Blank expresses support for Dimitroff, Smith

Six days ago, Falcons G.M. Thomas Dimitroff scoffed at the notion that coach Mike Smith could be on the hot seat.  After Sunday’s loss to the Bucs, which plunges the Falcons into a tie for last place in the NFC South, owner Arthur Blank scoffed at the notion that either guy is in trouble.

Via Jay Adams of the team’s official website, Blank said that he has complete confidence in both men.

They’ve earned it over last five years,” Blank said.

And he’s right (unless he was providing the dreaded vote of confidence).  Previously, the Falcons never had consecutive winning seasons in their entire history.  Under Dimitroff and Smith, the Falcons have had five straight winning seasons.

That streak officially will now end, given that the Falcons are 2-8.  Apparently, however, Dimitroff and Smith will get a chance to start a new streak in 2014.

Even though it was nice getting the win against the Dirty Birds today, there is no way Smith’s job should be in jeopardy. They have a ton of injuries to their starters and their play isn’t indicative of the quality of team they are. Matty Ice on the other hand looks like crap.

I’d fire Smith after the season. Not just for this season, but too many 1-and-dones in the playoffs. He’s a good coach but not good enough to take them to the Super Bowl.

It’s going to take more than the 2014 draft & FA to get ATL back to winning. LT, C, RG & RT need overhauls and 2nd year C Peter Konz stunk it up and THREE sacks were allowed to McCoy by the interior by early 2nd quarter. Osi Umenyiora and an aging Babineaux plus some Corey Peters are all the D-line has while rookie LB Paul Worrilow is a tackling machine but the safeties & Asante Samuel had their struggles again so even a healthy squad would not have even gotten to 8-8 this season. Matt Ryan only looks like crap because he’s always on the run like against Seattle. Except for QB it’s rebuilding time as key vets from last year were let go with no adequate replacements, which is the fault of the GM. Hopefully Blank sees that and does away with Dimitroff Dan Reeves style. Mike Smith can re-interview for the next chief.

Good, keep sticking with the same plan. More good GMs and Coaches left for the rest of us that are eager to win.

Remember in the preseason when Falcon’s fans thought they had a chance to get to the Super Bowl? Well it looks like the sheen on Matt Ryan’s forehead has worn off.

Super Bowl!?? The only thing in Atlanta that should have Super Bowl associated with it is the efforts to get the new stadium built.

Blank’s biggest concern is his inability to act smug for the cameras this season when making his grand descent to the sidelines.

Blank should fire everybody if at one time over the next three years they go after anything but lineman. The Falcons have completely ignored the line for years and I’m surprised they have won two…it’s a miracle that they won that many.

This would be rock bottom. Losing to the Bucs.

This team stinks worse than the circus tent they play home games in.

I think they’ve done enough previously to keep their jobs, but the players seem to be quitting out there on this coaching staff. I know they have had a ton of injuries to their offensive weapons, but they just seem listless week in, week out and are getting worse as the weeks go on.
