need it. Foles is already way ahead in terms of reading a defense and getting rid of the ball. This means he doesn’t have to run like Michael Vick does. Also, the offense just runs better with him in there. That’s because Chip Kelly fooled you all. The offense isn’t built on a mobile quarterback. It’s built on quick decisions and execution.

  35. shatho1 says: Nov 16, 2013 11:28 AM

cowboys will have a healthy defense back on the field by the time they see the eagles again and they will sweep them again like they did last year

  36. newjerseygiants says: Nov 16, 2013 11:32 AM

Foles seems like too nice a guy to play in Philly. They should trade him for Roethlisberger.

  37. danpatrickisatool says: Nov 16, 2013 11:32 AM

I still don’t understand the hype with this guy. Watch the game against the Raiders, his wide receivers were wide open and most of his balls were underthrown. The Raiders D did not show up to play. Last week against the Pack, he continued to under throw receivers and was extremely lucky on a few of his throws. Foles may turn out to be a good QB but I’m not buying into that just yet.

Wow , Eagles fans sure have taken a lot of shots at the Steelers , Packers and Cowboys in recent weeks on threads throughout sports.
Yes they beat Oakland and The Packers
Oakland is bad and GB is a walking mash unit,
    BUT
we will give the Eagles and their fans props…
    YES you won two games
Good for you ,,,good for you guys Wha Hoo you guys are awesome wow wow wow really impressive.
And you deserve to sling mud at those three teams……
    What have they ever did……
You guys won two games in a row more then they can say for this past month….You go Eagle fans you tell them.
Between those three teams what can they brag about and trash talk over……YOU GUYS won two games

I think you get the point…..there are about 15 Super bowl wins between those three teams and the Eagles have how many ?
I guess the Packer have the least amount of Super Bowl wins at 4….and like 14 World titles…but you Eagle fans can brag and talk trash over winning two games in November 2013.
One over a bad Raider team and one over a Beat up team with a Practice squad QB at the wheel
Stay Classy Eagle fans stay classy

Yes, Foles is the next greatest qb in the league. Just like every other qb who has strung together a few good weeks. Like Fitzpatrick, Kolb, Cassell, Freeman, and the list goes on and on. Foles is always going to put up big numbers in an offense that keeps getting on the field because he is going against Aaron Pryor, Scott Tolizien, Mike Glennon, etc.

When Foles ripped up Oakland, Oakland was 10th total defense, 12th against the pass.

The defensive stats you are looking at today are weeks after Foles destroyed those teams, and include the beat-downs the Eagles put on those teams.

apparently I need to dumb it down a little bit for the Redskins fans. I was talking about getting rid of Ponder. Maybe if you paid attention to what happened on the other 31 teams in the league you would know that. Second, you are right, if your D gives up more points than your O can score you lose the game. I’m glad you understand that aspect of the game. My point is, if you couldn’t stop Ponder from putting up more points than you, how are you going to stop a red hot QB who has been playing lights out football…
